The practice of well child care by pediatricians has been a subject of increasing controversy. Previous reports in the literature have indicated a low yield of significant organic or psychological findings. In the present study, three post-residency pediatricians, working in the general pediatric unit of an HMO setting at different times, evaluated the developmental and psychological problems of patients seen in consecutive well child examinations. A comparison of clofazimine and dapsone in the management of untreated lepromatous leprosy showed no significant differences between the two drugs in terms of morphological and bacterial indices. The incidence of erythema nodosum leprosum was similar in the two groups. Since dapsone is cheaper than clofazimine it remains the drug of choice for the routine management of untreated lepromatous leprosy.

A double-blind between-patient study was carried out comparing pentazocine with pethidine in 94 women in labour. Similar analgesic and sedative effects were obtained with the two drugs, and Apgar scores were similar for babies of both drug groups. Fewer emetic sequelae were reported after pentazocine injections, though there was no statistically significant difference between the two drug groups in incidence of other side-effects.

The patient was a 38-year-old male referred to physical therapy with complaints of right lower extremity radicular pain and left lower extremity weakness. Patients with hypertonic pelvic floor disorders can present with pelvic pain or dysfunction. Each of the various syndromes will be discussed including elimination disorders, bladder pain syndrome/interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC), vulvodynia, vaginismus, and chronic pelvic pain. The symptoms and objective findings on physical examination and various diagnostic studies will be reviewed. Therapeutic options including physical therapy, pharmacologic management, and trigger point injections, as well as botulinum toxin injections will be reviewed in detail.

Breast cancer is the most common malignancy in North American women. The incidence rate is increasing by about 2% annually, while the mortality rate has remained stable for 50 years. Screening by physical examination and mammography can decrease the mortality rate in women over 50 by 30%. The screening process is rewarding, but meticulous attention to detail is required in both the physical and mammographic assessment in order to define significant abnormalities.

Three cases of bladder dysfunction as the first indication of tumors involving the spinal cord and sacral nerve roots are presented. The correct diagnosis was delayed in each instance. The relationship of such tumors to bladder dysfunction is discussed and the need for careful history and physical examination is stressed. It is emphasized that neurologic disease may present with urinary dysfunction. Neurological symptoms, physical findings and radiographic abnormalities of the spine should be noted.
