Increase in short-term and long-term stress-associated mental illness after Jiji earthquake in Taiwan: A twenty-year longitudinal population-based cohort study (1999-2019).

BACKGROUND: Earthquakes have caused profound physical and mental health impacts in human history. The Jiji earthquake, which had a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale, occurred on 21 September 1999 in Taiwan. A close follow-up on the mental health status of affected adults after major natural disasters to construct the short-term and long-term risk and prevalence of stress-associated mental illnesses has not been performed by using the nationwide health databases. METHODS: This population-based cohort study included 468,804 adults affected by Jiji earthquake spanning from 2000 to 2019 who w

Level of perceived social support, and associated factors, in combat-exposed (ex-)military personnel: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE: Combat deployment increases exposure to potentially traumatic events. Perceived social support (PSS) may promote health and recovery from combat trauma. This systematic review and meta-analysis aimed to synthesize studies investigating the level of PSS and associated factors among (ex-)military personnel who served in the Iraq/Afghanistan conflicts. METHODS: Five electronic databases were searched in August 2023 and searches were restricted to the beginning of the Iraq/Afghanistan conflicts in 2001. The search was conducted according to the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Re

Depression, anxiety, and internalizing symptoms in Spanish children and adolescents: estimated rates and comorbidity patterns.

The mental health of children and adolescents is a critical concern, as a significant proportion of internalizing disorders emerge early in life, highlighting the importance of timely identification and intervention. However, recent data on the prevalence and comorbidity of these disorders among Spanish youth remain scarce. This study aims to examine the estimated rates and comorbidity patterns of internalizing symptoms -including depression, generalized (GAD) and social anxiety, somatic complaints, post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD), and eating behavior

Sex differences in psychiatric comorbidity and clinical presentation in youths with conduct disorder.

BACKGROUND: Conduct disorder (CD) rarely occurs alone but is typically accompanied by comorbid psychiatric disorders, which complicates the clinical presentation and treatment of affected youths. The aim of this study was to investigate sex differences in comorbidity pattern in CD and to systematically explore the 'gender paradox' and 'delayed-onset pathway' hypotheses of female CD. METHODS: As part of the FemNAT-CD multisite study, semistructured clinical interviews and rating scales were used to perform a comprehensive phenotypic characterization of 454 girls and 295 boys with CD (9-18 year

A systematic review of sleep disturbance in anxiety and related disorders.

Recent research suggests that sleep disturbance may be a transdiagnostic process, and there is increasing interest in examining how sleep disturbance may contribute to anxiety and related disorders. The current review summarizes and synthesizes the extant research assessing sleep in anxiety and related disorders. The findings suggest that sleep disturbance exacerbates symptom severity in the majority of anxiety and related disorders. However, the nature of sleep disturbance often varies as a function of objective versus subjective assessment. Although sleep disturbance is a correlate of most a

Comorbid anxiety in bipolar disorder alters treatment and prognosis.

Mood disorders in general, and bipolar disorder in particular, are unique among the psychiatric conditions in that they are associated with extraordinarily high rates of comorbidity with a multitude of psychiatric and medical conditions. Among all the potential comorbidities, co-occurring anxiety disorders stand out due to their very high prevalence. Outcome in bipolar illness is worse in the presence of a comorbid anxiety disorder. The coexistence of an anxiety disorder presents a particularly difficult challenge in the treatment of bipolar illness since antidepressants, the mainstay of pharm

Transdiagnostic psychopathology among individuals with co-occurring problematic pornography use and alcohol use problems.

Despite the established relationship between compulsive sexual behaviors (CSBs) and alcohol use problems, the consequences of co-occurring problematic pornography use (PPU) and alcohol use problems remain unclear (Ballester-Arnal et al., 2020). This study sought to identify if individuals experiencing PPU alone, alcohol use problems alone, and co-occurring PPU and alcohol use problems significantly differ across transdiagnostic processes of psychopathology. Participants completed a cross-sectional survey and were grouped as follows: (1) no PPU/no alcohol use problems (n = 2085), (2) clinically

Pre-disaster Health Vulnerabilities Predict Major Depressive Disorder Symptoms Among High-Risk Puerto Rican Adults after Hurricanes Maria and Irma.

OBJECTIVE: Robust research has established that preexisting physical and mental health conditions increase risk for adverse psychiatric outcomes after disasters. However, it is unclear if increased risk is independent of disaster exposure, and most studies have relied on retrospective reports of pre-disaster functioning. METHODS: In a pre-post sample of high-risk Puerto Rican adults (N = 361) who experienced Hurricanes Irma and Maria, we assessed: 1) whether indicators of pre-disaster depression and physical health conditions were associated with posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and major

Psychological well-being, PTSD, and their associations with eating disturbances in U.S. Veterans.

Trauma is associated with disordered eating in many populations. Military personnel, a population with strict focus on maintaining body condition, experience traumatic events at a higher rate than civilian populations; however, little is known about the relationship between trauma and eating disturbances among service members and Veterans. This analysis evaluated the association between posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) diagnosis and eating disturbances in a sample of postdeployment Veterans. The effect of potential confounding (e.g., age, sex, body mass index) and protective factors (posit

Posttraumatic Stress Disorder and Dissociation in a Clinical Sample of Refugees in the Netherlands: Evidence for a Dissociative Subtype.

An increasing number of studies have been investigating the co-occurrence of posttraumatic symptoms and dissociation in trauma-exposed samples. As traumatized refugees are particularly susceptible to developing posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), the aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between PTSD and dissociation in a traumatized refugee sample. Cross-sectional data from a clinical refugee sample (N = 526) were collected. Latent class analysis (LCA) examined different classes of PTSD, based on the Clinician Administered PTSD Scale for DSM-5 (CAPS-5) items. Subsequently, i

Functional Relationships of Binge Drinking and Alcohol-Related Problems With Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms in a Pilot Sample of Veterans.

OBJECTIVE: Posttraumatic stress (PTS) symptoms and problematic alcohol use (e.g., binge drinking and alcohol-related problems; ARP) commonly co-occur following stressors and traumatic events. Ecological momentary assessment methods can clarify the functional relationships between these conditions. METHODS: Twenty-five trauma-exposed combat veterans with pre-pandemic heavy drinking histories completed three daily smartphone surveys for four weeks, assessing binge drinking, ARP, PTS symptoms, and positive and negative affect. Within-person multi-level models assessed PTS and alcohol relationshi

An examination of the relationship between psychopathology and the sociodemographic, clinical, and abuse characteristics in children who have experienced sexual abuse.

BACKGROUND: Sexual abuse in children can have significant long-term psychiatric consequences. The type of abuse (penetrative vs. non-penetrative) and the relationship to the perpetrator, including incest, may influence these outcomes. OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study was to examine the sociodemographic and clinical characteristics of children who have experienced sexual abuse, the types of abuse they were exposed to, and to evaluate the psychiatric effects of these experiences. PARTICIPANTS AND SETTING: The study included 90 children who were referred to the Istanbul Forensic Medicine Instit

Network analysis of PTSD symptoms following childbirth and comorbid conditions among women with sexual trauma history.

PURPOSE: Women with a history of sexual trauma (ST) have heightened risk for postpartum psychopathology. Although ST increases risk for traumatic delivery and maternal psychopathology, knowledge of the functional connections among various psychiatric symptoms and complicated delivery remains limited. METHODS: We used regularized partial correlation networks to examine connections between symptoms of childbirth-related PTSD (CB-PTSD), depression, anxiety, somatization, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and complicated delivery (e.g., presence of obstetric complications, preterm birth, advanced ma

Evaluating the Relationship Between Emotion Regulation, Mood and Distressing Dreams Using Daily Sleep Diary Reports in Trauma Survivors.

Posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) is a debilitating psychiatric condition that affects approximately 6% of the US population, with even higher rates among veterans. Sleep disturbances (e.g., distressing dreams) are among the most reported symptoms in individuals with PTSD. Distressing dreams (sometimes referred to as nightmares) have been associated with significant negative mental health outcomes, such as suicide. Therefore, understanding factors that contribute to or mitigate the risk of experiencing distressing dreams is critical for improving mental health in people with PTSD. The curre

Posttraumatic Stress Symptoms Relate to Acquired Suicide Capability Through Dissociation and Alcohol Use in the National Guard.

INTRODUCTION: National Guard members face unique challenges of psychological trauma and rapid transitions between military and civilian life. These challenges may partially explain Guard members' increased likelihood of developing Posttraumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) and higher suicide rates compared to other military and civilian populations. These challenges may prompt the use of dissociation and alcohol to cope, which can exacerbate PTSD symptoms and increase tolerance of painful experiences, such as suicide. Despite these connections, the interplay among dissociation, alcohol, PTSD symptom
