Little is known about the psychological mechanisms underlying the clinical benefits of mindfulness-based interventions (MBIs). In the present review, we suggest that mindfulness-based interventions may enhance positive emotional regulation strategies, as well as self-compassion levels, and decrease rumination and experiential avoidance. These changes are, in turn, associated with several clinical benefits including the reduction of stress and depression levels, as well as the enhancement of positive emotions. Limitations and potential applications of these findings are discussed.

People expect to reap hedonic rewards when they punish an offender, but in at least some instances, revenge has hedonic consequences that are precisely the opposite of what people expect. Three studies showed that (a) one reason for this is that people who punish continue to ruminate about the offender, whereas those who do not punish "move on" and think less about the offender, and (b) people fail to appreciate the different affective consequences of witnessing and instigating punishment.

The collection of articles in this issue constitutes the most thorough review of posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) yet. At this point, the accumulated phenomenological, epidemiological, biological, and treatment evidence make it crystal clear that PTSD stands alone as a unique psychiatric disorder. It is not the same as depression, although many PTSD patients are also depressed, and it is not the same as the other anxiety disorders, although PTSD patients frequently also suffer with panic attacks, social avoidance, and obsessive ruminations.

Seven completed suicides in a family of lower socioeconomic status and suburban domicile in Pondicherry are reported. The presence of bipolar affective disorder in the family members and the absence of exogenous factors are illustrated by utilising both family history method and family study method. The details collected formed the basis for the terminology 'familial suicide'. The management of the index case, one of the only three surviving male members of the family, who presented with suicidal ruminations and depressive features, is described.

For the treatment of recurrent bloat a soft-rubber balloon tube which is inserted through the nose into the rumen and can stay there for several days was developed. The inflated balloon ensures a floating of the tip of the tube in the dorsal gas cap above the rumen contents. The tube can also be used as a prophylactic measure to avoid excessive ruminal gas accumulation in recumbent patients during surgery. This report describes the experiences with this balloon tube gathered in 23 clinical patients.

Cows from 8 commercial Dutch dairy farms were equipped with 2 sensors to study their complete time budgets of eating, rumination, lying, standing and walking times as derived from a neck and a leg sensor. Daily sensor data of 1074 cows with 3201 lactations was used from 1 month prepartum until 10 months postpartum. Farms provided data over a 5 year period.
