Combining ultrasound-assisted extraction and vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction for the sensitive assessment of aflatoxins in aquaculture fish species.

Although aflatoxins contamination in feedstuff is a well-known problem, and hence these residues are controlled in poultry products, there is scarce information regarding the presence of these toxic substances in aquaculture fish, facilities that use several feedstuff for fish breeding. A simple, rapid, and sensitive method has been therefore developed for aflatoxins (B1, B2, G1, and G2) assessment in aquaculture products by combining ultrasound probe-assisted extraction and vortex-assisted liquid-liquid microextraction as a sample pretreatment, and high-performance liquid chromatography-tande

Effect of Electroconvulsive Therapy on Anxiety in Linear and Non-Linear Rats with Depressive-Like Disorders Induced by Ultrasound Stimulation.

We performed a comparative study of the effect of electroconvulsive therapy on anxiety in outbred rats and Sprague-Dawley rats with depressive-like disorder induced by exposure to ultrasound of variable frequency (20-45 Hz). The anxiogenic effect of therapy was revealed in elevated plus maze and open-field tests in both linear and non-lineal rats, but was more pronounced in linear animals. Differences between outbred rats and Sprague-Dawley rats by the anxiety level were demonstrated. These results suggest that electroconvulsive therapy should be used with cautious in patients with depression

Is Deep Brain Stimulation still an option for tremor recurrence after Focused Ultrasound thalamotomy? A case report.

With the development of MRI-guided focused ultrasound (FUS), there is an ongoing renewal of interest for ablative procedures as a surgical option for tremor disorders. One of the main criticisms regarding FUS thalamotomy is the potential recurrence of tremor symptoms during follow-up. In case of tremor reappearance, repeating the ultrasound ablation may represent a reasonable option. However, tremor is often perceived as a highly disabling condition and patients may be reluctant to undergo the same unsuccessful treatment again. In this context, few data are available about the feasibility of D

Robotically Assisted Sonic Therapy (RAST) for Noninvasive Hepatic Ablation in a Porcine Model: Mitigation of Body Wall Damage with a Modified Pulse Sequence.

PURPOSE: Robotically assisted sonic therapy (RAST) is a nonthermal, noninvasive ablation method based on histotripsy. Prior animal studies have demonstrated the ability to create hepatic ablation zones at the focal point of an ultrasound therapy transducer; however, these treatments resulted in thermal damage to the body wall within the path of ultrasound energy delivery. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of a pulse sequence intended to mitigate prefocal body wall injury. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Healthy swine (n = 6) underwent hepatic RAST (VortxRx software vers

Nursing Management of the Patient Undergoing Focused Ultrasound: A New Treatment Option for Essential Tremor.

Essential tremor (ET) is among the most common neurological movement disorders that causes postural or action tremors, with an estimated prevalence nationwide of less than 3% of the population. The incidence of ET increases with age but often affects younger adults and has a familial trait association. Depending on disease progression, ET can cause significant limitations for individuals, in many cases, significantly limiting their ability to perform activities of daily living and occupational responsibilities. Until recently, treatment of ET heavily relied on medication management and invasiv

An innovative ultrasound assisted extraction micro-scale cell combined with gas chromatography/mass spectrometry in negative chemical ionization to determine persistent organic pollutants in air particulate matter.

New clean technologies are needed to determine concentration of organic pollutants without generating more pollution. A method to extract Persistent Organic Pollutants (POPs) from airborne particulate matter was developed using a novel technology recently patented called ultrasound assisted extraction micro-scale cell (UAE-MSC). This technology extracts, filters, collects the sample, and evaporates the solvent, on-line. No sample transfer is needed. The cell minimizes sample manipulation, solvent consumption, waste generation, time, and energy; fulfilling most of the analytical green chemistry

Minimizing antibody cross-reactivity in multiplex detection of biomarkers in paper-based point-of-care assays.

Highly multiplexed immunoassays could allow convenient screening of hundreds or thousands of protein biomarkers simultaneously in a clinical sample such as serum or plasma, potentially allowing improved diagnostic accuracy and clinical management of many conditions such as autoimmune disorders, infections, and several cancers. Currently, antibody microarray-based tests are limited in part due to cross reactivity from detection antibody reagents. Here we present a strategy that reduces the cross-reactivity between nanoparticle-bound reporter antibodies through the application of ultrasound ener

Friesian horses as a possible model for human acquired aortopulmonary fistulation.

BACKGROUND: Acquired aortopulmonary fistulation is a rare condition in humans. It usually results as a late complication of a true or pseudoaneurysm of the thoracic aorta. It is most commonly associated with trauma or surgery, less commonly with atherosclerosis, inflammation, hypertension or Marfan's syndrome. Aortopulmonary fistulation is also seen as a rare complication of acute aortic dissection. On rare occasions, acquired aortopulmonary fistulation is reported in aged patients without any of the above mentioned triggering factors. Thus, these cases should be considered as idiopathic aorto

Surgical interventions for high-grade vulval intraepithelial neoplasia.

BACKGROUND: This is an updated version of an original Cochrane review published in The Cochrane Library, 2011, Issue 1.Vulval intraepithelial neoplasia (VIN) is a pre-malignant condition of the vulval skin. This uncommon chronic skin condition of the vulva is associated with a high risk of recurrence and the potential to progress to vulval cancer. The condition is complicated by its multicentric and multifocal nature. The incidence of this condition appears to be rising, particularly in the younger age group. There is a lack of consensus on the optimal surgical treatment method. However, the r

Case study: shock waves treatment of diabetic gangrene.

This case study illustrates the option of treating poorly healing diabetic wounds with shock waves. A case study was performed with a 75-year-old male patient with diabetic gangrene of both feet facing the prospect of imminent amputation. On a visual analogue pain scale (0-10), the patient reported a pain score of between 7 and 9. In the past, focused shock waves have been used to successfully treat poorly healing wounds and in this case are adopted for the treatment of severe peripheral arterial occlusive disease. Over a time interval of nearly a year, 11 treatments were delivered. At the end
