Association of systemic inflammatory response index with bone mineral density, osteoporosis, and future fracture risk in elderly hypertensive patients.

OBJECTIVES: This study sought to investigate the relationship between the systemic inflammatory response index (SIRI) and bone mineral density (BMD), osteoporosis, and future fracture risk in elderly hypertensive patients. METHODS: Elderly hypertensive patients (age ≥60 years) who attended our hospital between January 2021 and December 2023 and completed BMD screening were included in the study. Analyses were performed with multivariate logistic and linear regression. RESULTS: The multiple linear regression indicated that SIRI levels were significantly negatively correlated with lumbar 1 BMD

Is Tibial Bone Mineral Density Related to Sex, Age, Preoperative Alignment, or Fixation Method in Primary Total Knee Arthroplasty?

BACKGROUND: Cementless total knee arthroplasty (TKA) has regained interest for its potential for long-term biologic fixation. The density of the bone is related to its ability to resist static and cyclic loading and can affect long-term implant fixation; however, little is known about the density distribution of periarticular bone in TKA patients. Thus, we sought to characterize the bone mineral density (BMD) of the proximal tibia in TKA patients. METHODS: We included 42 women and 50 men (mean age 63 years, range: 50 to 87; mean body mass index 31.6, range: 20.5 to 49.1) who underwent robotic

Soluble Klotho, a Potential Biomarker of Chronic Kidney Disease-Mineral Bone Disorders Involved in Healthy Ageing: Lights and Shadows.

Shortly after the discovery of Klotho, interest grew in its potential role in chronic kidney disease (CKD). There are three isoforms of the Klotho protein: αKlotho, βKlotho and γKlotho. This review will focus on αKlotho due to its relevance as a biomarker in CKD. αKlotho is synthesized mainly in the kidneys, but it can be released into the bloodstream and urine as soluble Klotho (sKlotho), which undertakes systemic actions, independently or in combination with FGF23. It is usually accepted that sKlotho levels are reduced early in CKD and that lower levels of sKlotho might be associated with th

Pre- and Postnatal Vitamin A Deficiency Impairs Motor Skills without a Consistent Effect on Trace Mineral Status in Young Mice.

Pregnant women and children are vulnerable to vitamin A deficiency (VAD), which is often compounded by concurrent deficiencies in other micr … ducted to evaluate motor coordination, grip strength, spatial cognition, and anxiety. Hepatic trace minerals were analyzed. A VD diet depleted hepatic retinoids and reduced plasma retinol across all ages and gestations. Retracted rear legs and abnormal gait were the most common clinical manifestations observed in VD offspring from both gestations at 9 week …

In-utero exposure to tenofovir-containing pre-exposure prophylaxis and bone mineral content in HIV-unexposed infants in South Africa.

INTRODUCTION: Tenofovir disoproxil fumarate (TDF) is a common drug of choice for pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) or as a combination HIV treatment for pregnant women. In-utero exposure to TDF was found to be associated with lower bone mineral content (BMC) in HIV-exposed uninfected neonates. Data for infants born to women taking TDF-PrEP are lacking. The CAP016 randomized control trial was conducted in South Africa between September 2017 and August 2021 and pregnant women either initiated TDF/FTC PrEP in pregnancy (Immediate PrEP arm-IP) or at cessation of breastfeeding (Deferred PrEP arm-DP).

Identification of Bone Mineral Density Deficit Using L1 Trabecular Attenuation by Opportunistic Multidetector CT Scan in Adult Patients.

BACKGROUND: Multidetector computer tomography (CT) has been used to diagnose pathologies such as osteoporosis via opportunistic screening, where the assessment of the bone structure and the measurement of bone mineral density (BMD) are of great relevance. PURPOSE: To construct reference BMD values based on the measurement of the attenuation of the L1 vertebral body by multidetector CT scan (in the soft tissue and bone windows) in adult patients and to establish normative ranges by sex and age of BMD values. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective cross-sectional study of 5080 patients who und

Adipose-Derived Stem Cells Enhance Graft Incorporation and Mineralization in a Murine Model of Irradiated Mandibular Nonvascularized Bone Grafting.

BACKGROUND: Nonvascularized bone grafting represents a practical method of mandibular reconstruction. However, the destructive effects of radiotherapy on native bone preclude the use of nonvascularized bone grafts in head and neck cancer patients. Adipose-derived stem cells have been shown to enhance bone healing and regeneration in numerous experimental models. The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of adipose-derived stem cells on nonvascularized bone graft incorporation in a murine model of irradiated mandibular reconstruction. METHODS: Thirty isogenic rats were randomly div

Amino acid and mineral digestibility, bone ash, and plasma inositol is increased by including microbial phytase in diets for growing pigs.

BACKGROUND: The effect of microbial phytase on amino acid and energy digestibility is not consistent in pigs, which may be related to the phytase dosage or the adaptation length to the diet. Therefore, an experiment was conducted to test the hypotheses that increasing dietary phytase after an 18-day adaptation period: 1) increases nutrient and energy digestibility; 2) increases plasma P, plasma inositol, and bone ash of young pigs; and 3) demonstrates that maximum phytate degradation requires more phytase than maximum P digestibility. RESULTS: Data indicated that increasing inclusion of phyta

Historical shifting in grain mineral density of landmark rice and wheat cultivars released over the past 50 years in India.

The 'Green Revolution (GR)' has been successful in meeting food sufficiency in India, but compromising its nutritional security. In a first, we report altered grain nutrients profile of modern-bred rice and wheat cultivars diminishing their mineral dietary significance to the Indian population. To substantiate, we evaluated grain nutrients profile of historical landmark high-yielding cultivars of rice and wheat released in succeeding decades since the GR and its impacts on mineral diet quality and human health, with a prediction for decades ahead. Analysis of grain nutrients profile shows a do

Bone Tissue Evaluation Indicates Abnormal Mineralization in Patients with Autoimmune Polyendocrine Syndrome Type I: Report on Three Cases.

Autoimmune polyendocrine syndrome type-1 (APS1) is characterized by autoimmune manifestations affecting different organs from early childhood on. Immunological abnormalities, the resulting endocrinopathies, and their treatments may compromise bone health. For the first time in APS1, we analyzed transiliac bone biopsy samples by bone histomorphometry and quantitative backscattered electron imaging in three adult patients (female P1, 38 years; male P2, 47 years; male P3, 25 years). All had biallelic mutations in the autoimmune regulator gene and in addition to endocrinopathies, also significant

Response of cows with osteomalacia grazing sub-tropical native pastures to phosphorus supplementation with loose mineral mix or feed blocks.

Osteomalacia outbreaks often occur in cattle grazing native pastures in regions with endemic phosphorous (P) deficiency. This study evaluated the responses of two groups of cows, initially with clinical signs of chronic P deficiency, to P supplements (100 g P/kg) offered ad libitum for 13 weeks as a loose mineral mix (LMM group) or the same mineral mix offered as blocks (BMM group). Half of the cows in each group were categorized as 'with' or 'without' severe osteopenia according to a test that depended on the resistance to penetration of a needle through the left lateral process of the L4-L5

Effects of Development on Bone Mineral Density and Mechanical Properties in the Aquatic Frog, Xenopus Laevis, and a Terrestrial Frog, Lithobates Catesbianus.

The limb bones of vertebrates have a critical role in supporting the weight of the body and transmitting forces that power locomotion. The loads that limb bones experience can vary in association with a range of factors, including locomotor environment or developmental stage. Limbed vertebrates that are habitually found in environments with low locomotor loads (e.g., water) might be predicted to also exhibit limb bones with less elevated mechanical properties, such as yield stiffness and yield stress. Frogs provide a distinctive case, in which these ideas can be tested as they experience chang

Enhancing Yield and Physiological Performance by Foliar Applications of Chemically Inert Mineral Particles in a Rainfed Vineyard under Mediterranean Conditions.

One of the biggest environmental challenges that most of the traditional and modern grape-growing areas are facing is the frequency, severity, and unpredictability of extreme weather events as a result of climate change. Sustainable tools such as chemically inert mineral particles could be a valid alternative for the promotion of environmentally-friendly viticultural techniques to enhance yield, improve physiological processes, and increase tolerance to biotic/abiotic stressors and grape quality. In regard to this concept, the effects of kaolin (KL) and zeolite (ZL) application was tested in t

Mineralizing Lenticulostriate Vasculopathy: An Emerging Risk Factor for Basal Ganglia Stroke After Minor Head Trauma in Young Children.

Mineralizing lenticulostriate vasculopathy is a well-recognized risk factor for basal ganglia stroke after minor head trauma in infants and young children; it is diagnosed on head computed tomography by the presence of basal ganglia calcification, seen as punctate hyperdensities on axial and linear hyperdensities on reconstructed coronal and sagittal images. In children with anterior fontanel window, its presence is suggested by branching hyperechogenic stripes in the basal ganglia region on cranial ultrasound. Brain magnetic resonance imaging, including susceptibility-weighted sequences and b
