This paper is a clinical study of 57 cases of infection with Trichophyton tonsurans (T. tonsurans) examined in our clinic between January 2004 and July 2006. The patients were 31 high school students, 19 junior high school students, 2 primary school students, 1 kindergartener, and 4 sports instructors. The male:female ratio was 51:6. Most patients were male Judo practitioners. Patients were clinically categorized as follows: 13 cases of tinea capitis {10 containing black dot ringworms (BDR), 2 scaled, and 1 with inflammation}, 41 cases of tinea corporis, 1 case of tinea manum, and 7 carriers.

PURPOSE: The aim of our study was to update the rate of severe complications following CT-guided needle biopsy in Japan via a mailed survey.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: Postal questionnaires regarding CT-guided needle biopsy were sent out to multiple hospitals in Japan. Nine group B streptococci (GBS) strains were isolated from five toxic shock-like syndrome cases of nonpregnant adults in Japan from 2001 to 2005. All of them were identified as Streptococcus agalactiae. The serotypes of these strains were Ib, III, V, and VII. Based on specific sequencing, we found that a Borrelia garinii strain from a rodent in Fukui Prefecture, Japan was highly similar to the unique Borrelia strains (pattern R'/R) isolated in northeastern China and Korea, and to strains from ticks feeding on migratory birds in Fukui Prefecture. These findings indicate that the Borrelia with this unique pattern may be locally naturalized to the epizootic transmission cycle in Japan, and that Borrelia is dispersed from the Asian Continent to Japan via migratory birds.

METHODS: Questionnaires about the occurrence of hydatidiform mole were mailed to all clinics and hospitals in Chiba Prefecture between 1974 and 2000. The diagnosis of hydatidiform mole was based on the post-operative morphological and/or pathological findings. To examine the mutual association of risk factors for both Helicobacter pylori (H. pylori) infection and chronic atrophic gastritis (CAG), a cross-sectional study on 954 residents of a rural town in Japan was conducted.
