HIV-1 drug resistance and resistance testing.

The global scale-up of antiretroviral (ARV) therapy (ART) has led to dramatic reductions in HIV-1 mortality and incidence. However, HIV drug resistance (HIVDR) poses a potential threat to the long-term success of ART and is emerging as a threat to the elimination of AIDS as a public health problem by 2030. In this review we describe the genetic mechanisms, epidemiology, and management of HIVDR at both individual and population levels across diverse economic and geographic settings. To describe the genetic mechanisms of HIVDR, we review the genetic barriers to resistance for the most commonly u

When Food Safety Goes Viral: The Influence of the Documentary Poisoned on Trust in Food Supply Chain Actors and Food Risk Perceptions Among Young Adult College Students in Indiana.

As foodborne illnesses pose a significant public health concern in the United States, the rise of streaming platforms broadens audiences' exposure to food safety documentary films. This investigation examines how the documentary Poisoned: The Dirty Truth About Your Food shapes young adults' perceptions, attitudes, and trust in the food supply chain among undergraduate students at one university in Indiana enrolled in food science (Study 1, n = 19) and nonfood science programs (Study 2, n = 59). An explanatory mixed-methods design combined surveys at three time points with a focus group discuss

Long-term effects of urban biophilic art environments on depression and anxiety symptoms: a longitudinal intervention study.

Urban environments have been increasingly associated with elevated rates of depression and anxiety disorders, prompting exploration of innovative environmental interventions to promote mental health. This longitudinal study investigated the therapeutic effects of urban biophilic art environments on depression and anxiety symptoms among 300 urban residents over a 12-month period. Using a quasi-experimental design, participants were divided into intervention (n = 156) and control (n = 144) groups, with the intervention group having regular access to purpose-designed biophilic art installations i

"It becomes more difficult when people don't empathize with us": COVID-19-related stigmatization experienced by survivors in Nepal.

The COVID-19 pandemic caused widespread social disruption, with stigma emerging as a significant challenge for individuals who survived infection. This qualitative study explored the forms, drivers, and impacts of COVID-19-related stigma among survivors in Eastern Nepal. In-depth interviews were conducted with 15 COVID-19 survivors who had reported stigma in a preceding cross-sectional survey. Due to pandemic-related restrictions, interviews were conducted over the phone. Data were analysed thematically following the process outlined by Braun and Clarke. COVID-19 stigma was multifaceted, inclu

Programming the Infant Gut: How Maternal and Early Life Nutrition Shape the Infant Microbiome and Long-term Health-A Narrative Review.

Childhood malnutrition, including undernutrition, obesity, and micronutrient deficiencies, remains a major global health burden. Emerging evidence points to the gut microbiome as a critical mediator linking maternal, prenatal, and early-life nutrition to long-term offspring health outcomes. From conception and through the first years of life, maternal diet, metabolic state, and environmental exposures shape offspring microbial colonization and maturation. Breastfeeding and consumption of fiber-rich and fermented foods (maternal and post-weaning) support beneficial microbiota, while high-fat, h

The evaluation of surveillance systems in veterinary public health: A scoping review on the attributes and assessment frameworks most commonly used.

Regular evaluation of disease surveillance programs is essential to ensure they provide reliable and useful information in an efficient manner. Surveillance systems' performance can be assessed using measurable characteristics, defined as attributes. This scoping review provides a global overview of the attributes and methodological frameworks used to assess veterinary public health surveillance systems over the past 15 years. A literature search was conducted on Pubmed and Scopus for studies published between 2010 and 2025, identifying 125 eligible studies, with 116 describing the evaluation

Noise pollution mitigation and control in urban areas near international borders through 2D noise mapping.

Noise pollution is defined as any disturbing or unwanted sound that disrupts or harms human health or wildlife. Noise pollution can have profound effects on both human health and the environment. For humans, exposure to excessive noise levels has been linked to a range of health issues, including hearing damage, stress, and sleep disturbances. Noise monitoring and mapping play a crucial role in understanding, managing, and mitigating the impacts of noise pollution on communities and the environment. Urban areas near borders are generally less studied due to restrictions. Therefore, a study has

Two Cases of Delayed Diagnosis of Leprosy in Mauritania.

Leprosy is a chronic infectious disease that mainly affects the skin, mucous membranes, and peripheral nervous system. The clinical manifestations of leprosy are numerous and polymorphic with the most frequent signs involving skin and neurological damage. Some of its manifestations, such as joint pain, are unusual. Its elimination as a public health problem in many countries seems to lead to a lack of practical knowledge among health care personnel and as a consequence a risk of late diagnosis. As in other countries, leprosy has become rare in Mauritania. We report two cases of misdiagnosed le

The future of drugs: recreational drug use and sexual health among gay and other men who have sex with men.

There are complex historical connections between sexual minoritisation and desires to chemically alter bodily experience. For gay men, drug and alcohol use can be a creative or experimental response to social marginalisation - and not necessarily a problematic one in every instance. Numerous studies have found that infection with HIV and other sexually transmissible infections (STIs) is more likely among gay and men who have sex with men (MSM) who use recreational drugs than those who do not, but the causal nature of these relations is uncertain. Sexualised drug use is associated with a range

Reframing trauma recovery for public health: introducing the recovery assemblage framework.

Psychological trauma represents a major global health challenge, with adverse childhood experiences (ACEs) contributing to long-term difficulties in mental and physical health, relationships, and wellbeing. Despite this, dominant models of trauma recovery are largely grounded in biomedical and individualized paradigms, and prioritize linear pathways focused on symptom reduction and therapeutic outcomes. Such approaches risk locating responsibility for recovery within the individual, overlooking the broader social, relational, and structural conditions that shape how recovery is understood and
