Beached bachelors: An extensive study on the largest recorded sperm whale Physeter macrocephalus mortality event in the North Sea.

Between the 8th January and the 25th February 2016, the largest sperm whale Physeter macrocephalus mortality event ever recorded in the North Sea occurred with 30 sperm whales stranding in five countries within six weeks. All sperm whales were immature males. Groups were stratified by size, with the smaller animals stranding in the Netherlands, and the largest in England. The majority (n = 27) of the stranded animals were necropsied and/or sampled, allowing for an international and comprehensive investigation into this mortality event. The animals were in fair to good nutritional condition and…

Clinicians' views on working with anorexia nervosa and autism spectrum disorder comorbidity: a qualitative study.

BACKGROUND: Anorexia nervosa (AN) and autism spectrum disorder (ASD) form a relatively common comorbidity, with poorer illness outcomes and poorer responses to treatments for AN compared to individuals without ASD. However, the treatment of this comorbidity remains poorly understood: no research to date has examined how clinicians currently approach treating AN/ASD. This study aimed to explore the experiences of clinicians working with comorbid AN/ASD using qualitative methods in order to identify areas for future improvement. METHODS: Interviews with individual clinicians (n = 9) were carrie

Sleep Problems in Childhood and Borderline Personality Disorder Symptoms in Early Adolescence.

Sleep disorders, such as insomnia and nightmares, are commonly associated with Borderline Personality Disorder (BPD) in adulthood. Whether nightmares and sleep-onset and maintenance problems predate BPD symptoms earlier in development is unknown. We addressed this gap in the literature using data from the Avon Longitudinal Study of Parents and Children (ALSPAC). Participants included 6050 adolescents (51.4 % female) who completed the UK Childhood Interview for DSM-IV BPD at 11 to 12 years of age. Nightmares and sleep onset and maintenance problems were prospectively assessed via mother report

Association between smoking and health outcomes in an economically deprived population: the Liverpool Lung Project.

BACKGROUND: The association between smoking and several health outcomes among those from the most deprived communities in the UK has not previously been detailed. The aim of this study is to examine the impact of smoking on health outcomes specifically among a particularly deprived population in a developed country (Liverpool; one of the most deprived local authorities in England). METHODS: The Liverpool Lung Project recruited a prospective cohort of 8753 participants from across Liverpool, aged 45-79 years between 1998 and 2008. Participants were followed annually through the Hospital Episod…

Delayed diagnosis in primary care-The main cause of sarcoma litigation in the United Kingdom.

BACKGROUND: Poor awareness and knowledge of lumps and bumps can impact on patient outcomes and survival. Late referrals or false reassurance may lead to litigation proceedings. The aim of this study was to identify the litigation cost in sarcoma care and identify areas for improvement. METHOD: Orthopaedic litigation between 1995-2010 in England and Wales was obtained from the National Health Service Litigation Authority. Litigation specifically relating to sarcoma in the extremities was identified. Causation, compensation fee, cost of legal defense, and compensation were analyzed. RESULTS: T…

The impact of temperature and precipitation on blacklegged tick activity and Lyme disease incidence in endemic and emerging regions.

BACKGROUND: The incidence of Lyme disease shows high degrees of inter-annual variation in the northeastern United States, but the factors driving this variation are not well understood. Complicating matters, it is also possible that these driving factors may vary in regions with differing histories of Lyme disease endemism. We evaluated the effect of the number of hot (T > 25 °C), dry (precipitation = 0) days during the questing periods of the two immature Ixodes scapularis life stages (larval and nymphal) on inter-annual variation in Lyme disease incidence between 2000 and 2011 in long-term e

Sediment-porewater partitioning, total sulfur, and methylmercury production in estuaries.

Mercury (Hg) speciation and the activity of Hg(II)-methylating bacteria are responsible for the rate of methylmercury production and thus bioaccumulation in marine foodwebs. Factors affecting porewater partitioning (Kd) and methylation of Hg(II) were examined at 11 sites in sediment of 4 biogeochemically diverse estuaries in the Northeast U.S. In Long Island Sound, 88% of total mercury (HgT) log Kd variability was described by porewater dissolved organic carbon concentration and sediment total sulfur (S) content. Whereas across all estuaries, regression analyses showed that S alone drives abou

Evaluation of a temperate climate mosquito, Ochlerotatus detritus (=Aedes detritus), as a potential vector of Japanese encephalitis virus.

The U.K. has not yet experienced a confirmed outbreak of mosquito-borne virus transmission to people or livestock despite numerous autochthonous epizootic and human outbreaks of mosquito-borne diseases on the European mainland. Indeed, whether or not British mosquitoes are competent to transmit arboviruses has not been established. Therefore, the competence of a local (temperate) British mosquito species, Ochlerotatus detritus (=Aedes detritus) (Diptera: Culicidae) for transmission of a member of the genus Flavivirus, Japanese encephalitis virus (JEV) as a model for mosquito-borne virus transm

Comparison of an intra-oral photographic caries assessment with an established visual caries assessment method for use in dental epidemiological studies of children.

OBJECTIVES: A cross-sectional study was conducted to compare a visual dental examination method developed by the British Association for the Study of Community Dentistry with assessment of intra-oral photographs as means of detecting dental caries in 5-year-olds and 10- to 11-year-olds. METHOD: 130 5-year-olds and 140 10- to 11-year-olds were visually examined by five trained and calibrated examiners. The children also had intra-oral photographs of their teeth taken. The same five examiners assessed the photographs for caries. Both photographic and visual assessments were undertaken at 'carie

Register based study of bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex: prevalence, associated anomalies, prenatal diagnosis and survival.

PURPOSE: We describe the prevalence, associated anomalies, prenatal diagnosis and survival of patients with bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Data were extracted from the Northern Congenital Abnormality Survey for patients delivered during 1985 to 2008. This survey collects data on congenital anomalies in fetuses, stillbirths and live-born infants of mothers residing in Northern England (Northumberland, North Cumbria, Tyne and Wear Durham, Darlington and Teesside). RESULTS: A total of 43 cases were identified from 824,368 registered births for a total prevalence of…

Incidents in an adolescent forensic secure inpatient service.

There has been increased research in recent years on incidents within adolescent inpatient psychiatric units, although findings to date have been somewhat inconsistent. We analysed all reported incidents by 37 consecutively discharged patients from a mixed sex adolescent forensic hospital. Findings include a very high overall rate of incidents. A small number of female patients with emerging emotionally unstable personality disorder accounted for the majority of violent incidents and other incidents. Almost all the patients assaulted someone during their admission. Patients on civil sections o
