Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) and JC virus in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients with progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy.

Of the 93 acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) patients autopsied between 1983 and 1986, 27 had evidence of viral encephalitis of which 3 had progressive multifocal leukoencephalopathy (PML), confirmed by electron microscopy. Using in situ hybridization with biotinylated JC virus probes, paraffin sections from the brains of these 27 patients were examined. JC virus was found only in those patients with histologically proven PML, while no evidence of JC virus was detected in the brains of the other 24 AIDS patients despite the presence of white matter pathology. Brain biopsies of the PML

Utility of Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra and digital chest radiography for the diagnosis and treatment of TB in people living with HIV: a randomised controlled trial (XACT-TB).

BACKGROUND: TB is a leading cause of morbidity among HIV positive individuals. Accurate algorithms are needed to achieve early TB diagnosis and treatment. We investigated the use of Xpert MTB/RIF Ultra in combination with chest radiography for TB diagnosis in ambulatory HIV positive individuals. METHODS: This was a randomised controlled trial with a 2-by-2 factorial design. Outpatient HIV clinic attendees with cough were randomised to four arms: Arm 1-Standard Xpert/no chest radiography (CXR); Arm 2-Standard Xpert/CXR; Arm 3-Xpert Ultra/no CXR; and Arm 4-Xpert Ultra/CXR. Pharmacokinetics of Raltegravir in HIV-Infected Patients on Rifampicin-Based Antitubercular Therapy.

BACKGROUND: Rifampicin (RIF) induces UGT1A1, an enzyme involved in raltegravir (RAL) elimination, thereby potentially lowering RAL exposure. We examined the pharmacokinetics of RAL in human immunodeficiency virus (HIV)-infected patients on RIF-based antitubercular therapy in the French National Agency for HIV/AIDS and Viral Hepatitis Research 12 180 Reflate Tuberculosis trial. METHODS: Patients started RAL in combination with tenofovir disoproxil fumarate and lamivudine after initiation of RIF (10 mg/kg/day). In arm 1 (n = 21), they received 400 mg RAL twice daily; in arm 2 (n = 16), they rec

[HIV infection and tuberculosis].

The number of people infected with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) is gradually increasing in Japan, and the morbidity rate from tuberculosis in the Japanese people is high. Accordingly, the number of cases with both infections is considered to increase in the future. Our hospital has already encountered 31 cases of HIV associated tuberculosis. HIV infects mainly CD4-positive cells. The extreme decrease in the cell count results in serious cellular immunological disorder. CD4-positive cell disorder induces disorders of B lymphocytes, cytotoxic T cells, natural killer cells, and macrophage f

Efficacy of low doses of the polyethylene glycol derivative of interleukin-2 in modulating the immune response of patients with human immunodeficiency virus type 1 infection.

Interleukin-2 (IL-2) is a key cytokine in cellular immunity. Human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1)-infected individuals lack IL-2 because of low CD4+ T lymphocyte numbers. In an attempt to enhance cellular immunity, low-dose recombinant human (rh) IL-2 at 10 micrograms or 180,000 units or its polyethylene glycol (PEG) derivative at 9 micrograms or 36,000 units was given by intracutaneous injection to 8 HIV-1-infected men for 30 days. Participants had no evidence of opportunistic infection and received concurrent zidovudine. IL-2 treatment was nontoxic and elicited a local cellular respon

Toward a Unified Multidimensional HIV Cure: Integrating Virologic, Clinical, and Immunologic Perspectives.

Despite major advances in antiretroviral therapy (ART), a definitive cure for human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) remains elusive. This review aims to propose a unified, multidimensional framework for HIV cure that integrates virologic, immunologic, and clinical perspectives to guide future research and therapeutic strategies. A structured narrative review was conducted using PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar to identify relevant literature on HIV cure research. Articles published primarily between 2008 and 2026 were screened based on relevance, scientific rigor, and contributi

Mother-to-child HIV exposure and its relation with neurodevelopmental disorders: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: Mother-to-child Exposure to HIV (MCE) is a growing concern. While antiretroviral therapy has reduced vertical transmission rates, the inflammatory response and adverse neurobehavioural outcomes in children are conflicting. Thus, this review aims to synthesise existing evidence between HIV exposure and neurodevelopmental outcomes in MCE compared to unexposed children. METHODS: A comprehensive search was conducted to screen systematic reviews until July of 2025 were investigated, investigating the relationship between HIV exposure and neurodevelopmental disorders. The PECO framework

Brief Report: Is Gestational Exposure to HIV and Protease Inhibitors Associated With Timing of Pubertal Onset?

BACKGROUND: Few studies have evaluated the influence of gestational HIV/antiretroviral exposure on pubertal onset in children who are HIV-exposed but uninfected (CHEU). METHODS: CHEU in the Surveillance Monitoring for ART Toxicities study and children HIV-unexposed uninfected (CHUU) in the Bone Mineral Density in Childhood Study with Tanner staging at age 9 years were included. Pubertal onset was defined as Tanner stage ≥2 for each sex-specific puberty indicator. Log-binomial regression models were fit to estimate relative risks (RRs) of pubertal onset in CHEU vs. CHUU, adjusted for exact age

Patient Perspectives on Rapid Antiretroviral Treatment Initiation for HIV: Implications for Best Practices.

Rapid start of antiretroviral therapy (ART) has been recommended by the World Health Organization since 2017 and is an important approach toward optimizing HIV care. Our objective was to understand the experiences of people with HIV (PWH) undergoing rapid start and to synthesize lessons learned to improve our program. This mixed-methods study recruited newly diagnosed patients establishing care at an urban safety-net clinic in Dallas, TX, between 2021 and 2022. Eligible PWH were ART-naïve and diagnosed with HIV within 12 months prior to the rapid start visit. Participants completed baseline an

Barriers and facilitators to engagement with the PrEP care continuum among sexual minority men in China: a systematic review.

Sexual minority men (SMM) in China are disproportionately affected by the HIV epidemic, yet utilization of HIV prevention services, such as pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP), remains low. This systematic review summarizes the barriers and facilitators to the PrEP care continuum among Chinese SMM using thematic analysis. Following PRISMA guidelines, a comprehensive literature search was conducted in English and Chinese databases, including PubMed, EMBASE, Web of Science, PsycINFO, CINAHL, CNKI and WanFang. From 820 records, 50 studies met inclusion criteria, revealing five key themes: (1) sexual

Preexposure Prophylaxis for HIV Prevention: Awareness and Interest among a Northern Midwestern US Indigenous Population.

American Indians/Alaska Natives (hereafter referred to as "Indigenous Peoples") experience inequities in rates of HIV infection. Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) holds considerable potential for reversing HIV inequities among Indigenous Peoples; however, little research has explored PrEP awareness and interest within Indigenous contexts. This research explores PrEP awareness and interest among a population of Indigenous People in the Northern Midwestern United States. We conducted a survey on the reservation lands of a Tribal community in Fall 2022 that included measures of demographics, socios

Social Impacts of Multi-City HIV Research Participation Among Sexual and Gender Expansive Individuals in Kazakhstan.

BACKGROUND: Sexual and gender expansive (SGE) individuals in Kazakhstan are disproportionately affected by HIV yet stigma and discrimination pose ethical and practical challenges for HIV prevention research involving them. Although researchers are tasked with ensuring that risks of research participation are reasonable in relation to its benefits, participant-reported risks and benefits of research participation-including negative (NSIs) and positive social impacts (PSIs) on personal relationships, social status, health, and other life domains-among SGE populations have received little attenti

Empowerment in prevention: a qualitative inquiry into Black girl-centred strategies for reducing HIV/STI and drug misuse risk.

Black girls in the United States are disproportionately diagnosed with sexually transmitted infections (STIs), which can increase the risk of contracting HIV (human immunodeficiency virus), compared to adolescent girls of other races. Therefore, this study was designed to understand barriers to impactful HIV/STI and substance use prevention programmes for Black girls. Data was collected between October 2021 and June 2022 from twelve focus groups which included (N = 62) participants who identified as Black and female between the ages of 13 and 18 years old. Using intersectionality theory as a g

HIV/AIDS Mortality Trends in Peru: A Natural Experiment of COVID-19's Disruption and Health Disparities (2017-2024).

Peru's already concentrated HIV epidemic confronted an unprecedented shock with the arrival of SARS-CoV-2. With a natural experiment design, leveraging 96 months (2017-2024) of aggregate national death-certificate data (n = 9,917), we applied join-point regression, attributable-fraction calculations of deaths excess, and Newey-West-corrected interrupted time series models to disentangle indirect service disruptions from direct viral coinfection on HIV/AIDS mortality. Using population-level data, we estimated both relative and absolute measures of disparity, providing novel insights into popula

"I will take PrEP because that's what will help me not to get infected with HIV": barriers to and facilitators of pre-exposure prophylaxis and condom use among adolescent girls and young women enrolled in a school-based HIV prevention program in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: The Imagine programme is a school-based HIV prevention program offering preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP), condoms and other social and structural interventions to adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) in South Africa. PrEP uptake and adherence together with the provision of condoms has not been extensively studied in the school context. We explored the barriers to and facilitators of PrEP and condom usage among Imagine programme beneficiaries using the HIV prevention cascade framework. METHODS: Sixteen AGYW aged 16-20 years who had never taken PrEP, were on PrEP or had stopped P
