See-Through Type 3D Head-Mounted Display-Based Surgical Microscope System for Microsurgery: A Feasibility Study.

BACKGROUND: The surgical microscope is used primarily for microsurgeries, which are more complicated than other surgical procedures and require delicate tasks for a long time. Therefore, during these surgical procedures, surgeons experience back and neck pain. To solve this problem, new technology, such as wearable displays, is required to help surgeons maintain comfortable postures and enjoy advanced functionality during microsurgery. OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to develop a surgical microscope system that would work with wearable devices. It would include a head-mounted displ

Incidental parathyroidectomy during thyroid surgery: an underappreciated complication of thyroidectomy.

The aim of this study was to investigate the incidence, risk factors, and clinical relevance of incidental parathyroidectomy during thyroid surgery. Prospective analysis of data in patients following thyroidectomy, specifically regarding the presence of parathyroid parenchyma in the thyroidectomy specimens, the underlying thyroid pathology, and the presence of postoperative hypocalcemia (biochemical/clinical). The clinical records of 158 patients who underwent thyroid surgery during a 2-year period were reviewed. Pathology reports were carefully reviewed for the nature of the underlying thyroi

Parotid gland malignant melanomas.

BACKGROUND: Malignant melanomas are relatively unusual tumors in the parotid gland. The majority of previously reported cases appear to represent metastatic lesions, often from cutaneous head and neck primaries. METHODS: Retrospective clinicopathologic review of 12 cases of malignant melanoma involving the parotid gland encountered between 1980 and October 1999 at a tertiary referral center. RESULTS: Patients consisted of 9 men and 3 women ranging in age from 30 to 84 years (median, 66 years). Eleven of 12 patients presented with a neck mass or nodule. In 9 of 12 patients, a cutaneous or con

Anatomical Reassessment of the Mandibular Septum: Relationship with The Marginal Mandibular Nerve and Deep Structures of Lower Face.

BACKGROUND: The mandibular septum is not a well-defined anatomical structure and mostly known as a ligamentous formation which separates the jowl and submandibular fat compartments. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to investigate the anatomical relationships between the mandibular septum(MS), the platysma-mandibular ligament (PML), together with the mandibular osteocutaneous ligament(MOCL), and the marginal mandibular nerve(MMN), with a focus on their potential relevance in facelift surgery. METHODS: The MS, PML, MOCL, and the MMN were identified in 14 cadavers(28 hemifaces). Layer-by-layer diss

Ruptured Vertebral Artery Aneurysm in a Patient with Loeys-Dietz Syndrome Type 4: A Sentinel Case Report.

Loeys-Dietz Syndrome (LDS) is a rare, autosomal dominant connective tissue disorder with an estimated prevalence of less than 1 in 100,000. LDS results from one of several genetic mutations altering the transforming growth factor β (TGF-β) signaling pathway. LDS portends a higher risk of vascular pathology including dissections and aneurysms throughout the arterial system. Though not commonly described, this higher incidence of vascular pathology extends to the cerebrovascular system with several case reports of cerebral aneurysms in patients afflicted with LDS. Herein, we describe t

Single-cell identification of an endothelial cell proximal SPP1+ macrophage population defines the metastatic vascular niche in lymph nodes.

Head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) is a highly prevalent malignancy with poor prognosis, largely driven by lymph node metastasis (LNM). Despite its clinical significance, the underlying mechanisms of LNM remain elusive. In this study, we used single-cell transcriptomic data to dissect the cellular and molecular interactions within metastatic lymph nodes (MET). Specifically, we analyzed Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA-seq) data from GSE195655, GSE140042, GSE227156, and GSE159929 (n = 41) to delineate cellular heterogeneity, intercellular communication networks, and functional enric

Evaluating the Accuracy of Ascending Ramus Geometry Using Cone-Beam Computed Tomography for Bilateral Sagittal Split Osteotomy's Horizontal Osteotomy.

INTRODUCTION: An accurate identification of anatomic structures is crucial for planning orthognathic osteotomies. Identification of anatomic landmarks on cephalograms was carried out; however, its application in 3D imaging remains limited. This study assesses the accuracy of using the geometry of ramus on cone-beam computed tomography (CBCT) to locate the horizontal medial osteotomy (MHO). MATERIAL AND METHODS: Forty rami from 14 fresh cadaveric head and necks were subjected to CBCT analysis before performing surgery. The MHO was identified in coronal CBCT views. Measurements were obtained in

Sublingual Dermoid Cyst Mimicking Ranula on Imaging: Surgical Treatment and Outcome in a Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV)-Positive Patient.

Dermoid cysts are rare congenital lesions that arise due to the entrapment of ectodermal and mesodermal elements during embryonic development. We report the case of a 21-year-old male with HIV who presented with a longstanding sublingual mass associated with difficulty in chewing and swallowing. Clinical examination revealed a firm, non-tender, and mobile sublingual mass, accompanied by concurrent submental swelling. Ultrasonography and computed tomography of the neck were suggestive of ranula. The patient underwent surgical excision through an extraoral submental approach under general anesth

Patterns of Cervical Metastases and Implications for Neck Management in Minor Salivary Gland Cancer Treatment.

OBJECTIVES: Minor salivary gland cancer (MiSGC) is a rare and heterogeneous disease, with different degrees of tumor aggressiveness. The scarce data in the literature show that the presence of lymph node metastases (LNMs) negatively impacts the prognosis. Furthermore, there is a lack of information about the patterns and extension of LNMs in MiSGC. Therefore, it is necessary to identify the clinical and pathological features associated with LNMs in MiSGC to guide the cervical dissection intent of those patients. This study's endpoints were the identification of clinicopathological features ass

[Comparative analysis of the groin and SCIP flap in reconstructive microsurgery of soft tissues of the maxillofacial area and oral cavity].

Most of the articles on the groin flap were published in the period from 1975 to 2010, from 2015 to 2022, the SCIP flap surpassed the groin flap in the number of publications. According to the results of a literature search in PubMed and RINC, 30 articles were found and selected, including 288 flaps from the iliac region. The length of the vascular pedicle, the diameter of the vessels, the complications, the prevalence of the flap in the reconstruction of the head and neck, the thickness and the size of the flap were evaluated. Both of these flaps have the same nutrition, but different levels

Origin variations and brachial plexus relationship of the dorsal scapular artery.

The dorsal scapular artery can either be a direct branch of the subclavian artery or a branch of the transverse cervical artery. Origin variation is related to its relationship with the brachial plexus. Anatomical dissection was performed on 79 sides of 41 formalin-embalmed cadavers in Taiwan. The origin of the dorsal scapular artery and the variations of its brachial plexus relationship were scrutinized and analyzed. Results showed that the dorsal scapular artery originated most frequently from the transverse cervical artery (48%), followed by the direct branch from the third part (25%) and t
