Atherosclerosis is a chronic inflammatory disease forming plaques in medium and large-sized arteries. ADAMTS-4 (a disintegrin and metalloproteinase with thrombospondin motifs-4) is an extracellular-matrix remodelling enzyme involved in the degradation of versican in the arterial wall. Recent reports indicated that increased expression of ADAMTS-4 is associated with plaque progression and vulnerability. Bioactive components of dietary oil, like sesame oil, are reported to have anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties. Here, we studied the effect of sesame oil on regulating ADAMTS-4 in high-

A characteristic feature of the anatomy of the human face is its arrangement in layers. The main layers include, from outside to inside: (i) the skin; (ii) the subcutaneous fat; (iii) the superficial musculoaponeurotic system; (iv) the deep fat, and (iv) the periosteum overlying the bony structures of the skull. Herein, the facial bones provide the basis for the ligaments and other facial structures that are attached to them. In contrast, the muscles control the mimics and movements, hence the dynamic anatomy of the face. The skin represents the outermost structure of the body and protects the

Bariatric surgery has been recognized as the safest and most effective procedure for controlling type 2 diabetes (T2D) and obesity in carefully selected patients. The aim of the present study was to compare the effects of Sleeve Gastrectomy (SG) and Single Anastomosis Duodenoileal Bypass with SG (SADI-S) on the metabolic profile of diet-induced obese rats. A total of 35 four-week-old male Wistar rats were submitted to surgical interventions (sham operation, SG and SADI-S) after 4 months of being fed a high-fat diet. Body weight, metabolic profile and the expression of molecules involved in the

SLC2A8, also known as GLUT8, is a facilitative glucose transporter expressed in the testis, brain, liver, heart, uterus, ovary, and fat. In this study we examined the effect of Slc2a8 deficiency on mouse gamete, preimplantation embryo, and implantation phenotype, as well as postnatal growth and physiology. For this model, the transcriptional start site and exons 1-4 were targeted and a lack of protein expression was confirmed by Western immunoblot. Oocytes obtained from Slc2a8(-/-) mice demonstrated abnormal metabolism and ATP production. In addition, deletion of Slc2a8 resulted in impaired de

Ovariectomy (Ovx) of mice significantly increases the epidermal growth factor (EGF) concentration in the submandibular gland. To elucidate the role of this elevated EGF in obesity of Ovx mice, we examined the effects of sialoadenectomy (Sx) and anti-EGF rabbit antiserum administration on the body weight (BW) gain and carcass fat deposition in Ovx animals. Studies were performed in four groups of mice consisting of control, Ovx, Ovx+Sx, and Ovx+anti-EGF groups. Ovx increased the BW gain compared with the control animals, whereas Sx and anti-EGF significantly reduced it. Although the relative we

Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a subtype of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) that has been associated with overconsumption of calories and lipids, compared to the healthy population, and summer temperatures have been reported to be closely related to the prevalence of UC. To evaluate the effects of dietary and lifestyle factors on UC, a combination of 2.0% dextran sulfate sodium (DSS), a high-fat/high-sugar diet, and exposure to high temperature and humidity was used to construct mouse models of UC. Changes in body weight, disease activity index (DAI) scores, histopathological analysis, serum lipi

Purpose: The relationship between regional fat and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) remains poorly understood. This study seeks to explore the link between regional fat and OSA, utilizing data from the National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey (NHANES). Methods: This cross-sectional analysis used NHANES 2015-2018 data. OSA symptoms were assessed through sleep questionnaires. Regional fat mass (FM) was measured using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry, including trunk, arm, leg, android, gynoid, and abdominal FM. The fat mass index (FMI) was calculated by dividing FM by the square of height.

Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) can progress to fibrosis and hepatocellular carcinoma, with TGF-β playing a key role. UBAP2L regulates TGF-β expression, but its role in NAFLD remains unclear. While exercise improves NAFLD and cold exposure enhances lipid metabolism, their combined effects on NAFLD-induced fibrosis are unknown. This study examines whether exercise with cold exposure attenuates NAFLD-induced fibrosis via the UBAP2L-mediated TGF-β/SMAD2/3 pathway. Fifty 5-week-old male C57BL/6N mice were assigned to five groups: normal control (C), high-fat diet (H), high-fat diet with

Gut-training has been shown to improve gastrointestinal tolerance, circulatory glucose availability, and exercise performance. The study aimed to investigate the effects of a repetitive feeding-challenge using fat versus carbohydrate (CHO) on markers of gastrointestinal function, glucose availability, and subsequent performance when challenged with a high-CHO load (87 g/hr) during exercise. Forty-four endurance athletes (mean ± SD [9 females and 35 males]: body mass: 71.2 ± 9.2 kg, height: 173.6 ± 7.0 cm, V˙O2max: 55.0 ± 6.1 ml·kg-1·min-1) completed a preintervention gut-challenge trial (T1),

BACKGROUND: Neurogenic thoracic outlet syndrome (NTOS), characterized by brachial plexus compression, causes chronic pain and numbness in the upper extremities. Recurrences are common after surgical treatment, which typically includes an anterior scalenectomy and rib resection. Brachial plexus neurolysis and flap coverage can reduce scar fibrosis and prevent further recurrence. The latissimus dorsi flap is a common choice for this purpose. However, perforator fat flaps minimize donor site complications by avoiding muscle harvesting. Furthermore, a free flap transfer prevents new scars from dev

BACKGROUND & AIMS: Non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common metabolic disorder, characterized by the accumulation of excess fat in the liver, and is a driving factor for various severe liver diseases. These multi-factorial and multi-timescale changes are observed in different clinical studies, but these studies have not been integrated into a unified framework. In this study, we aim to present such a unified framework in the form of a dynamic mathematical model.
METHODS: For model training and validation, we collected data for dietary or drug-induced interventions aimed at reduci

BACKGROUND: Eggs are rich in bioactive compounds, including choline and carotenoids that may benefit cardiometabolic outcomes. However, little is known about their relationship with nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD).
OBJECTIVES: We investigated the association between intakes of eggs and selected egg-rich nutrients (choline, lutein, and zeaxanthin) and NAFLD risk and changes in liver fat over ∼6 y of follow-up in the Framingham Offspring and Third Generation cohorts.
METHODS: On 2 separate occasions (2002-2005 and 2008-2011), liver fat was assessed using a computed tomography scan to

BACKGROUND: South Asians are at higher risk for type 2 diabetes (T2D) than many other race/ethnic groups. Ectopic adiposity, specifically hepatic steatosis and visceral fat may partially explain this. Our objective was to derive metabolite risk scores for ectopic adiposity and assess associations with incident T2D in South Asians.
METHODS: We examined 550 participants in the Mediators of Atherosclerosis in South Asians Living in America (MASALA) cohort study aged 40-84 years without known cardiovascular disease or T2D and with metabolomic data. Computed tomography scans at baseline assessed h

AIMS: Glycogenic hepatopathy is associated with significant psychosocial consequences and health costs. Metabolic Dysfunction-Associated Steatotic Liver Disease and glycogenic hepatopathy are frequently confused as "fatty liver" when seen on ultrasonography. We wished to examine liver fat and glycogen content in groups defined based on metabolic and liver disease phenotypes.
METHODS: This case-control study undertaken in a tertiary hospital used nuclear proton magnetic resonance spectroscopy (1H-MRS) to examine liver fat and glycogen content in five clinical groups, each containing five parti

BACKGROUND: The pathophysiology of pelvic organ prolapse is largely unknown. We hypothesized that reduced muscle mass on magnetic resonance defecography (MRD) is associated with increased pelvic floor laxity. The aim of this study was to compare the psoas and puborectalis muscle mass composition and cross-sectional area among patients with or without pelvic laxity.
METHODS: An observational retrospective study was conducted on women > age 18 years old who had undergone MRD for pelvic floor complaints from January 2020 to December 2020 at Stanford Pelvic Health Center. Pelvic floor laxity, pel

BACKGROUND: Controlled attenuation parameter (CAP) is an ultrasound-based point-of-care method to quantify liver fat; however, the optimal threshold for CAP to detect pathologic liver fat among persons living with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV; PLWH) is unknown. Therefore, we aimed to identify the diagnostic accuracy and optimal threshold of CAP for the detection of liver-fat among PLWH with magnetic resonance imaging proton-density fat fraction (MRI-PDFF) as the reference standard.
METHODS: Patients from a prospective single-center cohort of PLWH at risk for HIV-associated nonalcoholic f
