Implementing a Validated Multi-Symptom Assessment Tool During Telephone Triage to Reduce Oncology Patient Emergency Room Visits.

Cancer treatments induce multiple unwanted side effects that often go unrelieved, resulting in emergency room (ER) visits. Oncology clinics have established triage clinics (TCs) for symptom management, thereby improving access to care and decreasing ER utilization. In addition, evidence proves that validated patient-reported outcome (PRO) tools support improved symptom management and decreased ER visits. This quality improvement project aimed to determine if or to what degree implementing the MD Anderson Symptom Inventory (MDASI) tool decreases emergency room visits, with or without hospitaliz

Patients' and caregivers' perspectives on preparedness for and experience with chimeric antigen receptor T-cell therapy.

BackgroundChimeric antigen receptor-T (CAR-T) cell therapy has improved survival, yet its toxic profile may impact on survivors' well-being. We examined patients' and caregivers' perspectives on the most common, severe, and distressing side effects across recovery (ie, first 60 days) and survivorship (ie, 60 days and onwards) and explored their perspectives on the education received to prepare for CAR-T.Materials and methodsWe conducted semi-structured interviews with patients and caregivers addressing (1) how they prepared for CAR-T, (2) the side effects experienced during the first-year post

Risk of fractures in half a million survivors of 20 cancers: a population-based matched cohort study using linked English electronic health records.

BACKGROUND: A history of multiple myeloma, prostate cancer, and breast cancer has been associated with adverse bone health, but associations across a broader range of cancers are unclear. We aimed to compare the risk of any bone fracture and major osteoporotic fractures in survivors of a wide range of cancers versus cancer-free individuals. METHODS: In this population-based matched cohort study, we used electronic health records from the UK Clinical Practice Research Datalink linked to hospital data. We included adults (aged ≥18 years) eligible for linkage, and we restricted the study start t

Incidence and temporal trends of depression and anxiety following cancer diagnosis in Japan: Insights from the LIFE study.

Depression and anxiety are common among cancer patients and are associated with poorer treatment adherence, quality of life, and survival outcomes. While the prevalence of these conditions has been widely reported, less is known about their incidence and temporal trends. This study aimed to clarify the incidence and temporal patterns of depression and anxiety following cancer diagnosis using claims data from 14 Japanese municipalities. The study cohort comprised 22,863 newly diagnosed cancer patients from April 2018 to March 2021. During a follow-up period of up to 24 months after diagnosis, w

Exercise and cancer: a position statement from the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology.

Due to improvements in the number of cancer survivors and survival time, there is a growing interest in healthy behaviors, such as physical activity (PA), and their potential impact on cancer- and non-cancer-related morbidity in individuals with cancer. Commissioned by the Spanish Society of Medical Oncology (SEOM), in this review, we sought to distill the most recent evidence on this topic, focusing on the mechanisms that underpin the effects of PA on cancer, the role of PA in cancer prevention and in the prognosis of cancer and practical recommendations for clinicians regarding PA counseling

Risk Factors Associated with the Development of Immune-Checkpoint Inhibitor Diabetes Mellitus: An Integrative Review.

Immune checkpoint inhibitor diabetes mellitus (ICI-DM) is an emerging phenomenon in the adult oncology population, with an increased incidence reflecting the increased use of immunotherapy; however, risk factors for ICI-DM have not been fully identified. The aim of this integrated literature review was to synthesize the published literature on ICI-DM and the factors associated with an increased risk for its development. The review was guided by Sanieszko's Epidemiology Triad theoretical framework. We conducted a literature search using the Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literatu

Adaptation of digital integration of PROMs and PREMs in oncology during implementation: a scoping review.

PurposeDigital tools facilitate the timely collection of patient-reported outcome and experience measures (ePROMs/PREMs), but there is no consistent reporting on the technical and content adaptations made essential to implementing these digital tools in a specific context. Adaptations made to ePROMs/ePREMs can improve data quality, clinical management, and patient outcomes. We explored how studies report on adaptations and the reasons and types of these during an implementation process of ePROMs/ePREMs systems in routine cancer care.MethodsWe conducted a systematic scoping review. We searched

Fatigue, quality of life and physical fitness following an exercise intervention in multiple myeloma survivors (MASCOT): an exploratory randomised Phase 2 trial utilising a modified Zelen design.

BACKGROUND: Exercise may improve fatigue in multiple myeloma survivors, but trial evidence is limited, and exercise may be perceived as risky in this older patient group with osteolytic bone destruction. METHODS: In this Phase 2 Zelen trial, multiple myeloma survivors who had completed treatment at least 6 weeks ago, or were on maintenance only, were enrolled in a cohort study and randomly assigned to usual care or a 6-month exercise programme of tailored aerobic and resistance training. Outcome assessors and usual care participants were masked. The primary outcome was the FACIT-F fatigue sco

Patient Preferences for Multiple Myeloma Treatments: A Multinational Qualitative Study.

Background: Investigational and marketed drugs for the treatment of multiple myeloma (MM) are associated with a range of characteristics and uncertainties regarding long term side-effects and efficacy. This raises questions about what matters most to patients living with this disease. This study aimed to understand which characteristics MM patients find most important, and hence should be included as attributes and levels in a subsequent quantitative preference survey among MM patients. Methods: This qualitative study involved: (i) a scoping literature review, (ii) discussions with MM patients

Development and validation of a patient-reported outcome tool to assess cancer-related financial toxicity in Italy: a protocol.

IntroductionFinancial toxicity (FT) is a well-recognised problem in oncology. US-based studies have shown that: (a) cancer patients have a 2.7 times risk of bankruptcy; (b) patients who declare bankruptcy have a 79% greater hazard of death; (c) financial burden significantly impairs quality of life (QoL) and (d) reduces compliance and adherence to treatment prescriptions. The aim of the project is to develop and validate a patient-reported-outcome (PRO) measure to assess FT of cancer patients in Italy, where, despite the universal health coverage provided by the National Health Service, FT is

Safety of Rapid Daratumumab Infusion: A Retrospective, Multicenter, Real-Life Analysis on 134 Patients With Multiple Myeloma.

BackgroundThe anti-CD38 monoclonal antibody daratumumab is the backbone of most anti-multiple myeloma (MM) regimens. To mitigate the risk of infusion-related reactions (IRRs), intravenous daratumumab administration requires 7 hours for the first infusion and 3.5-4 hours thereafter, thus making daratumumab-containing regimens burdensome for patients and health care resources. Preliminary data suggest that a rapid (90-minute) infusion of daratumumab is safe and does not increase IRRs. The rapid schedule was adopted by our centers since 2019.MethodsWe conducted an observational multi-center, real

Cemented long versus standard femoral stem in proximal femoral metastasis: a noninferiority single-blinded quasi-randomized clinical trial.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Proximal femur is a common site for metastasis, it has a significant impact on patient's quality of life, and traditional treatment aims at protecting as much as possible from the femur. However, recent studies have demonstrated increased rate of complications and questioned the need for long stem in this high-risk group. Our purpose is to determine whether standard-length femoral stem is noninferior to long femoral stem in the treatment of proximal femoral metastasis. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Between 2019 and 2021, we prospectively included 24 patients with proximal femo
