Increased amygdala activation during mania: a functional magnetic resonance imaging study.

OBJECTIVE: This study sought to investigate neural activity in the amygdala during episodes of mania. METHOD: Nine manic subjects and nine healthy comparison subjects underwent functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) while performing a neuropsychological paradigm known to activate the amygdala. Subjects viewed faces displaying affect (experimental task) and geometric forms (control task) and matched them to one of two simultaneously presented similar images. RESULTS: Manic subjects had significantly increased activation in the left amygdala and reduced bilateral activation in the latera

Verbal dichotic listening and manual performance in children with congenital unilateral brain lesions.

The authors assessed manual performance and verbal dichotic listening performance in 16 epilepsy-free children with congenital unilateral brain lesions and normal IQ to investigate cerebral reorganization. In all children, the paretic hand had fair grip function, but reaction times were impaired, and cerebral reorganization of hand function in those with right hemiplegia was shown by the high incidence of pathological left-handedness. The dichotic listening results showed that most children with left lesions had a left ear advantage significantly related to the extent of brain damage. This fin

2-buten-4-olide, an endogenous feeding suppressant, improves spatial performance through brain acidic fibroblast growth factor in mice.

Endogenous sugar acid 2-buten-4-olide, a satiety substance, has been shown to increase the blood glucose, norepinephrine, and glucocorticoid concentrations that are known to modulate learning and memory processes. The glucose-induced release of acidic fibroblast growth factor facilitated the hippocampus-dependent memory function. In the present study, we investigated the effect of 2-buten-4-olide on the spatial performance of male DDY mice undergoing the water maze task. The intraperitoneal injection of 2-buten-4-olide (5 mg/kg) facilitated the spatial performance, which was indicated by a red

Contrasting effects of letter-spacing in alexia: further evidence that different strategies generate word length effects in reading.

The reading behaviour of two alexic patients (SA and WH) is reported. Both patients are severely impaired at reading single words, and both show abnormally strong effects of word length when reading. These two symptoms are characteristic of letter-by-letter reading. Experiment 1 examined the pattern of errors when the patients read large and small words. Further experiments examined the effects of inter-letter spacing on word naming (Experiments 2a and 2b) and the identification of letters in letter strings (Experiment 3). For both patients, letter identification was better for widely spaced l

A comparison of brainstem auditory evoked responses evoked by rarefaction and condensation stimulation in control subjects and in patients with Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome and multiple sclerosis.

Brainstem auditory evoked responses (BAER) evoked by rarefaction and condensation stimulation were compared in patients with Wernicke-Korsakoff syndrome (WKS) and multiple sclerosis (MS) and click polarity-related differences in topodiagnosis were found in 24% of the WKS and 40% of the MS patients. These results suggest the need to record BAER routinely with both stimulus polarities separately if practicable. BAER from rarefaction and condensation stimulation were recorded from control subjects of both sexes to provide control data for the patient study and also to investigate the interaction

Rod-cone interactions and analysis of retinal disease.

Cone flicker threshold rises as the rods dark adapt, though the cone threshold to continuous light remains constant. The rise is normally about 1 log unit, but in certain patients who complain of night blindness it may be as great as 2.5 log units. In these persons the kinetics of the rod-cone interaction are those of the recovery of rod sensitivity. The rods impose a low-pass filter on the cones. This effect is absent in congenital nyctalopia and X-linked retinoschisis. We suggest that cone flicker is maintained through a feedback system involving horizontal cells, and when the rod dark curre

Long-term learning deficits of mentally retarded monkeys.

During the first year of life, 12 rhesus monkeys were either subjected to diets high in phenylalanine or para-chlorophenylalanine either pre- or postpartum, leading to a condition similar to phenylketonuria (PKU); 12 other rhesus monkeys were controls. After removal from the PKU diets and return to normal diets for a period of 2 years, subjects were tested for learning ability on an extensive series of tasks. No support was found for suggestions that PKU monkeys (a) do worse if task difficulty is increased, (b) are less affected by negative reinforcement, (c) have an attentional or short-term

Does the physical food environment in secondary school influence students' social norm perceptions regarding healthy dietary choices? - An exploratory study in the Netherlands.

Creating a healthy food environment in secondary schools has the potential to communicate social norms regarding healthy dietary choices. This study explored the relationship between the schools' food environment and perceived descriptive (what others do) and injunctive (what others approve) norms regarding healthy dietary choices among adolescents. An exploratory (quasi-experimental) study was conducted in 23 Dutch schools, differing between three arms based on implementation degree of a Healthy School Canteen Program: limited, moderate or sustainable. Students (n = 1004) completed a question

Stepping outside the clinic walls: health professionals' encounters with place during the COVID-19 pandemic.

BACKGROUND AND AIM: While existing literature has largely examined healthcare delivery within hospitals during the COVID-19 pandemic, this study extends the inquiry to the spatial dimensions of public health work in urban settings. It explores the experiences of health professionals engaged in home-based contact tracing in Türkiye, focusing on their perceptions of social determinants of health through place. METHODS: Semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions were conducted with 45 health professionals from socioeconomically diverse districts in Istanbul, between July 2021 and Sept

Sociodemographic factors and career growth as determinants of staff retention among nurses in a military hospital in Saudi Arabia.

Nurses are the backbone of healthcare systems, and their retention remains a critical global challenge, as high attrition leads to a loss of expertise, continuity of care, and patient trust. The main objective of this study is to examine whether sociodemographic factors and career growth act as determinants of staff retention among nurses working in a military hospital in Saudi Arabia. A cross-sectional analytic study was conducted among nurses employed at an Armed Forces Hospital in Saudi Arabia over a 3-month period between June and August 2025. Data were collected using an online self-admin

Effectiveness of a Theory-Informed Antimicrobial Stewardship Educational Intervention in Pharmacy Students: A Stepped-Wedge Study.

BACKGROUND: Developing antimicrobial stewardship (AMS) competencies is an essential priority in pharmacy education. However, stewardship training in many curricula remains largely knowledge-based, with limited implementation of theory-informed learning strategies and longitudinal competency evaluation. The objective of this study is to evaluate the effectiveness of a theory-informed, multicomponent Digital Antimicrobial Stewardship Education Intervention (DASEI) in improving AMS-related knowledge, clinical reasoning, perceptions, and attitudes among undergraduate pharmacy students. METHODS: A

Oncology Education in Undergraduate Medical Students: A Cross-Sectional Comparison of Expectations and Perceptions Between First- and Sixth-Year Cohorts.

Cancer is projected to become the leading cause of death in Brazil within the next decade. Despite this growing burden, oncology education remains inconsistently structured in undergraduate medical curricula, potentially limiting physicians’ preparedness for cancer care. To compare expectations and perceptions of oncology education between independent cohorts of first- and sixth-year medical students and to assess whether academic stage is independently associated with perceived preparedness and interest in oncology careers. A cross-sectional study was conducted using structured questionnaires

Why physicians underuse patient-reported outcomes in atopic dermatitis and chronic urticaria - Insights from the UCARE/ADCARE PROMUSE study.

BACKGROUND: The recently published PROMUSE study performed by the GA2LEN UCARE (Urticaria Centers of Reference and Excellence) and ADCARE (Angioedema Centers of Reference and Excellence) networks found that patient-reported outcome measures (PROMs) are underused in clinical practice for atopic dermatitis (AD) and chronic urticaria (CU). The reasons for this remain unknown. We studied why physicians have reservations about using PROMs, how PROM use is affected by the barriers they perceive, and what the physician demographics/characteristics associated with these barriers are. METHODS: This is

Multisource Sensor Fusion and Large Language Model Integration for Explainable State Perception and Anomaly Awareness.

With the rapid development of intelligent sensing systems, digital monitoring platforms, and multisource data acquisition technologies, accurate identification of operational states and potential risks from heterogeneous sensing signals has become an important research issue in artificial intelligence-driven sensing. Existing studies have primarily focused on either textual information understanding or behavioral data analysis, with limited attention paid to jointly modeling the consistency between textual declarations and executed behaviors. As a result, many potential risks that have not yet

Reciprocal Relationships Between Perceived Teachers' Moral Grandstanding, Self-Esteem, and Rumination Among Chinese Primary School Students: An RI-CLPM Study.

Moral grandstanding is the use of moral talk driven by egotistical motives to promote oneself or display moral superiority. Although moral grandstanding has been extensively examined in political and public health contexts, its relevance to educational settings remains understudied, especially in teacher-student interactions where teachers serve as moral authorities for children. The present research adapted the Perceived Teachers' Moral Grandstanding Scale and examined its longitudinal associations with students' socioemotional processes. In the first step, the Moral Grandstanding Motivation
