Subendometrial platelet-rich plasma injection for refractory thin endometrium: a prospective pilot study.

To evaluate the effectiveness of subendometrial autologous platelet-rich plasma (PRP) injections in improving endometrial thickness (EMT) and pregnancy outcomes in women with refractory thin endometrium. This prospective, single-arm, self-controlled trial was conducted at Nanjing Drum Tower Hospital between October 2023 and October 2024. A total of 21 women with refractory thin endometrium (EMT < 7 mm), including those with a history of multiple failed treatments (e.g., high-dose oestrogen, surgical adhesiolysis), were treated with subendometrial PRP injections. EMT and reproductive outcomes w

Pilot Study: Hyaluronic Acid Fillers in the Management of Scars After Skin Cancer Surgery.

BACKGROUND: Scarring after skin cancer surgery, particularly facial surgery, poses significant aesthetic and psychological concerns for patients. Surgical revision, although effective, can be associated with increased morbidity and recovery time. Hyaluronic acid (HA) fillers offer a potential nonsurgical alternative for scar revision, but their use in post-skin cancer scar revision is not well documented. This retrospective pilot study aimed to evaluate the safety, effectiveness, and patient satisfaction of HA fillers for the revision of scars following skin cancer surgery. METHODS: A retrosp

Evaluation of lighted catheter phototherapy in endoscopic treatment of urethral strictures: a rabbit pilot study.

PURPOSE: To improve the success of minimally invasive urethral stricture treatments with red and near-infrared (NIR) light emitted via catheters after direct vision internal urethrotomy (DVIU). We hypothesized that catheter-emitted light therapy would improve success rate and histologic wound characteristics. METHODS: Twenty-four male New Zealand rabbits underwent stricture induction by electroresection and then were randomized into three groups: red light catheter (650 nm wavelength), NIR light (810 nm wavelength), or control (no light). After DVIU, a catheter was inserted for 7 days providi

A pilot study revealed the gut microbiota based on 16S rRNA metagenomics in gestational diabetes.

OBJECTIVE: Microbiome being a potential biomarker holds the future hope for insight into GD pathogenesis, diagnosis and cure. Many factors such as diet, lifestyle, environment, host genetics shape the diversity and composition of human microbiome. Although recent studies have indicated that gut microbiome dysbiosis was significantly associated with the onset of gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM). Information on the alteration of gut microbiota composition in Pakistani women is limited. Therefore, present study was designed to elucidate gut microbiota taxonomic composition and relative abundan

Development and Evaluation of an AI Avatar Educational Tool for Depression and Anxiety: A Qualitative Pilot Study.

BACKGROUND: Depression and anxiety affect nearly 1 in 4 Canadians. Traditional patient education materials, such as handouts, are often lengthy and difficult to understand, leading to disengagement. Human-like artificial intelligence (AI) avatars offer a novel way to supplement education by delivering consistent, engaging video content that mimics human interaction and is easily accessible online. OBJECTIVE: This pilot study aimed to develop a human-like, non-generative AI avatar educational video to support education on antidepressants for patients living with depression and anxiety. The sec

A pilot study investigating the comparison of immunological responses to two immunosuppressive regimens in a porcine model.

Effective immunosuppression in large animal models is essential for successful preclinical assessment of cell-based therapies in the allo- or xeno-transplantation setting. Pigs, due to their physiological and immunological similarity to humans, are widely used in translational research. However, direct, longitudinal comparisons of immunosuppressive strategies in swine are scarce, limiting the development of safe and reliable protocols. To address this gap, we performed a head-to-head comparison of two immunosuppressive regimens in pigs (n = 8; 4 animals per group) to identify a protocol that a

Preoperative Vaginal Microbiota and Risk of Complications After Transobturator Tape Surgery: A Pilot Study.

Background: The vaginal microbiota plays a crucial role in maintaining urogenital health, and its disruption may contribute to adverse surgical outcomes. Transobturator tape (TOT) procedures are widely used in the treatment of stress urinary incontinence (SUI), yet factors influencing postoperative complications remain incompletely understood. This study aimed to evaluate the association between preoperative vaginal microbiota and postoperative complications following TOT surgery. Methods: This pilot observational study included 24 women diagnosed with SUI who underwent TOT surgery between Feb

A Pilot Study of the Wave Technique: A Safer, More Comfortable Approach to Pediatric Cast Removal.

BACKGROUND: Cast removal is a routine yet potentially distressing procedure in pediatric orthopaedic care. Conventional techniques using oscillating saws can generate heat, vibration, and noise, often causing pain and anxiety in children. We herein propose a novel Wave Technique designed to minimize thermal buildup and mechanical irritation associated with cast saw use, thereby reducing procedural distress in pediatric patients. METHODS: This single-center, retrospective comparative study included 52 pediatric patients who underwent cast removal following elective orthopaedic surgery between

Immersive VoiceSpace: Development and Pilot Testing of a Virtual Reality System for Contextualized Vocal Training.

PURPOSE: Behavioral voice therapy is effective for many voice disorders, yet gains achieved in the clinic often fail to transfer reliably to everyday communication. Motor learning frameworks suggest that transfer improves when practice preserves the sensory and contextual demands of the target environment. Immersive virtual reality (IVR) may help address this gap by embedding voice tasks within ecologically relevant visual-spatial contexts. The purpose of the present study was to evaluate the feasibility of a prototype IVR platform, Immersive VoiceSpace (IVS), and to examine vocal behavior acr

GAIN: a multicenter pilot protocol for early initiation of enteral feeds in neonates with simple gastroschisis.

BACKGROUND: Gastroschisis is a congenital abdominal wall defect characterized by severe gut dysmotility. These neonates often face lengthy hospital stays, prolonged parenteral nutrition dependence, and complications such as growth faltering, sepsis, and intestinal failure. Feeding practices for neonates with gastroschisis vary and emphasize extended bowel rest and delayed feeding initiation. Usual practices in determining timing to start feeds include awaiting return of bowel function which typically consists of low Replogle output volume, color changing from bilious to clear and/or passing st

Lateral Column Lengthening Effect on Total Subtalar Joint Range of Motion: A Pilot Study.

Lateral column lengthening (LCL) calcaneal osteotomy is a well-established surgical procedure used in flexible flatfoot reconstructive surgery. The effects of LCL on subtalar joint (STJ) range of motion (ROM) have not been thoroughly explored in the literature. Our study aimed to objectively measure the average decrease in the total ROM of the STJ following LCL. A retrospective cohort study was conducted on 15 patients (20 feet) who underwent LCL for various indications. Data for STJ ROM was collected from both the preoperative and postoperative periods. Mean follow-up for the cohort was 12 we

Atopic outcomes in children with Down syndrome: a pilot sibling-matched case-control study.

INTRODUCTION: Atopic conditions such as wheezing, asthma, allergic rhinitis, and eczema are frequently reported in children with Down syndrome. Many previous studies have used unpaired analyses that do not account for shared familial and environmental factors. Sibling-matched designs offer a robust approach for addressing these limitations but require appropriate paired statistical methods. This study aimed to assess the feasibility of a sibling-matched design for studying atopic outcomes in children with Down syndrome and to propose an appropriate methodological and statistical framework for
