Pseudomonas luteola is an aerobic, Gram negative rod, formerly classified as CDC group Ve-1 and Chryseomonas luteola. It is an uncommon clinical isolate. A previously healthy 59-year-old homosexual man with facial cellulitis and Pseudomonas luteola bacteremia is reported. Previously reported cases of P. luteola bacteremia have occurred in association with pancreatic abscess, prosthetic valve endocarditis, cardiac surgery, granulomatous hepatitis, peritonitis, and indwelling vascular catheters. This case suggests that the spectrum of disease caused by this bacteria may continue to expand.

A 6-year-old male blue-and-gold macaw (Ara ararauna) was presented with severe weakness, anorexia, and weight loss of 2 weeks duration. Cardiac auscultation revealed a soft systolic murmur. Blood cultures collected both antemortem and postmortem yielded pure isolates of Enterobacter cloacae. At necropsy, vegetative endocarditis was found involving the left atrioventricular valve. Microscopically, the lesion on the valve was characterized by a mixture of necrotic material, colonies of gram-negative bacteria, fibrosis, and inflammatory infiltrate consisting primarily of heterophils.

Since corticosteroids were introduced, a steadily increasing number of opportunistic pathogens have been causing major disease in both systemically and locally compromised hosts. In ocular disease, the most common cause of compromise (and of infection with such opportunistic pathogens as the herpeviruses, many gram-negative bacteria, numerous fungi and Toxoplasma) is the topical use of corticosteroids and antibiotic-corticosteroid preparations. To avoid the damaging and sometimes blinding results of opportunistic infection, the use of these preparations should be carefully restricted.

A Japanese black feedlot steer suddenly died after exhibiting astasia and cramping of the extremities. Necropsy of the animal revealed that the right kidney was enlarged and pale with severe nephrolithiasis. The urinary bladder displayed mucosal hemorrhage. Upon bacteriological investigation, Proteus mirabilis was isolated from the liver, spleen, right kidney, lungs and urine. Histopathological examination revealed necrotizing suppurative nephritis with the presence of numerous gram-negative bacilli and fibrinous suppurative cystitis with no bacilli. Immunohistochemical analysis revealed that

Osteomyelitis, or bone infection, affects all age groups and develops from various sources including haematogenously from distant infection foci, from external sources such as post-operative or post-traumatic wound infections and from adjoining soft tissue infections. Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus pyogenes and Haemophilus influenzae are the most common pathogens of haematogenous osteomyelitis. Aerobic and facultative gram-negative bacteria have emerged as significant pathogens in some types of osteomyelitis while anaerobic bacteria are increasingly recognized as potential pathogens in n…

Gram-negative bacteria Chlamydia pneumonia was found in 1989 to cause acute and chronic respiratory tract infections. This agent has been as well associated with other disease: atherogenesis and coronary heart disease. This study is aimed both at making an introduction to the issues related to C. pneumoniae diagnosis and presenting contemporary laboratory methods. Given the limitations of traditional diagnostics methods, serodiagnosis (EIA) and nucleic acids amplification (PCR, hybridisation) provide the most convincing evidence of C. pneumoniae infections. Culture and direct fluorescence anti…

Actinomyces sp. are commensal, filamentous, gram-positive, acid-fast-negative bacteria that can cause pyogranulomatous inflammation in animals and humans. Central nervous system (CNS) disease is a rare presentation of actinomycosis and is usually due to extension from infected wounds or seeding from distant sites. A dog with progressive, poorly localized neurologic signs had primary CNS actinomycosis without history or evidence of previous trauma or other organ involvement. Histologically, there was a severe pyogranulomatous meningoencephalitis with intralesional filamentous bacteria that were

Water-soluble antigens isolated from acetone-dried, gram-negative bacteria elicited reaginic antibody formation in mice. Antibodies specific for Escherichia coli antigens reacted with antigens isolated from several enterobacterial species tested, but not with antigens isolated from Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Reaginic antibodies induced by antigens isolated from a P. aeruginosa strain reacted with antigens isolated from several P.aeruginosa serotypes as well as with a purified protein component of the envelope of P. aeruginosa. The anti-Pseudomonas reagins did not cross-react with enterobacterial …

Gram-negative bacilli were examined for ESBL production by using four methods: double-disc synergy diffusion test (DDST), and three tests of combined discs with cefpodoxime, ceftazidime and cefotaxime alone and the same cephalosporins with clavulanic acid. Strains determined as ESBL-negative with all these tests were examined by using fifth method with cefpirome. 47,5% from 178 negative in other methods strains, appeared ESBL-positive in this test. The examined strains belonged to 16 different species. Most of them were Enterobacter cloaceae, Serratia marcescens, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Aci

Vancomycin is a naturally occurring cell-wall-targeting glycopeptide antibiotic. Due to the low potency of this antibiotic against Gram-negative pathogens, such as Escherichia coli, there is a limited knowledge about interactions between vancomycin and this group of bacteria. Here, we show that an in-frame 63 bp deletion of the lpp gene caused a fourfold increase in vancomycin resistance in E. coli. The resulting protein, LppΔ21, is 21 amino acids shorter than the wild-type Lpp, a helical structural lipoprotein that controls the width of the periplasmic space through its length. The mutant rem

Resistant bacteria have renewed our interest in the aminoglycoside drugs. Evidence on the efficiency of aminoglycosides in their different clinical uses is available from numerous randomized controlled trials and has been accrued and examined in recent systematic reviews and meta-analyses. Their results show that aminoglycosides should not be added to broad-spectrum beta-lactams to achieve synergism in treating Gram-negative infections as combination does not improve efficacy and adds side effects. The evidence from randomized trials in humans does not support the use of aminoglycosides in sta

Tonsillopharyngitis is very common in children, with Group A Streptococci being the most common bacterial etiology. Effective antibacterial treatment is imperative due to risk of rheumatic fever. Cephalosporins have been used successfully for the treatment of Group A beta-hemolytic Streptococcal (GABHS) tonsillopharyngitis. Cefprozil is a novel broad-spectrum oral cephalosporin. Cefprozil is rapidly absorbed from the gastrointestinal tract with high bioavailability. The excellent penetration of cefprozil into tonsillar and adenoidal tissue corresponds well with the clinical outcome. The drug p

The hospital and autopsy records of 40 infants who died with perinatal telencephalic leucoencephalopathy (PTL) (hypertrophic astrocytes and amphophilic globules in telencephalic white matter) were compared to those of 76 control infants who had no white matter abnormality. A linear discromination procedure, which takes into account multiple confounding factors, was used to estimate risk ratios. PTL was found more commonly in infants who (a) had bacteria isolated from blood at autopsy, (b) received intravenous glucose and water for more than one day, or (c) received kanamycin or streptomycin. Fusobacterium necrophorum is an anaerobic, gram-negative highly virulent bacillus, isolated from the oropharingeal cavity, the gastrointestinal tract, and the female genital tract. It is responsible of several clinical syndromes, mainly in children or adolescents, ranging from localized abscess, usually in the upper respiratory sites, to severe septicemic diseases, including meningitis. We report the fatal case of an immunocompetent male with suppurative otitis media and meningitis. Initial empiric antibiotic treatment was not effective. After the recovery of anaerobic gram-negative bacilli fr

Acute septic arthritis is a medical emergency both for its diagnosis and its treatment. There are numerous predisposing factors of this condition. Staphylococcus aureus is the most frequent isolated bacteria. In 15% of cases, the clinical picture is not a monoarticular involvement, but rather a polyarticular one. Diagnosis is based on the identification of the micro-organism by joint aspiration and/or blood cultures. These bacteriological samples have to be realized before antibiotics administration. Cultures remain negative in 10 to 20% of true cases of septic arthritis. The antibiotic treatm

Papillon Lefevre syndrome is presented in the cases of two female patients of the ages of 7 and 9, who exhibited all typical symptoms of the disease. Microbiological and histopathological studies were done and treatment provided. Actinobacillus actinomycetemcomitans, which is suspected as a pathogenic factor in the disease was identified as well as some other gram negative microorganisms and an antibiogram was performed in which amoxycillin plus clavulanic acid was most effective. Histopathological investigation also confirmed the presence of gram negative bacteria. Granular cell infiltration
