OBJECTIVES: To recognize most common patterns of upper extremity (UE) injuries in victims of Intimate Partner Violence (IPV).
METHODS: Radiological review of 308 patients who reported physical IPV at our institution from January 2013 to June 2018, identified 55 patients with 88 unique UE injuries. Demographic data and injury patterns and associations were collected from the electronic medical records.
RESULTS: The cohort included 49 females and 6 males (age 19-63, mean 38). At the time of injury, IPV was reported in 15/88 (17%) and IPV screening was documented for 22/88 (25%) injuries. There

The present paper reviews the results obtained with different modalities of treatment employed in isolated fractures of the zygomatic complex. Seventy-three patients were re-examined with respect to infraorbital nerve function. The results obtained suggest that the incidence of hypoaesthesia of the infraorbital nerve following fracture of the zygomatic complex can be reduced if rigid fixation is applied on the infraorbital rim. The zygomatic bone is a protruding part of the human skeleton and is therefore easily affected by trauma to the facial region. The etiology and clinical appearance of f

BACKGROUND: Talar neck fractures occur infrequently and have been associated with high complication rates. The purposes of the present study were to evaluate the rates of early and late complications after operative treatment of talar neck fractures, to ascertain the effect of surgical delay on the development of osteonecrosis, and to determine the functional outcomes after operative treatment of such fractures.
METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of 100 patients with 102 fractures of the talar neck who had been managed at a level-1 trauma center. All fractures had been treated w

BACKGROUND: Recent studies have shown a high prevalence of symptomatic malunion and nonunion after nonoperative treatment of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures. We sought to compare patient-oriented outcome and complication rates following nonoperative treatment and those after plate fixation of displaced midshaft clavicular fractures.
METHODS: In a multicenter, prospective clinical trial, 132 patients with a displaced midshaft fracture of the clavicle were randomized (by sealed envelope) to either operative treatment with plate fixation (sixty-seven patients) or nonoperative treatment w

PURPOSE OF THE STUDY: Calcaneal fractures are frequent injuries which may interfere with the patient's daily activities for a long time. They usually occur as the result of an axial load causing impaction of the talus into the calcaneus. They can also be bilateral. Falls and jumps from height are the most frequent causes.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Between August 2005 and December 2011, the method of open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with a calcaneal locking compression plate (LCP) was used to treat 98 patients with 114 calcaneal fractures. Of these, 16 were bilateral fractures found in

Cervical spine (C-spine) fractures in young children are very rare, and little information on treatment modalities and functional, radiographic, and patient-reported outcome exists. In this 2-center, retrospective case series, we assessed subjective and functional mid-term outcomes in children aged ≤5 years whose C-spine fractures were treated nonoperatively.Between 2000 and 2018, 6 children (median age at injury: 23.5 months; range: 16-31 months) with C1 or C2 injuries were treated with Minerva cast/brace or soft collar brace at 1 of the 2 study centers. Two patients suffered C1 fractures, an

Hamate fractures are commonly divided into hook fractures and body fractures. The coronal fractures as a special form of hamate's body fracture are very rare injuries. Because of unspecific clinical findings and the mostly inconclusive x-ray imaging, these fractures are frequently overseen or misdiagnosed. This leads to further complications like secondary arthritis, persisting pain, and functional deficits in patient's wrist mobility. In our study, a collocation of coronal hamate fractures is analyzed and evaluated with respect to functional outcome after operative treatment and compared to t

The present study evaluates the clinical and radiological results of patients with anterior glenoid rim fractures treated with two different open surgical techniques depending on the size of the bony fragment. In patients with displaced glenoid rim fractures involving less than 25% of the glenoid surface (Type I, II and IIIA fractures) suture anchor repair was performed. Patients with a bony defect involving more than 25% of the glenoid surface (Type IIIB fractures) underwent open reduction and internal fixation using cannulated screws. After a mean follow-up of 22 months, 15 patients (mean ag

Osteoporosis international : a journal established as result of cooperation between the European Foundation for Osteoporosis and the National Osteoporosis Foundation of the USA2004eng
Fractures of the proximal end of the femur, together with vertebral fractures, are greatly exacerbated by osteoporosis and can be regarded as the most typical and most serious complications of this disease. The demand for prompt mobilisation with full loading of the affected limb, combined with a desire for the gentlest of treatments, becomes increasingly difficult to meet in ageing patients with advanced osteoporosis. The advantages of osteosynthesis in respect to these demands when operating on elderly patients with fractures do not apply due to the inability of the osteoporotic bone to hold

Scapular fractures in children are rare injuries. The indications for the surgical treatment of glenoid fossa fractures in children are not well defined. We report on an eight-year-old child with a displaced glenoid fossa fracture requiring open reduction and internal fixation. A review of the literature and indications for the operative management of glenoid fossa fractures in children are discussed.

Many studies indicate that spinal canal decompression and stabilization lead to improved neurologic recovery in patients with incomplete neurologic deficits. It is recognized that surgical stabilization of unstable thoracolumbar injuries with complete neurologic deficit or without deficit reduces hospital stay, improves spinal alignment, shortens rehabilitation, and results in fewer medical complications. Unfortunately, many aspects of management remain controversial. For many injuries, more than one treatment method has been shown to be efficacious, although certain injuries have improved out

Four patients with chronic lunate and perilunate dislocations were treated by open reduction and internal fixation. The interval between injury and operation was 7, 8, 14 and 18 weeks, respectively. Both palmar and dorsal surgical approaches were needed to reduce the old dislocation in all cases. A case of dorsal trans-scaphoid perilunate dislocation showed concurrent partial disruption of the scapholunate ligament. Transient vascular compromise of either the lunate or the proximal scaphoid fragment was noted in three patients. Despite the delay in treatment, all patients had satisfactory outc

Experience with complete dislocation of the knee in 22 consecutive patients during a six year period was analyzed. Major vascular complications occurred in nine of 13 extremities with anterior dislocation, one of seven extremities with posterior dislocation and none of two extremities with lateral dislocation. Liberal use of trans-femoral ateriography for diagnosis disclosed significant arterial injuries in four of 15 limbs, despite postreduction pedal pulses which were apparently normal. Limb salvage was accomplished in 20 of 21 survivors and in eight of nine with associated vascular complica

Typical nerve damage after fractures due to the topographical proximity of the nerves to the bones, are shown and therapeutic principles are discussed. Primary traumatic lesions are differentiated from so-called "creeping paralysis". The methods of choice are neurolyses, nerve suture or transplantation, each at the appropriate time. Evaluation of 83 of the 128 Patients undergoing microsurgical operations on the nerves in recent years is presented after re-exmination by independent neurologists. One-third showed definite signs of regeneration, more than one-third had good functional results, an

UNLABELLED: The aim of this study was to perform a systematic review in order to identify predictors of secondary displacement in distal radius fractures. We performed a systematic review and identified all studies that reported secondary displacement following distal radius fractures. Where possible, we pooled the odds ratios of predictors. The initial search yielded 3178 studies of which 27 were included. Multiple studies found that age, shortening, volar comminution, loss of radial inclination, the presence of a volar hook, AO type 3 fractures (A3, B3, C3) and the Older classification were

Forearm injuries are common and can vary in complexity. The fractures are easily diagnosed, but the associated soft tissue injuries may not be as obvious. Treatment results are dependent not only on the fracture healing but on the return of normal relationships about the distal radioulnar joint, the interosseous membrane, and the proximal radioulnar joint. Alteration in any of these elements can result in permanent loss of forearm rotation and stability. Recent anatomic and biomechanical studies have increased our knowledge of these structures and their role in forearm function. The findings f

Twenty patients with severely comminuted fractures about the ankle, either severely comminuted pilon fractures or open pilon fractures (three Grade II, seven Grade III), were managed with the use of a Delta-framed external fixator across the ankle joint. All fractures had open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) with either screw fixation or small plates to stabilize the articular surface with minimal soft-tissue dissection. Average external fixator time was 2.5 months, and the time to union averaged 4.5 months. All fractures healed. Three delayed unions required bone grafting and two had p

Restraint of a mature Moufflon sheep resulted in severe fracture and luxation of a previously osteoarthritic tibiotarsal joint. Arthrodesis was accomplished by means of internal pin fixation and an external fiberglass cast. After 3 months of hospitalization, the ram was returned to the original flock. Competition for dominance within the flock resulted in physical trauma to the ram. Seven months after surgery, the ram sustained a fractured ulna and died from exposure.

UNLABELLED: Lisfranc injuries to the tarsometatarsal complex of the midfoot have become increasingly recognized in the athletic population. Regardless of mechanism, any injury that results in instability in the midfoot requires operative stabilization to preserve function and enable return to sport. In this manuscript, the anatomy, etiology, prevalence, current treatment modalities, and clinical outcomes of patients who suffer Lisfranc injuries are reviewed, with a special focus on the unique characteristics surrounding such an injury in an athlete.
LEVEL OF EVIDENCE: Level V, expert opinion.
