Nocturnal blood pressure reduction: effect on retrobulbar hemodynamics in glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: Several studies suggest that nocturnal reductions in systemic blood pressure (BP) may be associated with onset or progression of … iary arteries, and with transcranial Doppler (TCD) in the middle cerebral artery. BP, corrected for posture, was monitored throughout the night. RESULTS: Maximal posture-corrected nocturnal BP reductions were similar in patients and controls. The reductions were about 10% for each group ( P<0.01). At baseline, patients had lower peak systolic and end-dia …

Botulinum toxin in the treatment of writer's cramp.

BACKGROUND: Writer's cramp is a task specific focal dystonia. The treatment of writer's cramp is very disappointing. AIM: Study the effect of botulinum toxin (BTX) in the treatment of writer's cramp. MATERIAL AND METHODS: Sixteen patients of writer's cramp (15 men, 1 woman) with mean age of 35.75 years and mean duration of symptoms for 3.64 years received 22 treatment sessions of botulinum toxin-A (BTX). All patients were evaluated before, 3 and 12 weeks after BTX therapy on a rating scale from 0-4 for ease of writing, abnormal posture and pain (0 = normal, 4 = very severe disability). The s…

Static and dynamic balance function in spasmodic torticollis.

The consequences of abnormal head posture on static and dynamic balance skill were studied in a group of 10 patients with idiopathic spasmodic torticollis (ST). In static conditions, body sway was assessed using a conventional force platform with eyes open and with eyes closed. Standardized dynamic balance conditions were produced using a rocking platform; lateral and anteroposterior dynamic balance skills were assessed by measuring linear displacement both of the body base and of the head. Dynamic tests were repeated 6 weeks after botulinum toxin treatment in all patients. Patients' results w…

Agreement between a frequency-weighted filter for continuous biomechanical measurements of repetitive wrist flexion against a load and published psychophysical data.

A previous pilot study demonstrated that a force and frequency-weighted filter network could be developed for processing continuous biomechanical measures of repetitive wrist motions and exertions. The current study achieves the objective by modelling subjective discomfort for repetitive wrist flexion using controlled posture, pace and force. A three-level fractional factorial experiment was conducted involving repetitive wrist flexion (2 s/motion, 6 s/motion, 10 s/motion) from a neutral posture to a given angle (10 degrees, 28 degrees, 45 degrees) against a controlled resistance (5 N, 25 N, 5…

A cephalometric and electromyographic study of upper airway structures in the upright and supine positions.

Machine learning classification of early-stage Parkinson's disease using sit-to-walk biomechanical features.

Early-stage Parkinson’s disease (PD) impairs motor control during complex tasks requiring coordinated postural adjustment and locomotion. The sit-to-walk (STW) task integrates standing and gait initiation (GI), placing balance demands on people with PD; however, its potential for early PD detection remains underexplored. We aimed to identify STW-related biomechanical biomarkers of early-stage PD and evaluate the performance of a machine-learning-based classification model. We enrolled 106 participants (63 with early-stage PD and 43 age-matched healthy controls). Three-dimensional motion captur

Emotion recognition from faces and bodies in Parkinson's disease and its relationship to MRI-based brain volumetry.

Although Parkinson's disease (PD) is primarily defined by motor symptoms, non-motor manifestations-including deficits in social cognition-are increasingly recognized for their impact on daily functioning. Emotion recognition impairment is one such deficit, but prior research has mainly focused on facial expressions, neglecting other socially relevant cues such as body postures. This study examined recognition of emotions from both faces and bodies and their cognitive and neuroanatomical correlates in non-demented patients with PD. We enrolled 25 individuals with mild to moderate PD and 24 age-…

The effect of optical illusions on the vestibular system in individuals with motion sickness: An analysis of sensory reweighting.

Exposure to optical illusions during postural control activates the sensory reweighting system. However, the impact of optical illusions on the vestibular system in individuals with motion sickness (MS) remains unclear. This study aims to investigate the effects of optical illusions on the vestibular system in individuals with MS. The study included 33 individuals with MS (MS group) and 34 individuals without MS (control group). The severity of MS was assessed using the Motion Sickness Susceptibility Questionnaire. All participants underwent cervical vestibular evoked myogenic potentials (cVEM

METHODOLOGY: The present study has a repeated measures design that included 10 endodontic postgraduate students. Data on musculoskeletal symptoms were collected using a modified Standardized Musculoskeletal Symptom Perception Questionnaire. Physical and Physiological Consequences of Babywearing on the Babywearer: A Systematic Review.

Background/Objectives: Babywearing is a carrying system that ensures consistent contact and proper posture between the baby and carrying adult, in which there is no age or weight limit, and it is rarely inadvisable. Although babywearing has been growing in popularity and acclaim due to the comfort and emotional closeness between the carrier and baby, there are a number of physical and physiological consequences for the adult carrier when using an ergonomic babywearing device, such as muscular, postural, cardiorespiratory, and energy expenditure, and the perception of effort and pain. The objec…

Physiological changes that occur in the mother's body during pregnancy have been considered as a possible substrate for developing vestibular disorders. Comparison of Lower Limb Mass, Thigh Circumference, and Balance Ability after Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction and in Control Participants.

Injury of the anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) in the knee is common, with up to 250,000 cases annually in the United States. Such injuries can lead to muscle atrophy, impaired balance, and limited movement. This study aimed to compare the lower limbs of individuals with ACL reconstruction to a Control group. We hypothesized that ACL participants would exhibit greater asymmetry between lower limbs as compared to Controls. Data were collected from 12 ACL participants and 30 Control participants. Measurements included lower limb muscle mass assessed using bioelectrical impedance, thigh circumfer

The Association between Pelvic Asymmetry and Lateral Abdominal Muscle Activity in a Healthy Population.

The human pelvis is subjected to forces generated by abdominal muscles. Pelvic asymmetry (PA) might therefore be related to the asymmetrical postural activity of the lateral abdominal muscles (LAMs: transversus abdominis (TrA); internal oblique (IO); external oblique (EO)). The main aim of this study was to evaluate the potential relationship between PA, expressed by the asymmetry index in the frontal (PAIf) and sagittal (PAIs) planes and LAM postural activity as described by the tissue deformation index (TDI). A group of 126 healthy volunteers (59 females) was involved. Positions of the anato

Stepping into emotions: investigating the effect of angry and fearful faces on forward stepping and quiet stance.

INTRODUCTION: Facial expressions conveying an emotion may affect social interactions, such as approach- or avoidance-related behaviors. A specific facial feature is the gaze direction. An emotional facial expression such as anger will elicit distinct behavioral tendencies, depending on whether the angry gaze is directed toward the onlooker, or in a different direction. We tested whether facial expressions of anger and fear, combined with direct or averted gaze, elicit approach- or avoidance tendencies, using a go/no-go variant of the whole-body stepping task. METHOD: Healthy adults stood on a
