Cancer burden in Europe: a systematic analysis of the GLOBOCAN database (2022).

BackgroundCancer remains a significant public health challenge in Europe, with substantial regional disparities in incidence, mortality, and access to healthcare. This study analyses cancer patterns across Eastern, Northern, Southern, and Western Europe in 2022, highlighting key public health implications and gaps in prevention and treatment.MethodsUsing data from GLOBOCAN 2022, this study assessed total new cancer cases, age-standardized incidence and mortality rates (ASRs) per 100,000, and cumulative cancer risk at age 75. The top three cancers by sex and region were also analysed to identif

Alcohol Misuse in Older Women: A Scoping Review of Correlates, Consequences, Treatment, and Prevention.

BackgroundAlcohol use and alcohol use disorder (AUD) among older women (defined as age 50 and over) have increased substantially in recent years. Compared to men and younger women, older women negotiate biopsychosocial transitions that put them at greater risk of alcohol-related health conditions as they age and are less reliably screened and treated for heavy alcohol use and AUD.ObjectivesThis scoping review represents a critical evaluation of research methodology and findings since 2004 on biopsychosocial correlates and consequences of alcohol misuse (i.e., heavy alcohol use, defined as four

Новые знания о генетической основе и транскриптомном освещении вирулентности в вариантах Pseudomonas shiringae pv. actinidiae.

Preventive Healthcare and Management for Acute Lymphoblastic Leukaemia in Adults: Case Report and Literature Review.

Acute lymphoblastic leukaemia (ALL) is diagnosed by the presence of at least 20% lymphoblasts in the bone marrow. ALL may be aggressive and include the lymph nodes, liver, spleen, central nervous system (CNS), and other organs. Without early recognition and timely treatment, ALL will progress quickly and may have poor prognosis in clinical scenarios. ALL is a rare type of leukaemia in adults but is the most common type in children. Precipitating factors such as environmental radiation or chemical exposure, viral infection, and genetic factors can be associated with ALL. We report a rare case o

The global, regional, and national burden of cancer, 1990-2023, with forecasts to 2050: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2023.

BACKGROUND: Cancer is a leading cause of death globally. Accurate cancer burden information is crucial for policy planning, but many countries do not have up-to-date cancer surveillance data. To inform global cancer-control efforts, we used the Global Burden of Diseases, Injuries, and Risk Factors Study (GBD) 2023 framework to generate and analyse estimates of cancer burden for 47 cancer types or groupings by age, sex, and 204 countries and territories from 1990 to 2023, cancer burden attributable to selected risk factors from 1990 to 2023, and forecasted cancer burden up to 2050. METHODS: Ca

Risk Factors for Adverse Outcomes in Cancer Patients With Sepsis.

BACKGROUND: Cancer and its various treatment modalities increase susceptibility to the development of sepsis. Because of the complex relationship between sepsis and cancer, we aimed to study the differences in risk factors and outcomes of sepsis in patients with cancer (SCa) compared to patients without cancer (SnoCa). METHODS: A retrospective cohort analysis of all adult patients who received care for sepsis in an urban tertiary healthcare center was conducted. Risk factors and outcomes were compared between the SCa and SnoCa groups. RESULTS: SCa group (n = 310) was older than SnoCa group (

Cancer health disparities in racial/ethnic minorities in the United States.

There are well-established disparities in cancer incidence and outcomes by race/ethnicity that result from the interplay between structural, socioeconomic, socio-environmental, behavioural and biological factors. However, large research studies designed to investigate factors contributing to cancer aetiology and progression have mainly focused on populations of European origin. The limitations in clinicopathological and genetic data, as well as the reduced availability of biospecimens from diverse populations, contribute to the knowledge gap and have the potential to widen cancer health dispar

A multicountry ecological study of cancer incidence rates in 2008 with respect to various risk-modifying factors.

Observational and ecological studies are generally used to determine the presence of effect of cancer risk-modifying factors. Researchers generally agree that environmental factors such as smoking, alcohol consumption, poor diet, lack of physical activity, and low serum 25-hdyroxyvitamin D levels are important cancer risk factors. This ecological study used age-adjusted incidence rates for 21 cancers for 157 countries (87 with high-quality data) in 2008 with respect to dietary supply and other factors, including per capita gross domestic product, life expectancy, lung cancer incidence rate (an

Decoding Cancer Risk: Understanding Gene-Environment Interactions in Cancer Development.

While lifestyle choices or behavioral patterns remain the most significant factors influencing cancer risk, environmental exposure to certain chemicals, both manufactured and natural, may also contribute to an individual's likelihood of developing cancer. This interplay of factors, coupled with an aging demographic and shifting lifestyle patterns, has led to an increasing prevalence of cancer in recent years. This study examines the environmental and behavioral factors that contribute to anomalies in the immune system and increase the risk of developing cancer. Significant environmental and oc

COVID-19 in Patients With Hematologic Malignancies: A Single Center Retrospective Study.

Initial studies that described the novel coronavirus (COVID-19) reported increased morbidity and mortality in patients with cancer. Of this group, patients with hematologic malignancies (HM) had the highest disease severity and death rates. Subsequent studies have attempted to better describe how COVID-19 affects patients with HM. However, these studies have yielded variable and often contradictory results. We present our single-institution experience with patients with HM who were diagnosed with COVID-19 from March 2020 to March 2021. We report 62 total cases with 10 patients who died during

Global Cancer Inequalities.

Social inequalities in cancer are increasingly relevant to research, implementation science, and policy. In this brief perspective we provide an overview of global cancer inequalities by assessing different outcomes according to the Human Development Index (HDI); the HDI is a United Nations Development Programme composite indicator including the following measures: (i) access to education (based on mean and expected years of schooling), (ii) a long and healthy life (based on life expectancy), and (iii) a decent standard of living (based on gross national income per capita). We additionally tou

National burden of cancer in Italy, 1990-2017: a systematic analysis for the global burden of disease study 2017.

We monitored the burden of cancer in Italy and its trends over the last three decades, providing estimates of cancer incidence, mortality, years of life lost, years lived with disability, and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs), for cancer overall and 30 cancer sites using data from the Global Burden of Disease study 2017. An overview of mortality trends between 1990 and 2017 was also provided. In 2017, there were 254,336 new cancer cases in men and 214,994 in women, corresponding to an age-standardized incidence rate (ASIR) of 438 and 330/100,000, respectively. Between 1990 and 2017, incid

Biological and clinical aspects of HPV-related cancers.

Cancer-related diseases represent the second overall cause of death worldwide. Human papilloma virus (HPV) is an infectious agent which is mainly sexually transmitted and may lead to HPV-associated cancers in both men and women. Almost all cervical cancers are HPV-associated, however, an increasing number of head and neck cancers (HNCs), especially oropharyngeal cancer, can be linked to HPV infection. Moreover, anogenital cancers, including vaginal, vulvar, penial, and anal cancers, represent a subset of HPV-related cancers. Whereas testing and prevention of cervical cancer have significantly

Demographic shift disproportionately increases cancer burden in an aging nation: current and expected incidence and mortality in Hungary up to 2030.

BACKGROUND: Population aging is a common demographic pattern in developed countries, and aging increases the risk of cancer. The disproportionately high cancer burden, as a consequence, is especially pronounced in Central and Eastern European countries, including Hungary. METHODS: We summarized current and projected future cancer incidences and mortalities utilizing data from the last two decades. Predictions are based on cancer incidence and mortality collected between 1996 and 2015 in Hungary. In addition to the crude rates, data were age standardized to the European standard population (ES
