BACKGROUND: Hyperimmunoglobulinemia D and periodic fever syndrome (HIDS) is a disorder diagnosed with low frequency, that produces a very prolonged and recurrent fever with other symptoms and analytical markers of inflammation. Its origin seems to be hereditary with a recessive autosomic pattern, but its pathogenic mechanisms are unclear. Within a 6-year period from January 1991 to December 1996, 249 patients of salmonellosis admitted to Kaohsiung Medical College Hospital were enrolled for clinical and microbiological analysis. The number of patients increased by year from 1991 (14 patients) to 1996 (79 patients), especially in the case of nontyphoid salmonellosis. LAT (linker for activation of T cells) is an integral membrane protein of 36-38 kd that plays an important role in T cell activation. Both dogs and humans can be coinfected with various Ehrlichia, Bartonella, Rickettsia, and Babesia species. We investigated a kennel of sick Walker Hounds and their owners in southeastern North Carolina for evidence of tick-borne infections and associated risk factors. A high degree of coinfection was documented in the dog population. We describe four cases with several findings of Fanconi anemia (FA), but without hypersensitivity to DNA cross-linking that is the distinguishing characteristic of FA. SETTING: Healthy volunteers in an academic research environment.
PATIENT(S): Eight healthy men, aged 25-42 years were selected.

Thirty-five patients underwent allogeneic bone marrow transplantation (BMT) from unrelated donors (UD), in a pilot study of the Canadian Bone Marrow Transplant Group with techniques routinely used in BMT from HLA-identical related donors. Thirty-two of the patients had hematologic malignancies and 3 had aplastic anemia. Donors and patients were matched at all HLA loci tested serologically in 29 cases; 19 of these patients had mutually non-reactive mixed leukocyte cultures (MLC's). Thirty seven patients with sarcoidosis were examined using ultrasound (US) to determine the size of the spleen. A Spleen Index (SI) was employed to evaluate splenomegaly and the SI was calculated using long (a) and short (b) dimensions on the sectional splenotomogram (SI = a x b). In 21 (57%) of these patients the spleen was judged ultrasonographically to be enlarged (SI 30), but in only 3 was it palpable. The effects of a new drug, N-2-(p-chlorophenoxy)-isobutyryl-N'-morpholinomethylurea (plafibride, ITA 104), were studied in a double blind study lasting four months on a group of 30 patients with a type IV hyperlipoproteinemia.
