The sources of bioavailable toxic metals in sediments regulated their aggregated form, environmental responses and health risk-a case study in Liujiang River Basin, China.

Bioavailable toxic metals (BTMs) predominantly stem from anthropogenic emissions, but their emission inventory remain unspecified. Considering the regulation of toxic metals (TMs) forms, variations in BTMs input linked to sources likely result from specific TM forms. To test this, we identified BTMs sources in Liujiang River Basin sediments, focusing on their aggregation and risk based on varying TMs forms. The findings indicated BTMs ratios decreased in the order as follows: Cd > Pb > Zn > Cu > As > Cr > Hg. PMF identified BTMs sourced from industrial, agricultural, and mining emissions with …

Toxic metals and trace elements in maternal blood and urinary tract infection during the first 2 years of life: The Japan Environment and Children's Study.

BACKGROUND: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common bacterial infections in young children and can lead to long-term renal complications. While established risk factors exist, the effect of prenatal exposure to toxic metals and trace elements on UTI risk remains unclear. We examined the association between maternal blood levels of these elements and UTI risk in early childhood. METHODS: This study is based on a nationwide birth cohort, the Japan Environment and Children's Study (JECS), which obtained data from over 100,000 pregnancies through 15 Regional Centres across Japan. Maternal bloo…

Capacity of an aquatic macrophyte, Pistia stratiotes L., for removing heavy metals from water in the Oued Fez River and their accumulation in its tissues.

Water resources, particularly rivers, are increasingly exposed to pollutants, especially heavy metals of chemical origin, which are difficult to monitor and can pose risks to both ecosystems and human health. This study assesses heavy metal contamination in the Oued Fez River, focusing on the bioaccumulation by the invasive plant Pistia stratiotes. The methodology involves measuring and comparing metal concentrations in water and plant tissues. Results revealed that while aluminium (Al) slightly exceeded recommended levels at 0.2978 mg L-1, other metals like zinc (Zn), iron (Fe), copper (Cu), …

Distribution of metals in different environmental compartments and oxidative stress biomarkers in Bryconops caudomaculatus (Osteichthyes: Characiformes) from a bauxite mining area in the Eastern Amazon.

The Eastern Amazon is rich in bauxite ore. The extraction and processing of bauxite lead to the mobilization of Aluminum (Al) and other metals in environmental. We evaluated the metals (Al, Mn, Ba, and Cr) concentration in tissue, water, and sediment associated with antioxidant and oxidative damage responses in Bryconops caudomaculatus. The samplings were done in two hydrological periods (post-rain and post-dry periods) and at three points, located at two rivers: one in the surroundings of the mining area (P1) and other inside the mining area, upstream (P2), and downstream (P3). Defense antiox…

Study on the bio-oil characterization and heavy metals distribution during the aqueous phase recycling in the hydrothermal liquefaction of As-enriched Pteris vittata L.

The hydrothermal liquefaction (HTL) of As enriched Pteris vittata L. (PVL, hyper-accumulator biomass) was performed with the recycled aqueou … .21-24.77 mg/mL) was dominant in the aqueous phases, resulting in the low pH (4.31-4.89). The heavy metals (Cu, Pb, Zn, Cd) mainly remained in bio-char whereas As was transferred to aqueous phase. Thus, HTL by aqueous phase recycling could be a promising way for PVL treatment to obtain high-quality bio-oil and arsenic recovery.
