Clinical Outcomes for Open Hip Abductor Repair Using Tenodesis and Bone Trough Repair Techniques.

BACKGROUND: Hip abductor complex tears remain an injury without a clear consensus on management. Surgical treatment has been recommended aft … CONCLUSION: Our study shows improvement in pain and function after surgical repair of hip abductor tendon injuries in both simple and complex tears. This improvement is seen even during ongoing surgical site healing. Magnetic resonance imaging findings may remain abnormal for more than 1 year after surgery and do not clearly denote repair failure.

Humeral elevation workspace during daily life of adults with spinal cord injury who use a manual wheelchair compared to age and sex matched able-bodied controls.

Shoulder pain and pathology are extremely common for individuals with spinal cord injuries (SCI) who use manual wheelchairs (MWC). Although risky humeral kinematics have been measured during wheelchair-based activities performed in the lab, little is known about arm kinematics in the free-living environment. The purpose of this study was to measure the humeral elevation workspace throughout a typical day for individuals with SCI who use a MWC and matched able-bodied controls. Thirty-four individuals with SCI who use a MWC (42.7±12.7 years of age, 28 males/6 females, C6-L1) and 34 age-and sex-m

Immobilization leads to reduced stretch reflexes but increased central reflex gain in the rat.

Plastic adaptations are known to take place in muscles, tendons, joints, and the nervous system in response to changes in muscle activity. However, few studies have addressed how these plastic adaptations are related. Thus this study focuses on changes in the mechanical properties of the ankle plantarflexor muscle-tendon unit, stretch reflex activity, and spinal neuronal pathways in relation to cast immobilization. The left rat hindlimb from toes to hip was immobilized with a plaster cast for 1, 2, 4, or 8 wk followed by acute electrophysiological recordings to investigate muscle stiffness and

A Review of Injury Patterns in Athletes Competing in Combined Competitions: Heptathlon and Decathlon.

Decathlon and heptathlon, the flagship events in the category of "combined events" within the sport of track and field, are contested by athletes possessing skill and talent in running, jumping, and throwing. The athleticism required to excel in decathlon and heptathlon has led to the unofficial recognition of the Olympic champions in these events, as "the greatest athletes in the world." The diversity of training and the intense demands of competition place these athletes at risk for a variety of injuries. The team physician or event physician must be knowledgeable about this unique group of

Injuries of the fingers and thumb in the athlete.

Injuries of the fingers and thumb in the athlete are common. Mallet finger, jersey finger, boutonniere deformity, Bennett and Rolando fractures, and gamekeeper's thumb are just a few of the injuries that can occur in athletes. A thorough understanding of the mechanism of injury, osseous and soft tissue abnormalities, imaging features, and treatment is important in the care of athletes. Prompt and accurate diagnosis is important and may help minimize outcomes of malunion, posttraumatic arthritis, and debility.
