The sodium-calcium exchange (NCX) plays a pivotal role in regulating contractility and electrical activity in the heart. However, the effects of NCX blockers on ventricular arrhythmias are still controversial. We examined the effects of KB-R7943 (KBR) and SEA0400 (SEA), two NCX blockers, on aconitine-induced arrhythmias in guinea pigs using the ECG recordings and the current-clamp method. The effects of the aqueous extract of Pavetta crassipes leaves were studied on gastrointestinal and uterine smooth muscle preparations isolated from rabbit jejunum, guinea pig ileum and rat uterus. The content of cytochrome P-450 in liver microsomes from guinea pigs was decreased by ascorbic acid-deficiency. Since ascorbic acid is an antioxidant in vivo, the possible involvement of lipid peroxidation in this phenomenon was investigated. The degree to which Anopheles punctulatus complex members feed on humans in different Papua New Guinea villages has a significant effect on sporozoite rates. Among villages, the human blood index (HBI) of the members of the complex varied with the average number of persons sharing a bednet. As part of a cooperative inter-laboratory WHO supported project for the fractionation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis skin test preparations, four fractions (designated 15, 7, 4.75 and 3.5%) were evaluated by comparative skin tests on sensitized guinea-pigs. Experiments have been carried out on monkeys, goats and guinea-pigs to define as closely as possible the degree of attenuation of the Rev I strain of B. melitensis. Earlier studies had conclusively demonstrated the effectiveness of the strain as an immunizing agent of the three animal species and had suggested that the degree of attenuation was such as to warrant limited study in humans.
