Tailored Psychoeducational Home Interventions for Children with a Chronic Illness: Families' Experiences.

The quality of life for a child with a chronic illness depends on various factors, including the illness's severity, medical treatments, psychosocial and educational support, resource availability, and community involvement. These biopsychosocial factors become significant when the child receives care at home. This article presents and evaluates a highly personalized support project offered to 40 Sicilian families, consisting of educational, social, and psychological services delivered at the families homes and in their communities. Guided by the Psychosocial Assessment Tool (PAT) and the Func

Colorectal cancer: a qualitative study of coping strategies used by survivors, with associated social determinants.

BACKGROUND: Colorectal cancer survivors have to develop coping strategies during the diagnosis and survivorship period. This study aims to identify coping strategies in patients with colorectal cancer, in particular the differences between coping strategies during the disease and throughout survival. It also aims to investigate the impact of some social determinants on coping strategies and critically reflect on the influence of positive psychology. METHODS: Qualitative study with in-depth interviews of a purposive sample of 21 colorectal cancer survivors in Majorca (Spain), developed between

A systematic review and narrative synthesis of mental imagery tasks in people with an intellectual disability: Implications for psychological therapies.

Mental imagery is recognised for its role in both psychological distress and wellbeing, with mental imagery techniques increasingly being incorporated into psychological interventions. In this systematic review and narrative synthesis (PROSPERO 2021: CRD42021240930), we identify and evaluate the evidence base for the phenomenon and phenomenology of mental imagery in people with intellectual disabilities, to ascertain the applicability of such interventions for this population. Electronic searches of nine databases and grey literature identified relevant publications. Two reviewers independentl

[A case study of cognitive behavioral therapy for illness anxiety and depression caused COVID-19 in a breast cancer].

Cancer and the various medical treatments and tests are a major physical and psychological challenge for patients, their relatives and for the medical staff as well. Adherence and compliance become critical factors during prolonged oncological therapies. The mental health of people with malignant cancer, untreated psychological symptoms can affect survival by increasing distress and suffering, weakening quality of life and reducing adherence. Furthermore, they have a particularly high comorbidity with psychiatric disorders. The aim of this study is to introduce the tools of cognitive behaviour

Prevalence of Anxiety, Depression, and Stress among Teachers during the COVID-19 Pandemic: A Rapid Systematic Review with Meta-Analysis.

BACKGROUND: Since the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, teachers have been accumulating adverse psychological symptoms due to the closure of educational centers and the need to adapt to different teaching modalities. METHODS: Medline and PubMed were searched for studies on the prevalence of depression, anxiety, stress, and burn-out in teachers, published from 1 December 2019 to 15 June 2021. RESULTS: In total, eight studies were included in this study. The results show that teachers report levels of anxiety (17%), depression (19%), and stress (30%). In Asia, there has been more anxiety com

Pregnancy after miscarriage in primiparae and multiparae: implications for women's psychological well-being.

Introduction: Miscarriage is a stressful life event with negative consequences that can last into the subsequent gestation, increasing women's risk for psychological symptoms. Less clear in literature is whether having a living child may buffer the psychological impact of miscarriage on subsequent pregnancies. Objective: explore levels of depression, anxiety and fear of delivery in women with and without a previous miscarriage, taking into consideration the presence of a living child.Method: 208 women (M = 34.68) were recruited during the third trimester of gestation. The sample was composed of

Children with neurodegenerative disease and obsessive-compulsive behaviour.

BACKGROUND: Children with neurodegenerative diseases progressively lose skills and develop somatic and psychiatric symptoms. Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) may occur, a disorder for which effective medical and psychological treatments are available. However, whether these treatments are useful for children with neurodegenerative disease is unknown. CASE PRESENTATION: A child with an uncommon form of neurodegenerative disease (with loss of sight and incipient cognitive decline) had during the previous year developed time-consuming compulsive behaviours. The child spent much of the day at

Heart rate variability as a biomarker in health and affective disorders: A perspective on neuroimaging studies.

The dynamic embodiment of psychological processes is evident in the association of health outcomes, behavioural traits and psychological functioning with Heart Rate Variability (HRV). The dominant high-frequency component of HRV is an index of the central neural control of heart rhythm, mediated via the parasympathetic vagus nerve. HRV provides a potential objective measure of action policies for the adaptive and predictive allostatic regulation of homeostasis within the cardiovascular system. In its support, a network of brain regions (referred to as the 'central autonomic network') maps inte

Cognitive-behavioral profiles among different categories of orofacial pain patients: diagnostic and treatment implications.

Psychological homogeneity in temporomandibular disorders (TMD) is not conclusive. The multidimensional pain inventory (MPI) has previously identified 3 cognitive-behavioral profiles in TMD and chronic pain patients. Our aims were to replicate these findings in another cultural setting and relate the profiles to the diagnosis and to the treatment demand and outcome. The MPI was administered to 112 referrals comprising 6 categories of patients diagnosed with TMD or intractable orofacial pain. Dysfunctional profiles (high in pain and distress) were most common in patients with orofacial pain of o

Fantasy or structural defect? The borderline dilemma as viewed from analysis of an experience of nonhumanness.

The experience of nonhumanness, a crucial aspect of the phenomenal self of borderline states, is studied in two cases to test assumptions concerning the application of the classic ego-psychological or object-relations and self-psychological models. Are these experiences to be seen as fantasy and treated as manifest content, with dynamically active unconscious conflict and meaning, requiring interpretation, or as a developmental arrest in which structural disturbances are ameliorated through clarifying and empathic interventions? The first case is of a patient with a neurotic depression and hys

Understanding Internalized Weight Bias and Its Psychological Consequences: Implications for Improving Quality of Life.

Conducted in a French clinical context, this study examines the association between experiences of weight stigma, internalized weight bias (IWB), coping strategies, quality of life (QoL), and obesity-specific self-efficacy (OSSE) among adults living with obesity. It also tests whether coping mediates the relationship between IWB and QoL or OSSE. A cross-sectional sample of 132 adults (mean age = 49.3 years; mean BMI = 41.5 kg/m2) completed questionnaires assessing experienced weight stigma, IWB, coping strategies (adaptive and maladaptive), QoL (Mental Health Continuum-Short Form), and OSSE. Spanish Adaptation of the Career Commitment Scale: Psychometric Evidence and Associations with Stress and Health Across the Lifespan.

Introduction/Objectives: In the context of Spain's persistently high job insecurity and evolving labor market, understanding how individuals sustain career engagement is critical. This study aimed to adapt and validate the Career Commitment Scale (CCS) for use in the Spanish population and examine its relationship with career adaptability, mental health, and stress across different age groups. Methods: Using a sample of 418 participants, exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses confirmed the CCS's original three-factor structure, career identity, planning, and resilience, with satisfactory

Adapted emotional freedom techniques (EFT) for managing kinesiophobia in patients with rheumatoid arthritis: a feasibility study.

BACKGROUND: Up to 70% of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) experience kinesiophobia, a debilitating fear of movement that exacerbates physical limitations and psychological stress. However, effective interventions remain limited, particularly in resource-constrained settings. This study evaluated the feasibility, safety, and acceptability of an adapted Emotional Freedom Techniques (EFT) intervention for Chinese patients with RA. METHODS: A two-phase design was used. Phase 1 involved protocol validation and adaptation through the Delphi method. Phase 2 was a single-arm feasibility study

Using the evidence to decision frameworks to formulate the direction and strength of recommendations for adapted guidelines of physical restraints in critical care: A Delphi study.

BACKGROUND: It has been shown that the use of physical restraints has negative physiological and psychological impacts on critically ill patients. The development of clinical practice guidelines is necessary for minimizing the use of physical restraints. OBJECTIVE: As part of a guideline adaptation project, this study aimed to formulate the direction and strength of recommendations for adapted guidelines of physical restraints in critical care. METHODS: Literature retrieval of guidelines and systematic reviews was performed and guideline steering committee discussions were conducted to devel

Measuring minds across generations: a theoretical framework on psychometric validity, interpretive frameworks, and contextual norming in cross-cohort psychological research.

BACKGROUND: Psychological research increasingly compares mental health outcomes across generations, with studies reporting elevated anxiety and depression in Generation Z and Alpha. Current instruments, interpretive frameworks, and normative standards were developed using language and contextual assumptions from earlier cohorts developing in distinct technological, economic, and social ecosystems. AIM: This Hypothesis and Theory article proposes to (i) evaluate measurement validity and interpretive framework issues in cross-generational research, (ii) analyze how contexts shape construct mean

Time perspective status and associated factors among young and middle-aged women with gynecologic malignancies who have parenting responsibilities.

OBJECTIVE: Gynecologic malignancies in young and middle-aged women severely disrupt life plans and future expectations. While Time Perspective (TP) theory offers a valuable framework for understanding psychological adaptation, research on TP status and its associated factors in this population remains scarce. This study aimed to characterize TP status and identify associated factors. METHODS: A cross-sectional study was conducted among 266 young and middle-aged patients with gynecologic malignancies who were married or cohabiting, had at least one minor child, and were hospitalized across thr

Navigating Concurrent Diagnoses With Cancer and Mental Health Disorder: Patients' Perspectives on Personalised Treatment and Care.

BACKGROUND: People living with concurrent cancer and mental health disorders face heightened vulnerability within healthcare systems that are predominantly organised around biomedical treatment pathways. Although cancer care has advanced substantially, less is known about how these patients experience recognition of their psychological vulnerability, continuity of care, communication and opportunities to participate meaningfully in decisions about treatment. AIM: To explore patients' experiences of living with concurrent cancer and mental health disorders, with particular focus on how they ex

Psychedelic Communitas: Intersubjective Experience During Psychedelic Group Sessions Predicts Enduring Changes in Psychological Wellbeing and Social Connectedness.

Background: Recent years have seen a resurgence of research on the potential of psychedelic substances to treat addictive and mood disorders. Historically and contemporarily, psychedelic studies have emphasized the importance of contextual elements ('set and setting') in modulating acute drug effects, and ultimately, influencing long-term outcomes. Nevertheless, current small-scale clinical and laboratory studies have tended to bypass a ubiquitous contextual feature of naturalistic psychedelic use: its social dimension. This study introduces and psychometrically validates an adapted Communitas

Psychogenic factors in the aetiology of stomatopyrosis.

This research has been conducted on the basis of the association between a psychogenic factor and stomatopyrosis as its consequence. Stomatopyrosis is characterized as a burning sensation or as pain in the mouth cavity with clinically normal oral mucosa. It typically occurs with elderly female population, aged on average 67. Burning mouth as a symptom occurs primarily on the lips, although it may be located on some other sites on the oral mucosa. There are various etiological factors influencing the emergence of stomatopyrosis. They are divided into local factors, related to candidiasis, dysfu

When self-control is no longer a protective factor: the moderating effect of institutionalized identity on attitudes toward artificial intelligence.

As artificial intelligence (AI) is increasingly applied in high-risk industries, understanding the attitudes of different occupational groups toward AI and their underlying psychological correlates has become an important research issue. Existing studies typically conceptualize self-control as a psychological trait with universal adaptive value, suggesting that it helps buffer "individuals" negative attitudes toward new technologies; however, this assumption is primarily based on samples from the general population. Drawing on a situated perspective of psychological functioning, the present cr
