Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices of General Nurses, Specialist Nurses, Resident Nurses, and Nursing Students Regarding Informed Consent: A Scoping Review Protocol.

Background: Informed consent is an essential ethical and legal process that safeguards patient autonomy, integrity, and rights in healthcare. Although it has traditionally been associated with medical practice, the expanding scope of nursing practice and increased professional autonomy require a clearer understanding of nurses' roles in this process. Given nurses' continuous and close contact with patients, examining their knowledge, attitudes, and practices regarding informed consent is essential to ensure ethical standards and patient safety. Objectives: This scoping review will map and synt

Knowing Pain Without Certainty: Recognition When Self-Report is Unavailable.

Pain assessment often follows a hierarchy: self-report is treated as the gold standard, while behavioural and physiological evidence are used when the report is unavailable. This protects patients against professional disbelief but can make those unable to self-report appear unable to contribute to knowledge about their pain. I argue that verbal report and nonverbal expression belong to one interpretive practice while retaining different epistemic roles. Self-report carries presumptive first-person authority because it conveys experience, meaning, and preferences. Behavioural evidence is indir

The Relationship Between Transition Shock and Missed Nursing Care Among New Graduate Nurses: A Cross-Sectional Study.

AIM: New graduate nurses experience transition shock during the first year of their professional lives. Limited prior studies have shown how transition shock affects freshly graduated nurses' ability to provide care, but further evidence related to missed care is required. This study is a report that evaluates the relationship between transition shock experienced and missed nursing care among new graduate nurses. DESIGN: This descriptive and correlational study involved 277 new graduate nurses working in four hospitals. METHODS: Data were collected using two standardised scales: the MISSCARE

Development and validation of a scale for evaluating intermittent catheterization ability of family caregivers of patients with neurogenic bladders.

In this study, we aimed to develop an assessment tool for the intermittent catheterization nursing ability of family caregivers of patients with neurogenic bladders and verify its psychometric characteristics. Using the Farran Comprehensive Care Skills Model as the theoretical framework and by integrating multiple methods, such as literature reviews, semi-structured interviews, group discussions, expert consultations, and pretests, an initial scale was developed. This study was a single-center, cross-sectional survey. A convenience sampling method was used to recruit 255 family caregivers of p

Potential profiles of social isolation in elderly stroke patients: A cross-sectional study.

AIM: Social isolation is a psychological state resulting from insufficient interpersonal interaction, marked by loneliness, helplessness, and unmet social needs following voluntary or involuntary social withdrawal. It may negatively impact the quality of life in elderly stroke patients. Due to its subtle nature and the varying clinical presentations and intervention needs across demographic groups, exploring its characteristics and influencing factors in this population holds important clinical value. METHODS: A total of 376 elderly stroke patients were surveyed between January and October 20

An infrastructural approach to cross-boundary healthcare access: The case of Hong Kong patients in the Greater Bay Area, China.

Cross-boundary healthcare travel has become increasingly important owing to accelerated population mobility and booming international healthcare markets. While prior research has examined why patients seek healthcare abroad, less is known about how their access is enabled and challenged in practice. To fill this gap, this paper introduces an infrastructural approach, which accounts for the interactions among various infrastructural actors and their power dynamics embedded in the broader market-state-social relationships. It examines how accessibility and inequalities are (re)produced and gover

The JRS guideline for the management of pneumonia in adults 2024.

The Japanese Respiratory Society published the Adult Pneumonia Practice Guidelines 2024 in April 2024. In Japan, a super-aged society, the disease burden of pneumonia is significant and is expected to grow in the future. Given this historical context, the most important themes in this revision of the guidelines include the appropriate use of antibiotics and measures against pneumonia in older adults. A large portion of these cases involves aspiration pneumonia, making it challenging to achieve fundamental improvement with antibiotic treatment alone and necessitating a comprehensive approach. P

Conception, pregnancy and inflammatory bowel disease-Current concepts for the practising clinician.

The peak incidence of inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) coincides with a woman's prime reproductive years. The management of IBD during pregnancy can be challenging for healthcare professionals, underpinning the need for a multi-disciplinary approach with shared decision-making with the patient. Pre-conception counselling can address patient concerns, improve pregnancy specific IBD patient knowledge and provide a personalized risk assessment, to ensure optimal maternal and fetal outcomes. Most women with IBD have fertility rates comparable with the general population, although voluntary childle

Exploring the Interplay between Asthma and Hemoglobinopathies: A Comprehensive Review.

Asthma, a prevalent chronic respiratory condition characterized by inflammation of the airways and bronchoconstriction, has demonstrated a potential association with hemoglobinopathies such as thalassemia and sickle cell disease (SCD). Numerous studies have highlighted a higher prevalence of asthma among thalassemia patients compared to the general population, with rates ranging around 30%. Similarly, asthma frequently coexists with SCD, affecting approximately 20-48% of patients. Children with SCD often experience heightened lower airway obstruction and airway hyper-reactivity. Notably, the p
