Adaptive behavior in 10-11 year old children born preterm with a very low birth weight (VLBW).

AIMS: The aims were to compare adaptive behavior in 10-11 year old VLBW children with and without cerebral palsy (CP) to term-born children, and examine its relationship with neonatal factors and infant motor repertoire in VLBW children without CP. METHODS: Twenty-eight VLBW children without CP, 10 VLBW children with CP and 31 term-born control children were examined at 10-11 years using the parent-reported Vineland Adaptive Behavior Scales-II. The Adaptive Behavior Composite Score, based on communication, daily living skills and socialization, was adjusted for sex, socioeconomic status (SES)

From risky behavior to health risk: continuity across two generations.

The purpose of this study was to determine the impact of childhood aggression and social withdrawal on adolescent health risk behaviors and adult health outcomes, and to examine the transfer of health risk to preschool offspring. This was a prospective, longitudinal, and intergenerational study of 114 mothers from disadvantaged neighborhoods, who were identified in childhood as being highly aggressive and/or withdrawn or with low scores on these 2 behavioral risk dimensions, and their preschool offspring aged 1 to 6 years old. The health histories of mothers (adolescent health risk behavior, h

Behavioral and cognitive measurements predict scores on the MAST: a 3-year prospective study.

This experiment examined the ability of neuropsychological and behavioral tests of anterior brain functioning to predict changes in alcohol-related behaviors 3 years after the initial evaluation. One hundred four young adult subjects, sixty-six of whom had a positive family history of alcoholism, filled out the Michigan Alcoholism Screening Test (MAST), self-rated the frequency with which they consumed alcohol, and completed a retrospective test of childhood hyperactivity/impulsivity/conduct problems (Wender Behavioral Checklist). Eighty-three of the subjects also completed a neuropsychologica

Neurodevelopmental Outcomes in Early Childhood.

Technological advances in neonatal-perinatal medicine have led to a steady increase in the survival of preterm infants. Although the increase in survival is a remarkable success, children born preterm remain at high risk for brain injury and long-term neurodevelopmental deficits. Children born preterm may have abnormal muscle tone or movements, cognitive deficits, language impairments, and behavioral problems. This article reviews neurodevelopmental outcomes and factors that influence outcomes in preterm children during early childhood.

The Impact of Prematurity on Social and Emotional Development.

Behavioral and emotional problems are one of the most frequent chronic conditions diagnosed among children born prematurely. The high prevalence of these pathologies is a matter of concern because of their impact on family life, school performance, and social interaction, but also because of current limitations in early detection and access to treatment. This is a review of the various mechanisms by which premature birth affects social and emotional development, and a discussion about strategies that may help support emotional and social development in this high-risk population.

Rehabilitation Treatment and Progress of Traumatic Brain Injury Dysfunction.

Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is a major cause of chronic disability. Worldwide, it is the leading cause of disability in the under 40s. Behavioral problems, mood, cognition, particularly memory, attention, and executive function are commonly impaired by TBI. Spending to assist, TBI survivors with disabilities are estimated to be costly per year. Such impaired functional outcomes following TBI can be improved via various rehabilitative approaches. The objective of the present paper is to review the current rehabilitation treatment of traumatic brain injury in adults.

Sleep and Parkinson Disease.

Sleep disorders are prevalent in Parkinson disease (PD), a disease with well recognized motor dysfunction. Sleep related problems received little attention until the last three decades. Sleep disorders seen in PD patients include insomnia, excessive sleepiness, restless legs syndrome, REM sleep behavior disorder. Some of these can have significant impact and lower the quality of life in these patients. An understanding of sleep issues in PD can help identify them early and result in optimal management.

Substance use: determinants and opportunities for prevention in the family and school context.

During adolescence, teenagers try a range of risk behaviors including smoking, drinking, and the use of soft drugs. Because substance use contributes to an unhealthy lifestyle of teenagers on the short term and can lead to serious health problems on the longer term, prevention in this target group is important. This chapter provides an overview of the determinants of substance use on the one hand, and primary and secondary prevention opportunities on the other hand, especially in the school context. At the end, future directions and recommendations for school, youth, and family are discussed.

Chromosome 22q11.2 microdeletion syndrome.

Chromosome 22q11.2 microdeletion syndrome is the most common microdeletion syndrome in humans. It involves the loss of genetic material on the short arm of one of the chromosome 22 alleles. Until advanced testing was available, this syndrome was known by various names including DiGeorge syndrome and velo-cardio-facial syndrome. This syndrome has a varied presentation with significant abnormalities including congenital heart disease, hypocalcemia, immunologic deficiencies, learning disabilities, and behavioral problems. A multidisciplinary approach is required to diagnose and manage the varied

Anesthetic management of an adult patient with Rett syndrome and limited mouth opening -A case report-.

Rett syndrome is a neurological disease that occurs only in females and it manifests with mental retardation, seizures, movement disorders, autistic behavior and abnormal breathing. A 19-year-old female with Rett syndrome underwent ophthalmologic surgery under general anesthesia at our institution. Airway control was difficult due to her limited mouth opening. We recommend that anesthesiologists should have proper knowledge about this disease and the patients to avoid the complications and problems that can be encountered during the perioperative period.

Staphylococcus aureus infections in adolescents.

Staphylococcus aureus infections are important causes of morbidity and mortality in the pediatric population. Over the past decade, community-associated methicillin-resistant S. aureus has emerged as an adolescent pathogen with disease ranging from mild skin and soft tissue infections to severe sepsis syndrome. Various conditions and behaviors common to adolescents render them more susceptible to staphylococcal infections. This review focuses on the problem of S. aureus in the adolescent population, including an outline on the approach, treatment, and prevention of these infections.

[An unusual hospitalization under constraint].

The case report describes a 45-year old man presenting of the behavioral problems and an aphasia of Wernicke, hospitalized under constraint. The urinary screening in the search of psychotropic substances is positive for the cannabis and the amphetamines. The neurological localization is confirmed by cerebral CT-scan. The discussion relates on the differential diagnosis between a schizophasia and an aphasia of Wernicke, on the difficulty of a somatic diagnosis among patients agitated under the effect of a drug and to the tendency to hospitalize those too quickly under constraint, on the noxious

Nicotine addiction and comorbidity with alcohol abuse and mental illness.

The World Health Organization estimates that one-third of the global adult population smokes. Because tobacco use is on the rise in developing countries, death resulting from tobacco use continues to rise. Nicotine, the main addictive component of tobacco, initiates synaptic and cellular changes that underlie the motivational and behavioral alterations that culminate in addiction. Nicotine addiction progresses rapidly in adolescents and is most highly expressed in vulnerable people who have psychiatric illness or other substance abuse problems.

Maternal anxiety: an emerging prognostic factor in neonatology.

UNLABELLED: Symptoms of anxiety in pregnant and postpartum women are of considerable concern due to their association with adverse obstetrical outcomes, postpartum depression, and emotional and behavioral problems in the children. Certain mothers are at particularly high risk for anxiety in the immediate postpartum period: those who have experienced preterm birth or other perinatal complications, as well as those lacking a satisfactory marital relationship or other forms of social support. CONCLUSION: Programs to detect and intervene with anxious mothers in the early postpartum period are war

Immediate behavioral and developmental considerations for internationally adopted children transitioning to families.

The arrival of a newly adopted child into the family is usually a joyous time. Behavioral concerns arise in many internationally adopted children, most of whom are infants or toddlers at the time of placement with their adoptive families. Problems with feeding, sleeping, and other daily activities are often prominent in the first few weeks after the adoption. Some children display emotional distress and developmental delays; however, most recover rapidly. Anticipatory guidance from the pediatrician can assist families and children with this major life transition.

Pediatric sleep disorders: new developments and evolving understanding.

Disorders of sleep in children are distinctly different from sleep disorders in adults. Since children are forced to constantly learn and adapt, the effects of disordered sleep may be more profound. This paper reviews the disorders of sleep that are most significant in each of the stages of development from infancy to adulthood. Recent literature pertaining to advances in the diagnosis and treatment of sudden infant death syndrome and obstructive sleep apnea syndrome in children are highlighted. In addition, recent literature on the relationship of behavior and learning problems to sleep disor

The development of a reinforcer choice assessment scale for persons with severe and profound mental retardation.

Reinforcement is a cornerstone for treating adaptive skills and eliminating problem behaviors for persons evincing mental retardation. To effectively use reinforcement, professionals must find reinforcers that are most effective for each individual. Establishing reinforcers is particularly important for persons functioning in the severe and profound ranges of mental retardation as reinforcers are often difficult to identify in this population. The current study aimed at developing a reinforcer rating scale that-would have applicability on a broad clinical basis, looking specifically at the psy…

Overinterpretation of gastroduodenal motility studies: two cases involving Munchausen syndrome by proxy.

Two children were thought to have an atypical gastroduodenal motility disorder because of the history and clinical course; both had received parenteral alimentation because of claims of inability to tolerate enteral feedings, and both continued to have unusual medical problems during parenteral alimentation. Both children had motility studies that were interpreted by a pediatric gastroenterologist to be "abnormal" and "diagnostic" of a motility disorder, but each was eventually shown to have a behavioral abnormality related to Munchausen syndrome by proxy.

Optometry's role in reading disabilities: resolving the controversy.

Optometry's involvement in the management of reading disabilities is often misunderstood. This paper clarifies the confusion surrounding specific reading disabilities and optometric vision therapy in the management of them. Topics include a historical review of dyslexia, theories of brain function, and a neuroanatomical model, as well as operational definitions and behavioral characteristics of the types of dyslexia. Methods for direct diagnosis of coding deficits in specific reading disability (dyslexia) are discussed. This approach explains the beneficial role of optometric vision therapy in
