In recent years, attacks by piranhas have become a common problem in dammed portions of rivers and streams in the State of Sao Paulo, Southeastern Brazil. In two outbreaks recorded in two neighboring counties in the Northwest region of the state, 74 bathers were bitten. Only one bite per person was recorded during a short period of the year. Streptococcus agalactiae infective endocarditis Streptococcus agalactiae is an unusual cause of infectious endocarditis. We describe the clinical characteristics, therapy and evolution of this infection in four patients diagnosed between 1996 and 2003. All four cases had native valve involvement and vegetations. Endocarditis due to Pasteurella pneumotropica are very rarely described. We report a new case of bacterial endocarditis in a 43 years-old patient with mitral stenosis. An asporogenous spontaneous mutant of Streptomyces aureofaciens named ASR1 was selected on streptomycin gradient plates. The mutant is very stable and differs in ultrastructure and morphology, it is prototrophic but it lost the ability to grow well on soybean extract medium and produces one-tenth tetracyclines of the parent.
