Interpersonal factors differentiating current states of suicidal ideation among young Internet gamers with past suicidal ideation.

BACKGROUND: Accumulating evidence highlights associations between young people's gaming behaviors, particularly those experiencing Internet Gaming Disorder (IGD) and mental health conditions, including suicidal ideation (SI). However, most studies have not explored how young gamers with poorer mental health - especially SI - can transition towards better mental health. Interpersonal factors such as loneliness, social support, and help-seeking can be key ingredients for resilience, influencing chances of bouncing back from a suicidal state. METHODS: 1610 gamers aged 11-29 years were surveyed r

Differential associations between relationship stressors and natural killer cell gene expression by race/ethnicity and sex among older U.S. adults.

Close interpersonal relationships can shape health, in part, through immune-related biological pathways. While chronic relational stress has been linked to inflammation and immune dysregulation, little is known about how such stressors relate to transcriptional markers of innate immune activity. As such, we investigated whether multiple forms of relationship stress were associated with altered expression of two genes related to natural killer cell function, FCGR3A and NCAM1, and whether these associations varied by sex or race/ethnicity. Data were drawn from the Midlife in the United States st…

Seeking support or concealing? A longitudinal study of adolescents' friendships, peer victimization, depression, and coping with peer relationship stressors.

Friends are often a source of emotional and informational support, which suggests that friends can directly assist adolescents to more effectively cope with stressful experiences, reducing emotional distress. In this longitudinal study, we examined the direct impact of friendship on adolescents' use of help seeking, comfort seeking, concealment, and rumination to cope with peer stressors. We used path modeling with two waves of data to consider the unique roles of friendship quality and coping on change in peer victimization (both overt and relational/reputational) and depression over time. Internet-based therapy for social anxiety in adults in Portugal (PORTiSOFIE) and its impact on sexual and relationship satisfaction: study protocol for a randomized controlled trial.

BACKGROUND: Social anxiety disorder (SAD) is a common condition that affects intrapersonal (e.g., distress and impairment) and interpersonal functioning (e.g., difficulties in amorous relationships). People with SAD tend to have difficulties in communicating feelings to partners and report lower levels of sexual and relationship satisfaction. Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) for SAD has been found to reduce symptoms of social anxiety, but less is known about its impact on relationship functioning. Internet-based CBT (iCBT) has gained attention for its primary advantage: bridging distances an

Associations Between Interpersonal Problems, Negative Affect, and Symptoms of Night Eating Syndrome.

OBJECTIVE: Research on social support, attachment insecurity, and negative affect in night eating syndrome (NES) is sparse, although these factors have been proposed as key components of etiological models in other eating disorders. This study investigated whether individuals with night eating (NE) symptoms reported lower social support, greater attachment insecurity, and increased negative affect compared to those without, and examined if negative affect mediated the relationship between interpersonal problems (lack of social support, attachment insecurity) and NE symptoms. METHOD: A represe

Co-rumination and intrapersonal cognitive processes predict distress: Longitudinal evidence from the COVID-19 pandemic.

Perseverative thinking and catastrophizing have well established associations with fear and distress. However, less is known about the impact of interpersonal dynamics, such as co-rumination, on these intrapersonal cognitive processes and subsequent stress. The present study addresses this knowledge gap. A sample of 433 adults from across the United States was recruited online and completed measures of co-rumination, perseverative thinking, catastrophizing, and demographic characteristics early in the COVID-19 pandemic, and the COVID Stress Scales (CSS) at six month follow up. Co-rumination, p

Involving men in pregnancy: a cross-sectional analysis of the role of self-efficacy, gender-equitable attitudes, relationship dynamics and knowledge among men in Kinshasa.

BACKGROUND: Although male participation in maternal health has gained increasing recognition and support over the years, little is known about male involvement during pregnancy in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. This paper identified male involvement patterns during pregnancy and evaluated their associations with pregnancy and birth preparedness knowledge, gender-equitable attitudes, self-efficacy, and co-parental relationship factors. Lastly, it explored the moderating effect of gender-equitable attitudes and intimate partner violence on the association between relationship satisfaction

Racial/Ethnic Differences in Women's Life Event Exposure Across Midlife.

OBJECTIVE: Stressful life events are associated with poorer physical, cognitive, and mental health. Examining life events trends across midlife illustrates normative experiences of stress in a critical life period for intervention and disease prevention. Further, there is a critical need for research with racially/ethnically diverse samples to identify differences in life event exposure, as they may relate to later health disparities. METHOD: Annual life event reports were analyzed from 3,066 White, Black, Hispanic, Chinese, and Japanese women in the Study of Women's Health Across the Nation.

The development and psychometric examination of the partner investment in health scale.

OBJECTIVE: Relationship partners' impacts on health are not fully captured by existing measures. A measure that applies to a prevention context and accounts for both partners' perspectives is needed. This work developed and assessed the psychometric properties of the novel Partner Investment in Health scale (PI-H). DESIGN: A cross-sectional design assessed participants (N = 261) using an online survey. Exploratory factor analyses were used to determine the PI-H factor structure. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Items assessed the person's investment in their partner's health and their perception of th

The effects of social deprivation on adolescent development and mental health.

Adolescence (the stage between 10 and 24 years) is a period of life characterised by heightened sensitivity to social stimuli and the increased need for peer interaction. The physical distancing measures mandated globally to contain the spread of COVID-19 are radically reducing adolescents' opportunities to engage in face-to-face social contact outside their household. In this interdisciplinary Viewpoint, we describe literature from a variety of domains that highlight how social deprivation in adolescence might have far-reaching consequences. Human studies have shown the importance of peer acc

What do you really need? Self- and partner-reported intervention preferences within cognitive behavioural therapy for reassurance seeking behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Reassurance seeking (RS) in obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) is commonly addressed in cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) using a technique called reducing accommodation. Reducing accommodation is a behaviourally based CBT intervention that may be effective; however, there is a lack of controlled research on its use and acceptability to clients/patients, and case studies suggest that it can be associated with negative emotional/behavioural consequences. Providing support to encourage coping with distress is a cognitively based CBT intervention that may be an effective alternativ

Predictors of treatment outcome in OCD: An interpersonal perspective.

Although effective treatments for obsessive compulsive disorder (OCD) are increasingly available, a considerable percentage of patients fails to respond or relapses. Predictors associated with improved outcome of OCD were identified. However, information on interpersonal determinants is lacking. This study investigated the contribution of attachment style and expressed emotion to the outcome of exposure and response prevention (ERP), while accounting for previously documented intrapersonal (i.e., symptom severity and personality pathology) predictors. Using logistic regression analyses and mul

Health literacy in adolescents with sickle cell disease: The influence of caregiver health literacy.

PURPOSE: After patients with sickle cell disease (SCD) transfer from pediatric care to adult care, significant morbidity and mortality occurs. There are many possible contributors to the success or failure of this transition. One hypothesis is that health literacy influences this transition from pediatric to adult health care. The purpose of this study was twofold: (a) to examine the relationship between caregiver and adolescent health literacy levels in adolescents with SCD; and (b) to further describe individual traits contributing to health literacy levels in adolescents with SCD as describ

The vulnerability to interpersonal stress in eating disorders: The role of insecure attachment in the emotional and cortisol responses to the trier social stress test.

BACKGROUND: Vulnerability to interpersonal stress is an important risk factor for Eating Disorders (EDs). Adult insecure attachment involves different emotional, biological and behavioural strategies to cope with social stressors. However, although attachment has proved to play a pivotal role in EDs, no study has yet explored the effects of attachment on the emotional and hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal (HPA) axis responses to a psychosocial stressor in EDs. METHODS: Fifty-two ED women (29 with anorexia nervosa, 23 with bulimia nervosa) underwent the Trier Social Stress Test (TSST). Their emot

Vitamin A Deficiency Induces Autistic-Like Behaviors in Rats by Regulating the RARβ-CD38-Oxytocin Axis in the Hypothalamus.

SCOPE: Vitamin A (VA) is an essential nutrient for the development of the brain. We previously found that children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) have a significant rate of VA deficiency (VAD). In the current study, we aim to determine whether VAD is a risk factor for the generation of autistic-like behaviors via the transcription factor retinoic acid receptor beta (RARβ)-regulated cluster of differentiation 38 (CD38)-oxytocin (OXT) axis. METHODS AND RESULTS: Gestational VAD or VA supplementation (VAS) rat models are established, and the autistic-like behaviors in the offspring rats are

Trauma, attachment style, and somatization: a study of women with dyspareunia and women survivors of sexual abuse.

BACKGROUND: Evidence points toward shared characteristics between female survivors of sexual abuse and women with dyspareunia. This study explored, for the first time, similarities and differences between women who were exposed to sexual abuse to those with dyspareunia, in order to examine whether insecure attachment styles and high somatization level are associated with trauma among women with dyspareunia. METHODS: Attachment styles were explored using the Experience in Close Relationships Scale to reflect participants' levels of anxiety and avoidance. Somatization was assessed using the Bri

Attachment and posttraumatic growth after breast cancer: A dyadic approach.

OBJECTIVE: Cancer poses unique challenges for the couple relationship. From a relational perspective, successful adaptation may be less dependent on the circumstances of being the "patient" or the "caregiver" than on how couples successfully integrate cancer into their relationship. In this article, we study posttraumatic growth through attachment theory, which provides a useful framework to explore the role of intimate processes dyadically. METHOD: The sample comprised 84 heterosexual married and cohabitating couples. Women were in adjuvant treatment for breast cancer or in the posttreatment

How Do We Get Partners to Test for HIV?: Predictors of Uptake of Partner HIV Testing Following Individual Outpatient Provider Initiated HIV Testing in Rural Uganda.

In a sample of outpatients (152 females, 152 males) receiving individual provider-initiated HIV testing and counselling (PITC) we aimed to identify factors associated with subsequent uptake of partner HIV testing. Purposively sampled outpatients receiving PITC at a Ugandan hospital completed a questionnaire immediately prior to testing for HIV, and then at 3 and 6 months post-test. By 6-month follow-up 96% of participants reported disclosing their HIV test results to their partner and 96.4% reported asking their partner to test. 38.8% of women and 78.9% of men reported that their partner teste
