Provincial Correctional Service Workers: The Prevalence of Mental Disorders.

Correctional service employees in Ontario, Canada (n = 1487) began an online survey available from 2017 to 2018 designed to assess the prevalence and correlates of mental health challenges. Participants who provided data for the current study (n = 1032) included provincial staff working in institutional wellness (e.g., nurses) (n = 71), training (e.g., program officers) (n = 26), governance (e.g., wardens) (n = 82), correctional officers (n = 553), administration (e.g., record keeping) (n = 25), and probation officers (n = 144). Correctional officers, workers in institutional administration an

Rhabdomyolysis associated acute renal failure - Report of two fatal cases and a brief review of literature.

BACKGROUND: Rhabdomyolysis is a potentially fatal condition which occurs due to skeletal muscle injury and classically presents with myalgia and red-brown coloured urine. Presence of excess myoglobin in the glomerular filtrate forms myoglobin casts which causes severe obstruction and necrosis of the tubules leading to acute renal failure. METHODS: We report two fatal cases of rhabdomyolysis associated acute renal failure. The first victim died in police custody and the second victim died due to severe physical exertion. RESULTS: In both the cases, creatine kinase levels were elevated and myo

The Eye Color Experiment: From Berlin to Auschwitz and Back.

BACKGROUND: In an effort to alter eye color during World War II, devout Nazi researcher Karin Magnussen had adrenaline eye drops administered to inmates at the concentration camp Auschwitz-Birkenau. A Sinti family, with a high prevalence of heterochromia iridis, was forced to participate in this study. Members of this family, as well as other victims, were later killed and had their eyes enucleated and sent to Magnussen for examination. Magnussen articulated the findings of these events in a manuscript that has never been published. The author is the first ophthalmologist to review this manusc

Three postmortem case reports of the excited delirium syndrome - A short comparison.

PURPOSE: The purpose of the work is to show and compare three reported cases of Excited Delirium Syndrome, which happened in Warsaw, Poland, from 2013 to 2017. We compared the results of three autopsy and toxicological findings of unexpectedly deceased males and the circumstances of their death, based on the police records. RESULTS: There were no significant findings of chronic diseases or multiple traumas leading us to the clear explanation of cause of death. We noted a rapid cardiopulmonary failure accompanied by drug abuse in all three cases, that happened following a stressful stimulus, e

Acute Disseminated Encephalomyelitis in an Incarcerated Adolescent Presents as Acute Psychosis: Case Report and Literature Review.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to describe a case of an incarcerated adolescent with acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM) presenting as acute psychosis. METHODS: This was a retrospective case report followed with chart and literature review. MAIN FINDINGS: An adolescent with ADEM presented with drastic behavior and personality changes that led to her incarceration for serious charges. Acute disseminated encephalomyelitis leads to neuropsychiatric effects and can be seen with magnetic resonance imaging as a large mass effect that may result in a poor prognosis. This adolescent made a full recover

Transforming responses: Exploring the treatment of substance-using African American women.

This article explores how intrapersonal and structural oppression may impact treatment and the recovery process of 23 self-identified African American women with histories of incarceration and substance use. Using a critical consciousness (CC) framework and content-based thematic analysis, researchers systematically coded and extracted themes and patterns from focus group data to evaluate how marginalizing processes-such as race-based discrimination-impact treatment, the therapeutic relationship, and service provision. Results indicate that participants' health and treatment were negatively im

Evidence of infectious disease, trauma, disability and deficiency in skeletons from the 19th/20th century correctional facility and asylum «Realta» in Cazis, Switzerland.

As a reaction to widespread poverty, a system of coercive welfare developed in Switzerland during the 19th century. Poverty was often thought to result from an individual's misconduct rather than from structural, economic or political circumstances. People whose lifestyle deviated from the desired norm or who were unable to make a living for themselves were subjected to so-called administrative detention at institutions such as workhouses and poorhouses. The excavation of the cemetery of the correctional facility/workhouse and asylum «Realta» in Cazis offered the opportunity to gain insight in

Taking Legal Histories in Psychiatric Assessments.

People with mental illness are often disproportionately affected by the U.S. justice system, yet psychiatrists and other mental health professionals may avoid or feel uncomfortable talking with patients about legal history. This column examines why legal history is relevant to psychiatric assessments and provides guidance for talking with patients about these issues. Key aspects of taking a legal history are reviewed, including suggested questions, the role of collateral information, and considerations for medicolegal documentation. Developing skills in taking patients' legal histories may equ

Maternal Incarceration, Children's Psychological Adjustment, and the Mediating Role of Emotion Regulation.

Children who live in the context of maternal incarceration (MI) are exposed to both general environmental risk and incarceration-specific risk increasing the probability of their developing externalizing and internalizing behaviors problems. Little research has examined the socio-emotional mechanisms that account for the psychological effects of MI. This research examined children's anger and sadness regulation as mediators between environmental and incarceration-specific risk and psychological functioning. Participants were 117 children (60% Black; 52% boys; M age = 9.85 years, SD = 1.65 year

The Interaction of Sexual Validation, Criminal Justice Involvement, and Sexually Transmitted Infection Risk Among Adolescent and Young Adult Males.

BACKGROUND: Young men who have been involved with the criminal justice system are more likely to have concurrent sexual partners, a key driver of sexually transmitted infections. The value men place on having sexual relationships to validate themselves may play an important role in understanding this association. METHODS: Data were from a household survey. Young men (N = 132), aged 16 to 24 years, self-reported whether they ever spent time in jail or juvenile detention and if they had sexual partnerships that overlapped in time. A novel scale, "Validation through Sex and Sexual Relationships"

A record linkage study on former police detainees who died in Amsterdam between 2013 and 2015.

BACKGROUND: Police detainees are known to have inferior health. This study identifies the number of former police detainees who received medical care among deaths examined by forensic physicians and presents their death characteristics. METHODS: We included all deaths that were examined by forensic physicians of the Public Health Service Amsterdam from 2013 to 2015. Patient files of subjects were scanned for the presence of a prior medical consultation in the police cell and death characteristics were collected from post-mortem examination reports. We performed statistical analyses to discove

Detained and Distressed: Persistent Distressing Symptoms in a Population of Older Jail Inmates.

Distressing symptoms are associated with poor function, acute care use, and mortality in older adults. The number of older jail inmates is increasing rapidly, prompting calls to develop systems of care to meet their healthcare needs, yet little is known about multidimensional symptom burden in this population. This cross-sectional study describes the prevalence and factors associated with distressing symptoms and the overlap between different forms of symptom distress in 125 older jail inmates in an urban county jail. Physical distress was assessed using the Memorial Symptom Assessment Scale.

Elderly Sexual Offenders.

With the ever-aging population, the number of elderly sexual offenders are also on the rise. The courts and correctional system are increasingly faced with older individuals who have offended sexually. Previously, these older offenders were thought to be similar to younger sexual offenders. However, closer analysis suggests that many of these individuals pose a much lower risk to recidivate than the risk to recidivate of their younger counterparts. Still, an individualized approach to manage the risk of older offenders is required, as some may have particular risk factors relevant for their tr

Gastrointestinal Illness Associated with Rancid Tortilla Chips at a Correctional Facility - Wyoming, 2015.

On October 12, 2015, a county health department notified the Wyoming Department of Health of an outbreak of gastrointestinal illness among residents and staff members at a local correctional facility. The majority of ill persons reported onset of symptoms within 1-3 hours after eating lunch served at the facility cafeteria at noon on October 11. Residents and staff members reported that tortilla chips served at the lunch tasted and smelled like chemicals. The Wyoming Department of Health and county health department personnel conducted case-control studies to identify the outbreak source. Cons

"It is a thin line to walk on": challenges of staff working at Swedish immigration detention centres.

Detention of irregular migrants awaiting deportation is widely practiced in many countries and has been shown to have profound negative impact on health and well-being of detainees. Detention staff, an integral part of the detention environment, affect and are affected by detainees' health and well-being. The objective of the study was to explore experiences of staff working at Swedish immigration detention centres. Fifteen semi-structured interviews were conducted with staff in three Swedish detention centres and were analysed using thematic analysis. The results indicate that the main challe

When Caring for Perpetrators Becomes a Sentence: Recognizing Vicarious Trauma.

Correctional health nurses are not exempt from vicarious traumatization, but this concept has yet to be explored. Correctional health nurses practice in environments that come with significant risk for traumatic exposure from inmates and coworkers. The Professional Quality of Life Scale was used as a proxy to measure vicarious trauma. Surveys were mailed to 2,000 correctional health nurses that were on the mailing list of the National Commission on Correctional Health Care, with a total response rate of 10.1%. Respondents were asked to complete the Professional Quality of Life Scale and a shor

Traumatic experiences and re-victimization of female inmates undergoing treatment for substance abuse.

BACKGROUND: In the past decade, several studies have focused on the treatment needs of female inmates with substance abuse problems. An important finding has been that these women are more likely to report histories of sexual, physical, and emotional abuse-at rates varying from 77% to 90%. The trauma resulting from this kind of abuse is a key contributing factor in behavioral problems in adolescence and subsequent delinquency, substance abuse, and criminality in adulthood. METHODS: This was a retrospective clinical study. A convenience sample of 112 women who entered the program's treatment g

Predictors of detention among juveniles referred for a court clinic forensic evaluation.

Increased American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) embryo and neonatal mortality has been reported from several northcentral Florida lakes contaminated with old-use organochlorine pesticides (OCPs). However, a clear relationship among these contaminants and egg viability has not been established, suggesting the involvement of additional factors in these mortalities. Thus, the main objective of this study was to determine the ultimate cause of mortality of American alligator late-stage embryos and hatchlings through the conduction of detailed pathological examinations, and to evaluate be
