The Relationship between Air Pollution Exposure, Genetic Liability for Schizophrenia, and Brain Outcomes in the ABCD Study.

BACKGROUND AND HYPOTHESIS: Air pollution exposure has been associated with altered neurodevelopment and increased risk of schizophrenia. Ind … tudy. We used linear mixed-effects models to examine the association between air pollution (ambient particulate matter (PM₂.5), nitrogen dioxide (NO₂), and ozone (O₃)) and brain measures, and test whether genetic risk for schizophrenia moderated these effects. STUDY RESULTS: Higher PM₂.5 was associated with smaller right frontal pole surface area (p-FDR = 0.039). I …

Impact of air pollution on mental health in bangladesh: a comparison between Dhaka and Rajshahi.

This study examines how air pollution impacts mental health outcomes- such as depression, anxiety, and stress- in two Bangladeshi cities: Dhaka, a highly polluted urban center, and Rajshahi, a city with lower pollution levels. Using a cross-sectional approach, 2717 participants were assessed, including 1,431 from Dhaka and 1286 from Rajshahi. Data collection involved secondary sources and surveys evaluating environmental pollutants (PM2.5, PM10, NO2, CO, SO2, Ozone), self-reported exposure, and mental health status using the DASS-21 scale. The analysis used descriptive statistics, multiple lin

Differential DNA methylation in blood as potential mediator of the association between ambient PM2.5 and cerebrospinal fluid biomarkers of Alzheimer's disease among a cognitively normal population-based cohort.

Fine particulate matter (PM2.5) is a known risk factor for Alzheimer's disease (AD), with emerging evidence showing its effects detectable in the pre-clinical stage through cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) biomarkers of AD. While studies have linked PM2.5 exposure and AD to DNA methylation (DNAm) alterations, the role of DNAm as potential mediator in the association between PM2.5 and AD biomarkers in cognitively normal individuals remains largely unexplored, and formal mediation analyses addressing this question are scarce. Genome-wide DNAm profiles (Illumina EPIC BeadChips) in whole blood and CSF Aβ…

Personal household air pollution exposure and SARS-CoV-2 antibody responses among women and infants: an analysis within the HAPIN trial.

BACKGROUND: While extensive research has linked ambient air pollution to increased COVID-19 infection rates and severity, the role of household air pollution-a major public health exposure affecting nearly 3 billion people globally-remains understudied. Here, we evaluate associations between a clean cooking intervention, personal household air pollution exposure, and serologic evidence of prior SARS-CoV-2 infection using exploratory intention-to-treat and exposure-response analyses. METHODS: The Household Air Pollution Intervention Network (HAPIN) Trial randomized 3,200 households in Guatemal

Black carbon and psychosocial stress synergistically impair cardiovascular function via hippocampal glucocorticoid receptor methylation.

Black carbon (BC), a key toxic constituent of ambient PM2.5, and psychosocial stress, heightened by socioeconomic instability, both impair cardiovascular health. While epidemiological studies suggest that psychosocial stress could amplify the cardiovascular risks associated with air pollution, experimental evidence on the acute effects and mechanisms of joint exposure to BC and psychosocial stress is still lacking. In this study, a psychosocial stress model of male Sprague Dawley rats was exposed to different doses of BC by intratracheal instillation, followed by measurement of the hippocampal

Statistical approaches to analyse the combined effect of seven air pollutants and breast cancer risk: a case-control study nested in the French E3N-Generations cohort.

BACKGROUND: Air pollution is a complex mixture of closely correlated pollutants, making it challenging to assess both the overall mixture effect and to isolate the individual impact of each pollutant on breast cancer (BC) risk. This study assessed the effect of exposure to a mixture of seven correlated air pollutants (benzo[a]pyrene, cadmium, dioxins, polychlorinated biphenyl 153 (PCB153), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), particulate matter (PM2.5 and PM10)) on BC risk. METHODS: The study was based on a case-control study nested within the French E3N-Generations cohort (5222 incident BC cases/5222 mat…

Curcumin attenuates PM2.5-triggered pulmonary senescence via the mTOR/S6K1 signaling pathway.

Exposure to fine particulate matter (PM2.5) triggers pulmonary inflammation and oxidative stress, which can lead to cellular senescence and a decline in lung function. Curcumin, a yellow polyphenol derived from the rhizome of Curcuma longa, is traditionally used to treat respiratory ailments. However, its potential to counteract PM2.5-induced pulmonary senescence remains underexplored. In this study, we established a murine model of PM2.5-triggered lung senescence and used BEAS-2B cells to investigate the mechanisms of curcumin. We assessed senescence markers (p16, p21, and senescence-associat…

Environmental impact of open burning of polyester and cotton textile waste: a comparative analysis.

Open burning of waste (OBW), particularly textile waste, is a growing but under-researched global issue with critical environmental and publ … ting regional disparities in waste impacts. Open burning also releases hazardous pollutants such as particulate matter (PM2.5, PM10), polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), and toxic heavy metals (THMs), disproportionately affecting vulnerable populations. Although natural fibers like cotton emit less CO2, their combustion can still produce high levels of carbon m …

Short-term exposure to multiple air pollutants and synergistic effects on asthma hospitalization in children: A nationwide case-crossover study in China.

Air pollution has been recognized as a risk factor for asthma in children. However, evidence on multiple air pollutants on children's asthma hospitalization and the potential synergistic effects remains insufficient. This individual-level, time-stratified case-crossover study analyzed 5045 asthma hospitalizations from 153 hospitals across 20 Chinese provinces (2013-2021). Daily air pollution (particulate matter with a diameter ≤ 2.5μm (PM2.5) or ≤ 10μm (PM10), sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen dioxide (NO2), ozone (O3), and carbon monoxide (CO)) was estimated using satellite-based spatiotemporal …

The regulatory role of ACP5 in the diesel exhaust particle-induced AHR inflammatory signaling pathway in a human bronchial epithelial cell line.

Exposure to diesel exhaust particles (DEPs), which are major constituents of urban air pollution, is associated with adverse health outcomes. Previous studies have shown that DEPs enhance the expression of pro-inflammatory cytokines and immune responses. However, few studies have focused on genomic variants that regulate DEP-induced signaling. Here, we identify a frequently found genomic variant, ACP5, in allergic diseases, and establish an ACP5 knock-out (KO) human bronchial epithelial cell line (BEAS-2B) using CRISPR/Cas9 editing to mimic the ACP5 mutation. DEP-induced apoptosis and intracel
