The alkaloids lycorine, 1-O-acetyllycorine and ismine were isolated from the basic dichloromethane-soluble fraction of Crinum x powellii "Albu m" bulbs. A variety of methods can be used experimentally to model neural injury, and thus study the process that represents the major pathophysiology underlying glaucomatous optic neuropathy. These methods vary in difficulty, relevance to human glaucoma, and time course. There is no perfect model, partly because our understanding of the glaucomas is still incomplete. Nonetheless, research into the mechanisms underlying the optic neuropathy of glaucoma (as well as possible new treatments) is advancing rapidly because of the availability of a wide variety of models of neural injury.

Nonbeverage alcohol (NBA), or substitutes for traditional forms of beverage alcohol, includes such substances as mouthwash, aftershave lotion and alcohol-based fuels. Literature pertaining to the prevalence, clinical significance and toxicity of this practice is reviewed, using illustrative cases from a series of 48 NBA consumers. It was found that 10-15% of alcoholics hospitalized in detoxication units have consumed NBA; half of these patients are regular consumers. Addiction to NBA itself may occur. Swiss albino mice were injected postnatally with 0.05 ul of MAM-ac/g body weight. The mice were sacrificed at 0, 5,10, 15,20, and 25 days. Cerebellar, whole brain and body weights were determined. The treated mice generally showed smaller body weights reflecting the general toxicity of MAM-ac. There was no statistical difference between the whole brain weights of the two groups, when the loss of cerebellar weight was taken into account. A new method is described for sampling and sample application in the ultra-trace analysis of air by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry. In this new technique, a preseparation occurs on the gas chromatographic column during sample application, since the atmospheric constituents that are co-condensed during sample application we call this method "Druckaufgabe" (pressure application). The method is not only of theoretical value. It has a potentially wide application to occupational and environmental problems.
