The crossroads of ocular inflammation and inherited retinal degenerations: a report of two cases.

We describe the clinical and molecular diagnostic overlap between posterior uveitis and inherited retinal diseases (IRDs) in 2 cases of PRPF31 retinitis pigmentosa (RP) presenting with features of posterior uveitis. Both patients with PRPF31 retinopathy had typical inflammatory clinical features of anterior chamber (AC) cells, vitritis, retinal vasculitis, and cystoid macular edema (CME), which was resistant to carbonic anhydrase inhibitors, systemic steroids, and antimetabolites but eventually responded to intraocular fluocinolone implant. This improvement with local corticosteroids in these

Machine learning reveals prominent spontaneous behavioral changes and treatment efficacy in humanized and transgenic Alzheimer's disease models.

Computer-vision and machine-learning (ML) approaches are being developed to provide scalable, unbiased, and sensitive methods to assess mouse behavior. Here, we used the ML-based variational animal motion embedding (VAME) segmentation platform to assess spontaneous behavior in humanized App knockin and transgenic APP models of Alzheimer's disease (AD) and to test the role of AD-related neuroinflammation in these behavioral manifestations. We found marked alterations in spontaneous behavior in AppNL-G-F and 5xFAD mice, including age-dependent changes in motif utilization, disorganized behaviora

Intelligent Evaluation Method for Scoliosis at Home Using Back Photos Captured by Mobile Phones.

The traditional scoliosis examination based on X-ray film is not suitable for large-scale screening, and it is also not suitable for dynamic evaluation during rehabilitation. Therefore, based on computer vision technology, this paper puts forward an evaluation method of scoliosis with different photos of the back taken by mobile phones, which involves three aspects: first, based on the key point detection model of YOLOv8, an algorithm for judging the type of spinal coronal curvature is proposed; second, an algorithm for evaluating the coronal plane of the spine based on the key points of the h

Amyloidosis Localized to the Sinonasal Tract: From the Diagnosis to Management of Disease.

Amyloidosis is a mainly systemic rare disease and its localized presentation is even less frequent. Systemic forms are often associated with other conditions or entities (such as neoplasms), and a correct etiological study of patients with this disease is essential. A localized presentation has a better prognosis compared to systemic forms, which underlines the importance of a correct diagnosis. Primary localized amyloidosis in the head and neck region is a rare entity. Primary amyloidosis localized to the sinonasal tract is extremely rare. Although uncommon, case reports have been increasing

Isolation of Primary Mouse Retinal Pigmented Epithelium Cells.

The retinal pigmented epithelium (RPE) layer lies immediately behind the photoreceptors and harbors a complex metabolic system that plays several critical roles in maintaining the photoreceptors' function. Thus, the RPE structure and function are essential to sustain normal vision. This manuscript presents an established protocol for primary mouse RPE cell isolation. RPE isolation is a great tool to investigate the molecular mechanisms underlying RPE pathology in the different mouse models of ocular disorders. Furthermore, RPE isolation can help in comparing primary mouse RPE cells isolated fr

An Effective Method for Detecting and Classifying Diabetic Retinopathy Lesions Based on Deep Learning.

Diabetic retinopathy occurs as a result of the harmful effects of diabetes on the eyes. Diabetic retinopathy is also a disease that should be diagnosed early. If not treated early, vision loss may occur. It is estimated that one third of more than half a million diabetic patients will have diabetic retinopathy by the 22nd century. Many effective methods have been proposed for disease detection with deep learning. In this study, unlike other studies, a deep learning-based method has been proposed in which diabetic retinopathy lesions are detected automatically and independently of datasets, and

α-synuclein overexpression in the retina leads to vision impairment and degeneration of dopaminergic amacrine cells.

The presence of α-synuclein aggregates in the retina of Parkinson's disease patients has been associated with vision impairment. In this study we sought to determine the effects of α-synuclein overexpression on the survival and function of dopaminergic amacrine cells (DACs) in the retina. Adult mice were intravitreally injected with an adeno-associated viral (AAV) vector to overexpress human wild-type α-synuclein in the inner retina. Before and after systemic injections of levodopa (L-DOPA), retinal responses and visual acuity-driven behavior were measured by electroretinography (ERG) and a wa

A Rare Cause of Optic Neuropathy.

Lyme disease is a multisystem infection caused by Borrelia burgdorferi that mainly affects the joints, the heart, and the nervous system. Neurological complications usually manifest in untreated patients and present as meningitis, cranial neuropathies, and radiculoneuritis. The authors present the case of a 48-year-old male who developed loss of vision in the right eye over a period of two months. On physical examination a relative afferent pupillary defect of the right eye was noted. Visual evoked potential test revealed delayed P100 latency bilaterally, confirming a bilateral optic neuropath

Olfactory Testing Informs the Decision Process to Obtain Advanced Neuroimaging in Traumatic Brain Injury.

The purpose of this article is to examine the usefulness of olfactory testing as a tool for the evaluation or stratification of traumatic brain injury (TBI) patients. Olfactory dysfunction is more likely to be overlooked by both the patient and the provider, especially in the acute setting, in contrast to deficits in other senses like vision or hearing. This is a retrospective clinical analysis (case series) of eight active duty service members referred to ear, nose, and throat clinic at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center during a 2-yr period between March 2014 and March 2016 for sub
