Menstrual health inequities in carceral settings: a global systematic review.

This study aimed to synthesise global evidence on menstrual health experiences, needs, and barriers among incarcerated populations and identify opportunities to advance menstrual health equity in prison settings. Following PRISMA guidelines, we systematically searched PubMed/MEDLINE, Embase, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar for studies published between January 2000 and December 2025. Quantitative, qualitative, mixed-methods studies, and relevant grey literature were included. Two reviewers independently screened studies, extracted data, appraised quality, and synthesised findings na

A rare cause of bowel obstruction: strangulated internal hernia through a congenital defect in the falciform ligament.

INTRODUCTION: Internal herniation through a defect in the falciform ligament is an exceptionally rare cause of small bowel obstruction. Few cases have been reported in the literature. CASE PRESENTATION: We report the case of a 24-year-old man with no previous medical or surgical history who presented with acute epigastric pain and vomiting for 12 hours. Physical examination revealed localized tenderness in the epigastric region. Computed tomography (CT) demonstrated clustered and distended small bowel loops in the prehepatic region, with mesenteric vessels converging toward a central point be

The Presence of Others and the Possibility of Discovery During the Commission of Child Sexual Abuse Within Private Homes.

Child sexual abuse (CSA) most often occurs inside private residential settings, yet little is known about how the presence of others or physical barriers such as closed doors meaningfully influence whether abuse occurs or can be detected. Despite the common assumption that CSA requires complete isolation, situational crime prevention (SCP) predicts that the presence of others should reduce opportunity for abuse, yet the extent to which this holds in practice remains poorly understood. This study, conducted in the United States, examined whether this assumption holds true in private homes by in

Contributions of Qualitative Methods to Real-Time Implementation Strategy Design: A Case Study Linking Justice Involved Individuals at Risk for HIV to Pre-exposure Prophylaxis.

Pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) exemplifies a medical advance that is highly efficacious in reducing an individual's risk of acquiring HIV. However, the use of PrEP remains considerably suboptimal in communities that could benefit from it most, especially in the southern United States where HIV infection rates are highest. We conducted a study using both qualitative methods and implementation science to develop and deploy a multicomponent implementation strategy to link individuals being released from jail to PrEP services in a southern US city. Implementation science supports the translation

Psychological well-being and resilience experiences of educators teaching in juvenile correctional facilities: a scoping review.

INTRODUCTION: Education is widely acknowledged as a cornerstone of rehabilitation for incarcerated youth. However, less attention has been paid to the specific realities faced by the educators who deliver it. These educators often operate under intense stress, experiencing burnout and emotional exhaustion while managing the complex and multifaceted needs of their students. This scoping review seeks to examine and synthesize psychological well-being and resilience experiences of educators working within juvenile correctional facilities. METHODS: Our methodology was informed by the Joanna Brigg

The association between interoception and psychopathic traits.

INTRODUCTION: Psychopathic traits are characterized by pervasive emotional deficits, including diminished empathy and remorse, heightened impulsivity, and antisocial behavior. Prior work has suggested that these traits may be partly shaped by physiological abnormality, although their associations with interoception-defined as the sensitivity to and awareness of internal bodily signals-has been inconsistent and understudied. The present study aimed to clarify the nature of emotional impairments in psychopathy by examining potential interoceptive abnormalities during a social stress task in a no

Personalized 3D-Printed Hybrid PDMS and PEEK Implants for Revisional Orbitomaxillary Reconstruction: A Translational Case-Based Technical Note.

The reconstruction of complex orbitomaxillary defects requires biomaterials that can simultaneously provide structural stability, biocompatibility, and accurate restoration of facial volume and contour. While rigid polymers such as polyetheretherketone (PEEK) offer reliable mechanical support, they do not adequately replicate the viscoelastic behavior of soft tissues. This report presents a translational revision case employing a personalized hybrid biomaterial approach that combines a 3D-printed PEEK implant for structural orbital floor support with a patient-specific polydimethylsiloxane (PD

A Case of N-Methyl-D-Aspartate (NMDA) Autoimmune Encephalitis in a 34-Year-Old Man Thought to Have Schizophrenia.

BACKGROUND: N-methyl-d-aspartate (NMDA) autoantibody encephalitis is a rare autoimmune condition affecting approximately 1.5 per million people per year [1]. It predominantly occurs in young women and is often associated with tumors, particularly teratomas [3]. The diagnosis is aided by testing cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) or serum for NMDA receptor antibodies along with careful evaluation of symptoms. Misdiagnosis is common, as its symptoms can mimic other more prevalent conditions, such as upper respiratory illnesses or psychiatric disorders like acute psychosis or schizophrenia. CASE REPORT:

Validation of the Personality Disorder Severity for ICD-11 (PDS-ICD-11) Scale in a Danish Mixed Clinical and Prison Treatment Sample.

The International Classification of Diseases, 11th Edition (ICD-11) has adopted a new model for the diagnosis of personality disorder (PD), and novel measures have therefore been developed to assist in its assessment. This study examined the psychometric properties of the Personality Disorder Severity ICD-11 (PDS-ICD-11) scale in a mixed sample of Danish adults in prison (n = 101; 100% males; Mage = 34.57, SDage = 9.27) or in a rehabilitation program (n = 132; 64% males; Mage = 39.47, SDage = 11.60) with co-occurring substance use dependency and personality pathology. National consensus statement on opioid agonist treatment in custodial settings.

INTRODUCTION: Opioid use and dependence are prevalent among incarcerated people, contributing to elevated rates of overdose and other harms in this population. Opioid agonist treatment (OAT) has been shown to be an effective intervention to mitigate these risks. However, challenges to health care implementation in the custodial sector result in suboptimal and variable access to OAT in prisons nationally. MAIN RECOMMENDATIONS: Among a national multidisciplinary expert panel, we conducted a modified Delphi study that yielded 19 recommendations to government, relevant health authorities and cust

An Interpretive Description of Drug Withdrawal Among Pregnant Women in Jail.

OBJECTIVE: To explore the experience of drug withdrawal among pregnant women in jail. DESIGN: A qualitative interpretive descriptive approach. SETTING/PROBLEM: The care of incarcerated pregnant women constitutes a complex and significant public health problem. Many have substance use disorder (SUD) and cycle in and out of jails in their community, resulting in repeated experiences of drug withdrawal. Most jails do not provide medication-assisted therapy for management of withdrawal, a situation that violates standards of care set by leading health organizations. The experience of drug withdr

Wastewater threshold as an indicator of COVID-19 cases in correctional facilities for public health response: A modeling study.

Although prison facilities are not fully isolated from the communities in which they are located, most of the population is confined and requires high levels of health vigilance and protection. This study aimed to examine the dynamic relationship between facility-level wastewater viral concentrations and the probability of at least one positive COVID-19 case within the facility. The study period was from January 11, 2021 to May 8, 2023. Wastewater samples were collected and analyzed for SARS-CoV-2 (N1) and pepper mild mottle virus (PMMoV) three times weekly across 14 prison facilities in Kentu

Older Adults in Administrative Quagmire: A Scoping Review of Policy and Program Coordination Across Six Marginalized Older Adult Populations.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Coordination of governmental action is crowded with policies and programs that are highly interdependent, sometimes operating in silos if not contradicting each other. These dilemmas, or administrative quagmires, are heightened for older adults in general, but they are particularly problematic for marginalized older adults because these groups often require public assistance and support. This scoping review studies the coordination of governmental action on aging published in social science journals, focusing on 6 groups of marginalized older adults: those with histo

A Case of Invasive Metastatic Tonsillar Squamous Cell Carcinoma Complicated by Polymicrobial Wound Infection in a Previously Healthy 34-Year-Old Inmate.

This case report describes a distinctive presentation of invasive metastatic tonsillar head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) that recurred in a 34-year-old African American inmate, defying the expectations of conventional risk factors. This case underscores the significance of nuanced care in atypical HNSCC scenarios. The patient presented in October 2021 with bilateral lymphadenopathy and dysphagia, which led to the diagnosis of tonsillar squamous cell carcinoma. The patient's treatment trajectory included radiation therapy with concurrent cisplatin, a subsequent radical right neck di

Classic incisional hernia repair under awake thoracic combined spinal -epidural anesthesia in a geriatric patient with multiple co-morbidities.

INTRODUCTION AND IMPORTANCE: Routine general anesthesia with tracheal intubation is an undesirable and risky technique in individuals with pre-existing chronic respiratory diseases undergoing abdominal surgery. Instead, other modalities of regional anesthesia, such as combined thoracic spinal -epidural anesthesia, could be used as the only anesthetic technique with more excellent health care outcomes. CASE PRESENTATION: We introduce a 72-year-old morbidly obese female with multiple comorbidities who underwent successful open surgical repair for incarcerated abdominal hernia under awake combin
