Evaluation of a novel multi-purpose ophthalmic block simulator amongst ophthalmology trainees.

Training to perform ophthalmic blocks is often done on actual patients by trial and error. Higher complication rates and poor patient experience occur from suboptimal blocks. We assess the efficacy of a novel ophthalmic block simulator via a pilot study. The production process involved 3D-printing and improvisation with readily available materials that provided excellent reproducibility of a real-life experience. A prospective pilot study on ophthalmology trainees in a single centre via a 3-pronged approach before and after a supervised training workshop on the simulator was performed. Outcome…

Helical morphology-inspired bistable gripper for UAV upward perching and grasping in field environment.

There is a growing interest in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) being able to perch onto objects, which expands their scope of applications. Many perching strategies are inspired by natural organisms, including birds, insects, and helical morphologies such as tendrils and tails. Inspired by these helical structures, a bistable hybrid gripper is developed that enables a quadcopter to perch on branches and perform aerial grasping. The gripper integrates a bistable steel shell (BSS) as the stiff element, analogous to skeletal support, with a soft 3D-printed helical exoskeleton, analogous to muscul

A Systematic Review of Modeling Platforms for Atrioventricular Valves in Atrioventricular Septal Defects.

Given the high rate of re-intervention in patients with atrioventricular septal defects (AVSD), there is a continuing need to accurately model the complex valve anatomy and surgical repair strategies. This systematic review examined the current scientific landscape for modeling platforms designed to study abnormal congenital heart valves that are used or could be used for AVSD investigation. Of 1,050 sources screened, 47 were included (14 in silico; 26 in vitro; 7 in vivo). In silico models studying valve pathologies have advanced in recent years, but few targeted AVSD valves. In vitro platfor

Using augmented reality to enhance wax up training in dental education a feasibility study.

Wax-up practice is an integral part of dental education, teaching students the morphology of teeth and correct handling of waxing tools. Currently wax-ups need to be presented and evaluated by a dentist involved in dental education. The aim of this study was the development of a smartphone application utilizing augmented reality to improve self-evaluation and learning effects of beginners doing wax-up practice. The application was developed for devices running the iOS operating-system using the Swift language. The Swift-libraries UIKit, ArKit and SceneKit were used. The application was test-ru

Development of a quantitatively controlled expirated bloodstain generation system using an anatomically-informed oral model.

Expirated bloodstains are generated when blood is forcibly expelled from the mouth or upper airway due to air pressure. These patterns often contain biological constituents such as mucus and salivary enzymes, as well as distinctive morphological elements like bubble rings or beaded stains. However, their overall appearance can closely resemble that of impact or cast-off stains, which may lead to potential misinterpretation during forensic analysis. Conventional methods for reproducing expirated stains often rely on human subjects forcibly projecting blood or artificial substitutes, which pose

Bionic menisci with integrated material-structure-functionality for gouty arthritis.

Gouty arthritis may cause meniscal damage, necessitating surgery for meniscus replacement. However, the meniscus remains at risk of urate crystal accumulation and oxidative stress post-surgery. To tackle this challenge, we developed tri-level bionic menisci that achieve an integrated material-structure-functionality design. Its gradient network mimics natural structures, providing biomechanical adaptation and functioning as a porous catalyst carrier to load multifunctional nanozymes to eliminate excess uric acid and oxyradicals. Specifically, we utilized 3D printing to incorporate Pt-CeO2 nano…

Artificial valves to replace the Ureterovesical Junctions: a novel approach to prevent urinary backflow.

Vesicoureteral reflux is a common complication following radical cystectomy, resulting from the removal of the ureterovesical junctions (UVJ). Current bladder reconstruction methods do not address this issue, leading to potential renal complications. In this study, we designed, fabricated, and tested two passive ureteral valve designs - the Butterfly and Cap valves - to ensure unidirectional urine flow from the kidneys to the bladder when inserted into the ureters of an artificial bladder (AB). Finite Element Method simulations guided the optimization of valves. The prototypes were 3D-printed

Multicellular 3D bioprinted human gallbladder carcinoma forin vitromimicry of tumor microenvironment and intratumoral heterogeneity.

Gallbladder carcinoma (GBC) is a malignant hepatobiliary cancer characterized by an intricate tumor microenvironments (TME) and heterogeneity. The traditional GBC 2D culture models cannot faithfully recapitulate the characteristics of the TME. Three-dimensional (3D) bioprinting enables the establishment of high-throughput and high-fidelity multicellular GBC models. In this study, we designed a concentric cylindrical tetra-culture model to reconstitute the spatial distribution of cells in tumor tissue, with the inner portion containing GBC cells, and the outer ring containing a mixture of endot…

An Imaging-Compatible Oral Retractor System for Transoral Robotic Surgery.

This study aimed to develop and validate a Computed Tomography (CT)/Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)-compatible polymer oral retractor system to enable intraoperative image guidance for transoral robotic surgery (TORS). The retractor was designed based on standard-of-care metallic retractors and 3D (three-dimensional) printed with carbon fiber composite and nylon. The system was comprehensively evaluated in bench-top and cadaveric experiments in terms of its ability to enable intraoperative CT/MR images during TORS, functionality including surgical exposure and working volume, usability, compa

Digitally driven surgical guide planning.

To investigate the role of a fully digital process in the surgical treatment of mandibular fractures in children. We analyzed a complete dataset from 22 children with mandibular fractures treated with digital surgical assistance. The patient's treatment process included preoperative thin layer CT (Computed Tomography) scanning, computer-aided design (3D reconstruction, virtual reduction, and internal fixation device determination and shaping), and 3D printing (jaw model, bite plate). We used occlusal and shaping plates during surgery to assist in fracture reduction and fixation. During the fol…

Comparison of composite resins containing UV light-sensitive chitosan derivatives in stereolithography (SLA)-3D printers.

This study produced composite resins by combining acrylate, chitosan (CH), carboxymethyl chitosan (CMCH), hydroxypropyl chitosan (HPCH), and hydroxyethyl chitosan (HECH) to create materials suitable for use in 3D stereolithography (SLA) printers. Tripropylene glycol diacrylate (TPGDA), urethane acrylate (UA), and photoinitiator (Diphenyl (2, 4, 6-trimethylbenzoyl) phosphine oxide (TPO)) were mixed. CH and its derivatives were added separately to the resin to obtain composite resins. The mechanical test results are clear; the optimum TPGDA: UA ratio was 1:1, the cure time was 60 s, and the TPO
