Staphylococcus aureus are a hazard to human health since they can cause infections and food poisoning. Antimicrobial resistant strains render the treatment of infections problematic and contribute to the spread of antimicrobial resistance. They are therefore of great public concern. This study determined the resistance pattern of coagulase-positive S. aureus (CPSA) isolated from nasal swabs of 100 slaughter pigs from one farm in Uruguay. Out of 69 animals, 71 CPSA were collected. Minimum inhibitory concentrations of 20 antimicrobials were determined using the broth microdilution method in acco

The unusual and unprecedented occurrence of a patient with hereditary hemorrhagic telangiectasia (HHT) and a polymicrobial abscess with three different organisms, including fungi, is reported. The patient was a 48-year-old woman with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) infection and HHT who was brought to the hospital after a motor vehicle accident with altered mental status. Computed tomography did not reveal evidence of acute brain injury but showed a left frontal brain abscess. The patient underwent neurosurgical drainage of the abscess. On culture the abscess yielded methicillin-resistant S

Over the last decade, methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) strains have emerged as serious pathogens in the nosocomial and community setting. Hospitalization costs associated with MRSA infections are substantially greater than those associated with methicillin-sensitive S. aureus (MSSA) infections, and MRSA has wider economic effects that involve indirect costs to the patient and to society. In addition, there is some evidence suggesting that MRSA infections increase morbidity and the risk of mortality. Glycopeptides are the backbone antibiotics for the treatment of MRSA infectio

BACKGROUND: Impetigo and scabies are endemic diseases in many tropical countries; however the epidemiology of these diseases is poorly understood in many areas, particularly in the Pacific.
METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: We conducted three epidemiological studies in 2006 and 2007 to determine the burden of disease due to impetigo and scabies in children in Fiji using simple and easily reproducible methodology. Two studies were performed in primary school children (one study was a cross-sectional study and the other a prospective cohort study over ten months) and one study was performed in in

OBJECTIVE: To determine the commonest organism cultured from the blood of children suspected to have bacterial sepsis and their antibiogram sensitivity using the commonly used antibiotics in a private practice and see if there are differences from established data from other areas.
METHOD: Children beyond neonatal age presenting to a children's specialist hospital in southeast Nigeria over a 2 year period with fever and other features of systemic inflammatory response syndrome (SIRS) thought to be due to bacterial infection (but without focal point of infection) had their blood cultures done.

OBJECTIVES: This work was conducted to study the prophylactic efficacy of 2 topical antibiotic ointments (mupirocin and nitrofurazone) against wound infection in experimental contaminated crush wounds.
METHODS: Male Wistar rats underwent two 2-cm incisions at the back side and randomized into 3 groups--placebo (n = 14), mupirocin (n = 14), and nitrofurazone (n = 14)--and infected with either Staphylococcus aureus or S. pyogenes. All wound edges were crushed for 5 seconds with hemostats to simulate crush injury before inoculation of the microorganisms. Half of the wounds were sutured and the o

BACKGROUND: Infection rates for ventricular assist devices (VADs) are improving but the presence of infections remains problematic. Intraperitoneal pump placement may decrease the rate of infection.
METHODS: This study is a single-institution, retrospective comparison of infections for an extraperitoneal vs an intraperitoneal position with a polytetrafluoroethylene (PTFE) sheet separating the VAD from visceral organs. Implants were performed by a single surgical team from January 1, 2002 to May 31, 2006 (n = 65) for bridge-to-transplant or destination therapy. Patients with paracorporeal pump

INTRODUCTION: Inflammatory abdominal aortic aneurysm accounts for 5% to 10% of all cases of abdominal aortic aneurysm and differs from typical atherosclerotic abdominal aortic aneurysm in many important ways. Although both inflammatory and atherosclerotic abdominal aortic aneurysms most commonly affect the infrarenal portion of the abdominal aorta, patients with the inflammatory variant are younger and usually symptomatic, chiefly from back or abdominal pain. Unlike patients with atherosclerotic abdominal aortic aneurysm, most with the inflammatoryvariant have an elevated erythrocyte sedimenta

The supply of fosfomycin had to be carefully controlled over metropolitan France during 10 weeks because of a unique crisis in production. Three hundred and forty prescriptions were collected and re-examined by an expert committee. The main indications were osteoarthritis (27%), lung infections (21%), severe sepsis (12.5%), and urinary tract infections (11%). The main bacteria involved, often multidrug resistant, were Pseudomonas aeruginosa (40%) and methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus. A careful analysis of the antibiogram proved fosfomycin to be irreplaceable in 36% of the cases. This study

A healthy 23-year-old man developed swelling of his left upper eyelid, conjunctival chemosis, and ocular motility restriction associated with epiphora and purulent discharge from the lacrimal ductules. Clinical examination, imaging, and culture results disclosed dacryoadenitis caused by community-acquired methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of methicillin-resistant S. aureus-associated dacryoadenitis.

INTRODUCTION: Intravitreal injections for the treatment of retinal disease have increased the risk of endophthalmitis. We developed a rabbit model to investigate whether topical 0.5% moxifloxacin could prevent endophthalmitis after an intravitreal injection.
METHODS: A rabbit model of intravitreal injection to produce endophthalmitis was developed by injecting triamcinolone into the vitreous through a depot of subconjunctival Staphylococcus aureus (10(7) cfu). Endophthalmitis was evaluated clinically and confirmed by culture. The model was tested with a commercially available brand of topical

BACKGROUND: Septic pulmonary emboli are the result of infections that typically originate from an extrapulmonary source. Septic pulmonary embolus is a rare disorder that classically presents with fever, respiratory symptoms, and lung infiltrates.
OBJECTIVES: Our objective is to share our experience of a rare diagnosis that was the result of a very common bacterium seen in the Emergency Department (ED).
CASE REPORT: We present a case of methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) sepsis presenting as bilateral septic pulmonary emboli in a patient with undiagnosed acquired immunodeficie

BACKGROUND: The rate of recovery methicillin resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) in tonsils that were removed because of recurrent Group A-beta-hemolytic streptococci (GABHS) tonsillitis was not previously reported. MRSA may serve as a potential source for the spread of these organisms to other body sites as well to other individuals. This study investigated the rate of recovery of MRSA as well as other aerobic organisms from tonsils that were removed because of recurrent GABHS infection.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: Core and surface tonsillar cultures for aerobic bacteria were obtained from 44 c

Central venous catheters (CVC) are frequently used in children with haemophilia to deliver factor infusions for the treatment or prophylaxis of bleeding. Complications of CVCs in patients with haemophilia include thrombosis and infection. We report a young boy with severe haemophilia A and an inhibitor who developed disseminated Staphylococcus aureus infection most likely related to a CVC. To our knowledge, this is the first reported case of fatal sepsis secondary to a CVC in a patient with haemophilia.

AIMS: Tamm-Horsfall protein (THP) is urine's most abundant protein, but its biological function has remained elusive. Recently, THP-deficient (THP(-/-)) mice were shown to have difficulty clearing Escherichia coli from the urinary bladder. It has remained unclear if interaction between THP and E. coli is specific for E. coli or if THP has a versatile ability to clear a variety of bacteria from the bladder, and act as a broad host-defense mechanism against urinary tract infection (UTI). In this study, we examined the role of THP as a protective factor against UTI caused by bacteria other than E

We report the unusual case of a 66-year-old alcoholic male who presented with acute arm ischemia 4 months following ipsilateral subclavian artery stenting. The patient had a petechial rash and Janeway lesions in the distribution of the affected subclavian artery. He had been treated for an infected dialysis graft 10 days prior to entry into the hospital. Subsequent angiogram confirmed a patent stent with intraluminal filling defects and occlusion of the brachial artery. Thrombectomy yielded material that was consistent with septic emboli and CT scan of the chest was suggestive of a mycotic ane
