Integrating humans into biodiversity science through ethnobiodiversity informatics.

Biodiversity science is increasingly data-rich and computationally sophisticated, yet humans are still often treated as absent, implicit or overly simplified drivers of ecological and evolutionary change. This limits how well models represent the real-world processes that generate biodiversity and practical impact at a time when human activities are rapidly reshaping biodiversity worldwide. Here, we describe ethnobiodiversity informatics as a necessary expansion of biodiversity informatics - the mobilization, integration and analysis of digital biodiversity data - that represents the human sys

From Synthesis Optimization to Chelation Mechanism: A Rice Protein Peptide-Calcium Complex Enhances Intestinal Calcium Absorption and Bone Formation via the TRPV6-Calbindin9k Axis.

Rice protein peptides, abundant byproducts of rice processing, represent a sustainable source for developing novel nutritional delivery systems. To address the low bioavailability of traditional calcium supplements, this study aimed to fabricate a high-performance calcium-chelating complex (RPP-Ca) and elucidate its functional mechanism. The synthesis process was systematically optimized, yielding a maximum calcium-binding capacity of 93.98 ± 1.99 mg/g under optimal conditions (pH 10, 70 °C, 50 min reaction time, peptide-to-calcium mass ratio of 2:1). Physicochemical characterization utilizing

PI3-kinase has multiple functions in asexual blood stages of Plasmodium falciparum.

All symptoms of malaria are caused during the replication of the parasite Plasmodium falciparum in human red blood cells. The parasite digests the host cell cytoplasm in its food vacuole, a pathway of particular interest as drug target. The Vps34-type PI3-kinase in P. falciparum produces PI3-monophophate (PI3P) and has been linked to haemoglobin digestion, to resistance to the current first line antimalarial artemisinin and to biology of the apicoplast. Here we dissect the functions of PfPI3-kinase by inducible deletion of its gene using the loxP-DiCre system and find that PfPI3-kinase is esse

Edible polyethylene glycol modified chitosan nanoparticles: Separation and controlled release of tea polyphenols from multiphasic systems.

Tea polyphenols have potent antioxidant and lipid-regulating properties but suffer from low bioavailability and instability. Here, we present a novel PEG (polyethylene glycol)-modified chitosan nanoparticle system to adsorb and separate tea polyphenols from tea extract. It incorporates a hydrophilic PEG layer to enhance stability and adsorption efficiency compared to traditional chitosan nanoparticles. Under optimized conditions (pH = 5.0, 120 min, 35 °C), PEG-CS NPs with 0.3 % PEG achieved an adsorption capacity of 81.01 mg/g. Kinetic analysis revealed that the adsorption process conforms to

Thermodynamic insights into the interplay between calcium and iron(ii) hydroxycarboxylates: impacts on solubility, speciation, and bioavailability.

This study investigated the aqueous solubility, speciation, and thermodynamic properties of calcium and iron(ii) hydroxycarboxylates to elucidate their complex interactions and optimize mineral supplement formulations. The results showed that the solubility of these compounds increased with temperature, with calcium lactate exhibiting higher solubility than calcium gluconate, while iron(ii) gluconate had higher solubility than iron(ii) lactate. The thermodynamic analysis revealed that the dissolution processes were endothermic and entropy-driven. Additionally, the presence of iron(ii) ions was

Dynamic Overrepresentation of Accumbal Cues in Food- and Opioid-Seeking Rats after Prenatal THC Exposure.

The increasing prevalence of cannabis use during pregnancy has raised significant medical concerns, primarily related to the presence of Δ9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC), which readily crosses the placenta and impacts fetal brain development. Previous research has identified midbrain dopaminergic neuronal alterations related to maternal THC consumption. However, the enduring consequences that prenatal cannabis exposure (PCE) has on striatum-based processing during voluntary reward pursuit have not been specifically determined. Here, we characterize PCE rats during food (palatable pellets) or opio

Transcriptomic and metabolomic approaches elucidate the systemic response of wheat plants under waterlogging.

Extreme weather conditions lead to significant imbalances in crop productivity, which in turn affect food security. Flooding events cause serious problems for many crop species such as wheat. Although metabolic readjustments under flooding are important for plant regeneration, underlying processes remain poorly understood. Here, we investigated the systemic response of wheat to waterlogging using metabolomics and transcriptomics. A 12 d exposure to excess water triggered nutritional imbalances and disruption of metabolite synthesis and translocation, reflected by reductions in plant biomass an

Exploring correlations between soy sauce components and the formation of thermal contaminants during low-salt solid-state fermentation.

Soy sauce is a traditional seasoning in Asia and provides a unique flavor to food. However, some harmful Maillard reaction products (MRPs) were inevitably formed during the manufacturing process. Fermentation is a critical step of soy sauce manufacturing and has a significant impact on MRPs formation. Therefore, this study investigated the formation of some characteristic MRPs (e.g., furan, carboxymethyl lysine (CML), 5-hydroxymethylfurfural (5-HMF), α-dicarbonyl compounds) and their correlation with major quality indicators (e.g., free amino acids, reducing sugar, total acid, ammonia nitrogen

Enhancing the Nutritional and Bioactive Properties of Bee Pollen: A Comprehensive Review of Processing Techniques.

Bee pollen is recognized as a superfood due to its high content of nutrients and bioactive compounds. However, its bioavailability is restricted by a degradation-resistant outer layer known as exine. Physical and biotechnological techniques have recently been developed to degrade this layer and improve pollen's nutritional and functional profile. This review examines how processing methods such as fermentation, enzymatic hydrolysis, ultrasound, and drying affect pollen's chemical profile, nutrient content, and bioactive compounds. The review also considers changes in exine structure and possib

Optimized psilocybin production in tryptophan catabolism-repressed fungi.

The high therapeutic potential of psilocybin, a prodrug of the psychotropic psilocin, holds great promise for the treatment of mental disorders such as therapy-refractory depression, alcohol use disorder and anorexia nervosa. Psilocybin has been designated a 'Breakthrough Therapy' by the US Food and Drug Administration, and therefore a sustainable production process must be established to meet future market demands. Here, we present the development of an in vivo psilocybin production chassis based on repression of l-tryptophan catabolism. We demonstrate the proof of principle in Saccharomyces

Brain activation in individuals suffering from bulimia nervosa and control subjects during sweet and sour taste stimuli.

INTRODUCTION: Episodes of eating great quantities of extremely sweet and often aversive tasting food are a hallmark of bulimia nervosa. This unique eating pattern led researchers to seek and find differences in taste perception between patients and healthy control subjects. However, it is currently not known if these originate from central or peripheral impairment in the taste perception system. In this cross sectional study, we compare brain response to sweet and sour stimuli in 5 bulimic and 8 healthy women using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI). MATERIALS AND METHODS: Sweet, so

Changes in the Quality of High-Oleic Sunflower Oil during the Frying of Shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei).

Shrimp fried in vegetable oil is a very popular food, so it is important to study the changes in the quality of the oil during frying. In order to more precisely study the nature of frying oil during the cooking process, this study investigated the quality changes of high-oleic sunflower oil during the frying of South American white shrimp (Litopenaeus vannamei). The oxidation and hydrolysis products of frying oils were investigated by integrating the proton nuclear magnetic resonance technique with traditional oil evaluation indexes in an integrated manner. The results showed that the color d

Recent advances and mechanistic interactions of hydrogen sulfide with plant growth regulators in relation to abiotic stress tolerance in plants.

Adverse environmental constraints such as drought, heat, cold, salinity, and heavy metal toxicity are the primary concerns of the agricultural industry across the globe, as these stresses negatively affect yield and quality of crop production and therefore can be a major threat to world food security. Recently, it has been demonstrated that hydrogen sulfide (H2S), which is well-known as a gasotransmitter in animals, also plays a potent role in various growth and developmental processes in plants. H2S, as a potent signaling molecule, is involved in several plant processes such as in the regulat

'Physically it was fine, I'd eat what normal people do. But it's never like this in my head': A qualitative diary study of daily experiences of life in recovery from an eating disorder.

OBJECTIVE: High eating disorder (ED) relapse rates stress the need for clearer understanding around how recovery is experienced and maintained. Recent research endorses the concept of recovery as a process rather than an endpoint. This study aimed to investigate daily experiences of living in recovery from an ED. METHOD: Fourteen participants who self-identified as recovered from a formally diagnosed ED were recruited online. A qualitative diary app was used for data collection. Participants completed written or audio open-ended diary entries every other day for 2 weeks describing their exper

Influence of Oxidative Stress and Inflammation on Nutritional Status and Neural Plasticity: New Perspectives on Post-Stroke Neurorehabilitative Outcome.

Beyond brain deficits caused by strokes, the effectiveness of neurorehabilitation is strongly influenced by the baseline clinical features of stroke patients, including a patient's current nutritional status. Malnutrition, either as a pre-stroke existing condition or occurring because of ischemic injury, predisposes patients to poor rehabilitation outcomes. On the other hand, a proper nutritional status compliant with the specific needs required by the process of brain recovery plays a key role in post-stroke rehabilitative outcome favoring neuroplasticity mechanisms. Oxidative stress and infl
