Between 1974 and 1991, hearing preservation surgery was attempted on 161 of 476 patients with a variety of cerebellopontine (CPA) tumors, at New York University School of Medicine. This included 146 unilateral acoustic neuromas, seven meningiomas, and six cases of neurofibromatosis. The suboccipital/retrosigmoid approach was used almost exclusively. Fourteen children with the fetal alcohol syndrome were evaluated by standard audiologic procedures. Thirteen of the 14 children had childhood histories of hearing disorders. As a part of the longitudinal evaluation of a cluster of neonatal hearing screening procedures in a single high risk population, Crib-O-Gram (COG) and auditory brain stem response (ABR) screening have been administered to 190 infants in the NICU. Multiple COG screening showed inconsistent results in 25% of the infants. The COG failure rate was 27.9% with 2 out of 3 pass criterion. Heredopathia atactica polyneuritiformis is a biochemically defined disease with a specific dietary treatment. It is an autosomal inborn error of metabolism. The phytanic acid is of exogenous origin and stems mainly from preformed phytanic acid in foods. In two Norwegian patients, serum phytanic acid has been brought down to normal levels and one of them has been followed for 15 years. During this period of dietary treatment there was no worsening of hearing.

A 40-year-old male administration employee suffered an acute acoustic trauma while attending a pop concert. This paper discusses the differential diagnosis. The patient's mother was also hard of hearing following bomb attacks during the last war. The degree of hearing loss did not correlate with the effect of the noise in either case. It is therefore assumed that the inner ear has developed greater susceptibility to noise. The origin of this is attributed to a genetically induced weakness of the cochlea to exogenous factors.

We have demonstrated the elevated reflex thresholds and decreased bandwidth effect in listeners with sensorineural hearing loss, and we have extended this generalization to include those with hearing loss related to presbycusis. Arachnitic adhesions of the pontine angle can damage the VIIIth cranial nerve to complete hearing loss. If there exists only a circumscript damage of the myeline sheet, this functional loss is reversible after decompression of the nerve. Preoperatively, the electrocochleography and the cisternoscopy discover this type of nerve damage and so, the probability of the postoperative hearing recovery is quite predictable.
