The incidence of osteoporotic fractures increases along aging and the importance of their prevention is more emphasized in the elderly. Although the major determinants for fragile fractures in the elderly are not only the lower bone strength but also frailty and fall, treatments with anti-resorbers are effective also in the elderly. On the other hands, nutritional agents such as active vitamin D3 and vitamin K2 are effective in reducing the fracture incidences in spite of their modest effects on bone mineral density. Recently, the effects of vitamin Ds on the reduction of fall events are notic

Medical Prevention and Therapy Fractures in the elderly, in particular of the proximal femur, may give rise to functional impairment with loss of independence and mobility. Apart from falls, the most common cause of fractures is osteoporosis or other impairments of mechanical stability of bone. In addition to the avoidance of falls and their sequelae, and the minimization of risk factors where possible, optimization of the mechanical stability of the bone is an important point of attack for interventional strategies. Current data on medical possibilities of osteoporosis prevention and treatmen

Osteoporosis (OP) and its related fragility fractures represent a significant global health burden, primarily characterized by reduced bone mass, deteriorated microarchitecture, and compromised self-repair capacity. While current mainstream therapies focusing on anti-resorption and anabolic pathways can slow bone loss, they often fall short in reversing established skeletal deficits and, particularly, in facilitating fracture healing. Growing evidence underscores that angiogenesis is fundamentally coupled with osteogenesis, forming the cornerstone of bone homeostasis and injury repair. However

Metacarpal neck fracture is one of the most common types of hand fractures; the literature suggests that applying a bone plate on the dorsal side provides higher fixation strength than that provided by other fixation methods. However, bone plate fixation on the dorsal side may result in postoperative tendon adhesion. So far, no studies have investigated the fixation of metacarpal neck fractures on the volar side by using a bone plate. The objective of this study was to investigate the differences in the fixation results between bone plate fixation on the dorsal side and bone plate fixation on

Osteoporosis is a major cause of disability and excess mortality in older men and women. Hip fracture incidence accelerates approximately 10 years after menopause in women and after age 70 in men. Approximately 1 million Americans suffer fragility fractures each year at a cost of over 14 billion dollars. The disability, mortality, and cost of hip and vertebral fractures are substantial in the rapidly growing, aging population so that prevention of osteoporosis is a major public health concern. BMD is used to make the diagnosis of osteoporosis before incident fracture and predict fracture risk.

Throughout the world, millions of people suffer from fragilizing osteopathies such as osteomalacia and osteoporosis. Osteomalacia is a rare disorder, corresponding to mineralization abnormalities in adult bone, as opposed to rickets in children. Renal phosphate loss and hypophosphatasia are the main causes of vitamin-resistant osteomalacia. Diagnosis is based on clinical history, phosphocalcic metabolism assessment and, if necessary, molecular characterization, and must be rapid in order to initiate the most appropriate treatment and consider new treatments such as burosumab if necessary. Traditionally, osteoporosis and cardiovascular disease (CVD) are considered as separate chronic diseases. Increasing evidence now links osteoporosis with hypertension, abnormal lipid metabolism, atherosclerosis, vascular calcification (VC), and congestive heart failure. VC coexists with bone loss, and aortic calcification is a strong predictor of low bone mineral density (BMD) and fragility fractures. The same holds true for coronary artery calcification (CAC): the lower the BMD, the higher the CAC. Trabecular bone score (TBS) iNsight software can analyze the existing BMD database to obtain th

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Pubic ramus fractures account for the most common types of pelvic fractures. The standard surgical approach for superior pubic ramus fractures (SPRF) is a minimally invasive percutaneous screw fixation. However, percutaneous closed reduction and internal fixation of anterior pelvic ring injuries have high failure rates of up to 15%. The aim of this biomechanical study was to evaluate the stability of SPRF following stabilization with retrograde placed cannulated compression headless screw (CCHS) versus conventional fully and partially threaded screws in an artificial pelvic

The value of bone density in predicting fracture is established, and there is a general consensus that bone mineral density (BMD) measurement should be considered in patients with conditions that place them at high risk for osteoporotic fracture. However, low bone density alone is judged to be insufficient to warrant treatment. Clinical risk factors have an important role in determining who should have BMD measurement, in assessing risk of fracture, and in determining who should be treated. A history and physical examination is essential in evaluating fracture risk and should include change in

Bone mineral mass, geometry and microstructure, hence determinants of fracture risk, result bone accrual during growth and bone loss later in life. Peak bone mass, which is reached by the end of the second decade of life, is mainly determined by genetic factors. Among other factors influencing bone capital, dietary intakes, particularly calcium and protein, play a significant role in peak bone mass attainment. Both nutrients are provided in dairy products, which accounts for 50-60% and 20-30% of the daily calcium and protein intakes, respectively. Children avoiding dairy products are at higher

INTRODUCTION: In forensic autopsy, pathologists pay attention to skull fracture lines. They are not much interested in the anatomical morphological variations of the skull bones, as long as the variations are not present. The interparietal bone is one of the anatomical variations that could be of interest for forensic pathologists.
CASE OUTLINE: We present a case of a 54-year-old man who, after a fall overlived a head injury for six weeks. By chance, autopsy revealed an undivided interparietal bone. Its lateral sutures were fused with parietal bones and unrecognizable from the anterior skull

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study was to investigate the mechanical properties of metacarpal long oblique and transverse shaft fractures stabilized by threaded intramedullary nails and dorsal plates and screws.
METHODS: Transverse and oblique midshaft osteotomies were created in 28 paired left and right metacarpal bones from four fresh frozen cadavers. Each matched pair was fixed with one 4.5-mm threaded intramedullary nail and one 2.0-mm dorsal stainless-steel plate and a screw construct. The bones were secured at the proximal end, by a 3-D-printed customized jig, to a tensile testing machi

Marfan syndrome (MFS) is an autosomal genetic disorder of connective tissue, due to alterated fibrillin-1. The aim of our study was to verify the rate of fractures in children with MFS in correlation to bone mineral density and compare the prevalence to the general population in the same latitude. We enrolled 80 patients (37 girls and 43 boys) with the diagnosis of Marfan syndrome, median age 10 y (3 to 17 years). Fracture occurrence was inferred from medical records of patients with MFS. Bone mineral density (BMD) was measured at lumbar spine, femoral neck and total femur by dual-energy x-ray

Osteogenesis imperfecta (OI) is the term used to describe a group of rare inherited skeletal disorders characterized by a greatly increased risk of fragility fractures (1). Mutations in several genes can cause OI but the condition is most commonly caused by mutations of COLIA1 or COL1A2 resulting in the production of collagen which is abnormal or present in reduced amounts. Fractures in OI are particularly common during childhood but the elevated fracture risk continues throughout life. Bone mineral density (BMD) can be reduced in OI but the magnitude of increase in fracture risk is far greate

Patients with multiple injuries frequently suffer bone fractures and are at high risk to develop fracture healing complications. Because of its key role both in systemic posttraumatic inflammation and fracture healing, the pleiotropic cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) may be involved in the pathomechanisms of trauma-induced compromised fracture healing. IL-6 signals are transmitted by two different mechanisms: classic signaling via the membrane-bound receptor (mIL-6R) and trans-signaling via its soluble form (sIL-6R). Herein, we investigated whether IL-6 classic and trans-signaling play different

OBJECTIVES: To review current knowledge of the epidemiology, pathogenesis, prevention and treatment of osteoporosis, with particular reference to issues related to the menopause.
METHODS: Peer-reviewed publications were assessed.
RESULTS: Much international variation exists in the prevalence of osteoporosis and the incidence of fracture. Risk fractures for osteoporosis are numerous. The menopause and other causes of hypogonadism in both women and men strongly predispose to osteoporosis. Various endocrinopathies, especially glucocorticoid excess, also are important. The contribution of family

BACKGROUND: Avalanches present a significant risk in mountainous environments, frequently causing severe trauma and death. While asphyxia is often the primary cause of mortality (65-100 %), the incidence of traumatic injuries, particularly bone fractures, may be increasing due to evolving recreational practices and climate change. This study aims to characterize the distribution and types of fractures in avalanche fatalities.
METHODS: We conducted a retrospective study at Grenoble Alpes University Hospital from April 2023 to April 2025. It included deceased adult avalanche victims with post-m
