Maternal group B streptococcal (GBS) genital tract colonization at term in women who have asymptomatic GBS bacteriuria.

OBJECTIVE: To determine the rate of positive group B streptococcus (GBS) cultures at 35-37 weeks gestation in women who have first trimester asymptomatic GBS bacteriuria. METHODS: Pregnant women with asymptomatic first trimester GBS bacteriuria had genital cultures for GBS performed at 35-37 weeks gestational age. Serotyping was performed by the standard Lancefield capillary precipitin method. RESULTS: Fifty-three women with positive urine cultures had genital cultures performed at 35-37 weeks. Sixteen of the 53 (30.2%; 95% confidence interval: 18.4-44.3%) third trimester vaginal cultures we

Por La Vida model intervention enhances use of cancer screening tests among Latinas.

OBJECTIVE: To describe the short-term impact of the intervention known as Por La Vida (PLV) on cancer screening for Latinas in San Diego, California. METHODS: Thirty-six lay community workers (consejeras) were recruited and trained to conduct educational group sessions. Each consejera recruited approximately 14 peers from the community to participate in the program. The consejeras were randomly assigned to either a twelve-week cancer screening intervention group or a control group in which they participated in an equally engaging program entitled "Community Living Skills." Community level cancer control in a Texas barrio: Part I--Theoretical basis, implementation, and process evaluation.

A theory-based program that used peer modeling and a network of peer communicators to promote breast and cervical cancer screening was designed and implemented in a barrio of San Antonio with a population of approximately 25,000 adult women. The implementation process was evaluated and documented through field notes, archival documents, content analyses, interviews, surveys, etc. Over a 21-month period, a total of 156 new stories and a network for distribution of more than 80,000 print pieces carried messages about positive role models who were receiving Pap smears and mammograms. A group of 8

Characteristics of women by smoking status in the San Francisco Bay Area.

To better understand why smokers are more likely to develop cervical cancer than nonsmokers, we investigated laboratory and demographic differences between the two groups. Women between the ages of 18 and 49 who attended eleven community clinics in the San Francisco Bay Area were studied to investigate differences between smokers and nonsmokers. The 332 smokers and 365 nonsmokers were queried about smoking habits, sexual and reproductive history, and recent diet. Cervical mucus specimens were cultured for yeast, lactobacillus, and other microorganisms. Results showed that white Hispanic women

HPV self-sampling acceptability in rural and indigenous communities in Guatemala: a cross-sectional study.

INTRODUCTION: Cervical cancer disproportionately burdens low-income and middle-income countries (LMICs) such as Guatemala. Self-collection testing for human papillomavirus (HPV) has been suggested as a form of cervical cancer screening to facilitate access in LMICs. This study assessed and compared the acceptability of self-collection HPV testing in two rural, indigenous and ethnically distinct communities in Guatemala: Santiago Atitlán, Sololá and Livingston, Izabal. METHODS: All participants, women between the ages of 18 and 60, completed a questionnaire. Eligible participants were also ask

Knowledge of, and beliefs about, access to screening facilities and cervical cancer screening behaviors among low-income women in New Jersey.

Racial/ethnic disparities in cancer outcomes have been well documented. Access to Pap testing may account for some of the variation in the racial and socioeconomic differences in cervical cancer outcomes. Literature exploring perceived access to care as it relates to women of color and low-income women is lacking. The goal of the study was to evaluate and characterize the relationship between what respondents believe about access to free/low-cost screening facilities and screening behaviors among low-income women in New Jersey. We used multivariate logistic regression to investigate belief abo

Uptake of breast and cervical cancer screening in four Gulf Cooperation Council countries.

In Gulf Cooperation Council States, there is limited information on national levels of mammography and Pap smear screening uptake. The aim of this study is to provide a baseline for national estimates for mammography and Pap smear screening and to explore associations between screening uptake and socioeconomic factors. The nationally representative World Health Survey Plus, implemented in 2008/2009 in Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia and United Arab Emirates (UAE), was used. Uptake of mammography and Pap smear was estimated for each country, followed by the examination of associations between screen

Acceptability and Feasibility of Community-Based, Lay Navigator-Facilitated At-Home Self-Collection for Human Papillomavirus Testing in Underscreened Women.

Objective: Women without regular health care providers or a medical home routinely fail to complete recommended cervical cancer screening. At-home self-collection of samples to test for high-risk strains of human papillomavirus (hrHPV) can improve screening rates. This study documents acceptability and feasibility of community lay navigator (LN)-facilitated at-home self-collection for underscreened women in Appalachian Virginia. Materials and Methods: This study used mixed methods in three phases. Phase I involved focus groups of LNs to ensure cultural acceptability of self-collection, and to

Are smokers less likely to seek preventive healthcare measures in Italy?

Smoking cessation is the key cancer and cardiovascular disease (CVD) prevention action for smokers; however, smokers can still benefit from earlier diagnosis. This study aims to investigate behaviours towards cancer and CVD prevention by smoking habits in Italy. The study relies on data from a large Italian population-based survey carried out in 2013 on a sample of 119 073 individuals. We studied the relationship between smoking habits and the participation in cancer (cervical, breast and colorectal) screening programmes, or CVD prevention (performing cholesterol, blood pressure and glycaemia

Impact of Implementing 100% Rapid Review as a Quality Control Tool in Cervical Cytology.

OBJECTIVE: We aimed to evaluate the impact of implementing 100% rapid review (100% RR) as a quality control tool in cervical smear cytology. DESIGN: A cross-sectional study was conducted in which cytology findings, false-negative results, and quality indicators were evaluated. The variables were analyzed in 2004, the year in which 100% RR was implemented, and again in 2013, i.e., 10 years on. RESULTS: Detection of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance (ASC-US) increased from 0.90% in 2004 to 2.47% in 2013 by routine screening. Detection of atypical squamous cells, cannot exclu

Diagnostic and Treatment Reproducibility of Cervical Intraepithelial Neoplasia / Squamous Intraepithelial Lesion and Factors Affecting the Diagnosis.

OBJECTIVE: Inter-observer differences in the diagnosis of HPV related cervical lesions are problematic and response of gynecologists to these diagnostic entities is non-standardized. This study evaluated the diagnostic reproducibility of "cervical intraepithelial neoplasia" (CIN) and "squamous intraepithelial lesion" (SIL) diagnoses. MATERIAL AND METHOD: 19 pathologists evaluated 66 cases once using H&E slides and once with immunohistochemical studies (p16, Ki-67 and Pro-ExC). Management response to diagnoses was evaluated amongst 12 gynecologists. Pathologists and gynecologists were also giv

HIV primary care by the infectious disease physician in the United States - extending the continuum of care.

Models of care for people living with HIV (PLWH) have varied over time due to long term survival, development of HIV-associated non-AIDS conditions, and HIV specific primary care guidelines that differ from those of the general population. The objectives of this study are to assess how often infectious disease (ID) physicians provide primary care for PLWH, assess their practice patterns and barriers in the provision of primary care. We used a 6-item survey electronically distributed to ID physician members of Emerging Infections Network (EIN). Of the 1248 active EIN members, 644 (52%) responde
