Practitioner Review: The effectiveness of solution focused brief therapy with children and families: a systematic and critical evaluation of the literature from 1990-2010.

BACKGROUND AND SCOPE: Solution focused brief therapy (SFBT) is a strengths-based therapeutic approach, emphasizing the resources that people possess and how these can be applied to a positive change process. The current study provides a systematic review of the SFBT evidence base and a critical evaluation of the use and application of SFBT in clinical practice with children and families. METHODS: Between 21 December 2010 and 12 May 2011 forty-four database searches (including, PsychInfo, ISI Web of Knowledge, ASSIA, British Education Index, Medline and Scopus), web searches and consultation w

Effects of a modified group intervention with early-stage breast cancer patients.

The aim of this study was to investigate the clinical effectiveness of a psychiatric intervention program consisting of 5 weekly structured interventions and 3 additional group meetings every two months. Previous studies revealed that a 5 weekly structured intervention program was effective for alleviating psychological discomforts in Japanese breast cancer patients, and that the effectiveness persisted for 6 months for patients without lymph node metastasis or adjustment disorders. Since this 5-session intervention did not have persistent effects in patients with lymph node metastasis and/or

The effects of animal-assisted therapy on anxiety ratings of hospitalized psychiatric patients.

OBJECTIVE: Animal-assisted therapy involves interaction between patients and a trained animal, along with its human owner or handler, with the aim of facilitating patients' progress toward therapeutic goals. This study examined whether a session of animal-assisted therapy reduced the anxiety levels of hospitalized psychiatric patients and whether any differences in reductions in anxiety were associated with patients' diagnoses. METHODS: Study subjects were 230 patients referred for therapeutic recreation sessions. A pre- and posttreatment crossover study design was used to compare the effects

Short vs long hospitalization. A controlled study: III. Inpatient results for nonschizophrenics.

A controlled, prospective, two-year follow-up study examined the relative effectiveness of short-term vs long-term psychiatric hospitalization. Results of the inpatient phase for a sample of 74 nonschizophrenic patients are reported here. About four weeks after admission the patients hospitalized for a short stay were discharged, and at that time were functioning better than the patients in the long-stay group. When the patients hospitalized for a long stay were discharged, three to fur months after admission, they were then functioning as well as, but not noticeably better than, the patients

Effectiveness of a Psychosexual Group Intervention to Treat Problems of Sexual Desire in Women with Cancer: An Experimental Study.

The emergence or worsening of sexual dysfunction is a frequent consequence of cancer treatment. Our aim was to determine the effectiveness of a psychosexual group intervention in improving sexual interest disorder in female cancer survivors. We carried out an experimental study conducted with a waiting list control group. The sample comprised 63 women (M = 51.49 years, SD = 5; range: 35-63). All the participants had been diagnosed with cancer, had had a partner for at least six months prior to starting the intervention, had completed inpatient cancer treatment, and had difficulties with sexual

Evaluating Functional Imagery Training and Internal Visual Imagery on Tennis Serve Performance.

Imagery is widely used in sport, but its effectiveness depends on how it is structured and the range of senses engaged. This study compared Functional Imagery Training-a multisensory, motivational intervention-with single-sense internal visual imagery and a control condition without imagery training. Thirty-eight competitive tennis players completed imagery ability and preference assessments before engaging in a 6-week intervention. Serve accuracy was measured pre- and postintervention using a target-based scoring task. Both imagery conditions led to performance improvements, with Functional I

Twenty Years of Dignity Therapy: Evidence, Challenges, and Implications for Person-Centered Care.

Twenty years have passed since Dignity Therapy was introduced as a brief psychotherapeutic intervention grounded in the Model of Dignity in the terminally ill. Designed to address threats to personhood by supporting generativity, meaning, and legacy, it invites patients to create enduring documents that reflect their values, identities, and life narratives. Although initially conceived for end-of-life care, Dignity Therapy has since been adapted for diverse populations, including children, individuals with non-malignant illness, those experiencing cognitive decline, people who are grieving; an

The African youth in mind (Y-MIND) brief psychological intervention for depression among school-going adolescents in Ghana: a development case series.

BACKGROUND: Depression is common among adolescents, particularly in low- and middle-income countries, such as Ghana. Yet, access to mental health care in these settings remains limited. There is a need for research to focus on innovative strategies to improve access to care. The African Youth in Mind consortium, together with a group of young people with depression and relevant stakeholders have developed a novel six-session lay professional intervention (Y-MIND) to treat depression. METHOD: As part of the early phase of intervention development, we conducted a case series aimed at testing th

Mentalization-Based Therapy for Children and Families: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of the Recent Literature.

This systematic review evaluated the impact of Mentalization-Based Therapy (MBT) parenting interventions on parental reflective functioning (PRF, the operationalized measure of the metalizing construct), child psychosocial outcomes, and parenting factors. A meta-analysis of studies measuring PRF using the Parental Reflective Functioning Questionnaire (PRFQ) indicated small, non-significant effects, with high heterogeneity across studies. Narrative synthesis of 19 studies suggested generally positive outcomes, including improvements in PRF, child emotional regulation and parental stress, though

Brain Plasticity Induced by Motor Imagery Training: Role of Cognitive Abilities, Interoceptive Sensibility, and Hypnotizability.

High hypnotizability predicts greater similarity between the cortical correlates of actual and imagined action (functional equivalence, FE). The study investigated whether motor imagery (MI) training (MIT) improves subjective experience, chronometric indices, and the EEG correlates of MI (like physical training), and whether absorption, imagery abilities, and interoceptive sensibility influence the possible improvement. Participants with high, medium, and low hypnotizability participated in a session before MIT (S1) and another session after 15-day MIT (S2). Each session included baseline cond

Recognition and Resistance in Early Psychotherapeutic Encounters: Therapist Response Style, Narcissistic Admiration and Rivalry, and Public Mental Health Engagement.

Early engagement with psychotherapy is a public mental health issue because potential patients' first appraisals of psychological care may shape treatment expectations, willingness to continue, and openness to receiving effective support. In first-contact therapeutic encounters, people respond not only to the content of a therapist's intervention but also to the interpersonal meaning conveyed by the therapist's response style. Guided by a recognition-resistance framework and models of narcissistic self-regulation, we examined how therapist response style and trait narcissistic admiration and r…

An Investigation of Key Symptoms That Account for the Early Response Effect During Psychological Therapy for Eating Disorders.

OBJECTIVE: The early response effect, defined as a reliable symptomatic improvement during the initial phase of treatment, is the most robust predictor of recovery following eating disorder treatment. This study aimed to investigate which symptom domains mostly influence the early response effect. METHODS: Data from N = 232 adult patients (90.8% females; mean age = 29.97, SD = 10.67) treated in an outpatient eating disorder psychotherapy service were randomly partitioned into training (N = 161) and test (N = 71) samples. A Bayesian network model was developed in the training sample, modelling…

A randomised controlled feasibility study of brief cognitive therapy for the treatment of PANic Disorder in Adolescents (PANDA).

BACKGROUND: Panic disorder occurs in 1-3% of adolescents and without treatment often has a chronic course. Treatments need to be effective and efficient to be delivered in routine services. Given that a brief version of cognitive therapy has been shown to be effective in adults, an adapted version could be beneficial for adolescents with panic disorder. AIMS: We aimed to establish clinical and economic proof-of-concept for brief cognitive therapy for adolescent panic disorder and examine the feasibility of a future definitive trial compared with a brief generic form of CBT, using several well

A whole-of-society approach to depression prevention during the global pandemic: Preliminary data from three large-scale trials.

OBJECTIVE: Despite the prevalence of depressive disorders among youth, there is no health system model to address the prevention of these disorders. METHOD: With the goal of creating effective, tolerable, and scalable interventions for the prevention of adolescent depression, we have fielded three randomized clinical trials, centered in health care delivery organizations that use a whole-of-society approach: (a) Path 2 Purpose (N = 664), comparing the Competent Adulthood Transition with Cognitive Behavioral, Humanistic, and Interpersonal Training (CATCH-IT; B. The effect of school-based group counseling on Chinese mainland adolescents' mental health and academic functioning: A meta-analysis of controlled studies.

A growing number of studies have examined the effects of group counseling on students' mental health or academic functioning in China; no meta-analysis of these studies has yet been conducted, which may limit school-based applicability or the development of service systems. This study sought to establish an overall effect size for group counseling interventions, as well as identify potential moderator variable effects on their efficacy for Chinese mainland adolescents in particular. A total of 611 studies, comprising 15,320 adolescent participants altogether, were included, with meta-analyses
