Secondary hypertriglyceridemia.

Secondary hypertriglyceridemia (HTG) are the most common cause of excess triglyceride rich particles in plasma. Faced with HTG, the first thing to do is rule out if there is a secondary cause since it can interact with genetic susceptibility and further aggravate the HTG. The most common causes are diet with high fat and high glycemic index, obesity, diabetes mellitus, alcohol consumption, renal disease like nephrotic syndrome, hepatic disorders and medications. The most important medications that can influence in HTG are oestrogen, isotretinoin, immunosuppressant therapy, L-asparaginase and w

Lifestyle Interventions in the Treatment of Obsessive-Compulsive and Related Disorders: A Systematic Review.

OBJECTIVE: Lifestyle medicine is increasingly important in psychiatry for its efficacy as a transdiagnostic treatment, its preventative potential, and its increased tolerability compared with first-line strategies. Although the impact of lifestyle medicine is strong across many psychiatric illnesses, our understanding of the effectiveness of lifestyle interventions in treating obsessive-compulsive and related disorders (OCRDs) is minimal. We aimed to conduct a systematic review examining the effect of lifestyle interventions (targeting diet, exercise, sleep, stress management, and tobacco/alco

Predictors of health behaviors during a college national championship sports event: A daily diary study.

Objective: Few studies have examined relations between college sporting events and maladaptive health behaviors among non-athlete college students. Participants: 97 college students. Methods: Completed nightly surveys (alcohol, eating, physical activity, sexual risk taking, smoking) for 11 days around a National Championship game. Results: Baseline stress and rumination was related to worse health behavior; mindfulness was related to better health behavior. Hierarchical linear modeling showed that all maladaptive health behaviors significantly increased the day of the sporting event compared t

Identifying Effective Behavior Change Techniques for Alcohol and Illicit Substance Use During Pregnancy: A Systematic Review.

BACKGROUND: During pregnancy, consuming alcohol and using illicit drugs can have serious health implications for both mother and child. Behavioral change interventions, especially those underpinned by theoretical constructs, can be effective in reducing harmful substance use among pregnant women. PURPOSE: To understand what type of behavior change mechanisms could be useful in reducing alcohol consumption or achieving abstinence from illicit drug use during pregnancy, this review aimed to identify behavior change techniques (BCTs), the smallest, active components of interventions that may be

Hodgkin lymphoma presenting as alcohol-induced back pain.

A 32-year-old Chinese man without significant medical history presented with a 2-month history of worsening lumbosacral back pain radiating to the groin and left lower extremity. He also described a shooting pain in the sciatic nerve distribution that began with and was exacerbated by alcohol consumption, a rare but known symptom of Hodgkin lymphoma (HL). On exam, an anterior chest wall mass was noted. Radiographic evaluation of an anterior mediastinal mass showed osseous erosion into the manubrium. MRI of the lumbar spine showed diffuse osseous disease of the lower thoracic and lumbar spine w

Risk factors for gout and prevention: a systematic review of the literature.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Our objective was to perform a systematic review of risk factors and prevention of gout. We searched Medline for fully published reports in English using keywords including but not limited to 'gout', 'epidemiology', 'primary prevention', 'secondary prevention', 'risk factors'. Data from relevant articles meeting inclusion criteria were extracted using standardized forms. RECENT FINDINGS: Of the 751 titles and abstracts, 53 studies met the criteria and were included in the review. Several risk factors were studied. Alcohol consumption increased the risk of incident gout, esp

[Opioid antagonists and alcohol consumption].

INTRODUCTION: Alcoholism is considered a chronic, progressive and frequently mortal disease; it is a primary phenomenon rather than a sign or symptom of other diseases. With the aim to reduce the alcohol consumption and the relapse in alcoholics, several pharmacological strategies have been applied; among them the opioid antagonists have been successfully used. The scope of the present study is to show experimental evidence of the effect of different opioid antagonists on alcohol consumption on the base of their receptor specificity in different pharmacological strategies. DEVELOPMENT: Alcoho

Alcohol and cancer.

A causal association has been established between alcohol consumption and cancers of the oral cavity, pharynx, larynx, oesophagus, liver, colon, rectum, and, in women, breast; an association is suspected for cancers of the pancreas and lung. Evidence suggests that the effect of alcohol is modulated by polymorphisms in genes encoding enzymes for ethanol metabolism (eg, alcohol dehydrogenases, aldehyde dehydrogenases, and cytochrome P450 2E1), folate metabolism, and DNA repair. The mechanisms by which alcohol consumption exerts its carcinogenic effect have not been defined fully, although plausi

Alcohol-associated severe hyperhomocysteinaemia.

We report the cases of three men with severe hyperhomocysteinaemia that was associated with high alcohol intake and which resolved on reduction of alcohol intake. Investigation to identify other obvious causes of the hyperhomocysteinaemia excluded renal failure and vitamin deficiencies. Alcohol as a possible cause of significantly increased plasma homocysteine may be under-recognized by clinicians.

Protecting you/protecting me: effects of an alcohol prevention and vehicle safety program on elementary students.

This paper describes an evaluation of Protecting You/Protecting Me (PY/PM), a classroom-based, alcohol-use prevention and vehicle safety program for elementary students in first through fifth grades developed by Mothers Against Drunk Driving. PY/PM lessons and activities focus on teaching children about (I) their brains (why their brain is important, how their brain continues to develop throughout childhood and adolescence, what alcohol does to the developing brain, and why it is important to protect their brain); (2) vehicle safety (what to do to protect themselves should they ever ride with

[European action plan on alcohol in the Czech Republic--no substantial progress].

Czech Republic joined European action plan on alcohol for years 2000 to 2004 and signed its accomplishment. However, since 2000 situation has worsened. Alcohol consumption raised in 2001 (the last known data) to 10.0 litters of 100% alcohol (that is 159.9 litters of beer, 8.2 litters of distillates and 16.2 litters of wine per person per year). The only positive aspect was the small rise of consumption tax in distillates and that some thesis of the European action plan on alcohol were included into the governmental document "Long-term improvement of the health status of the population in Czech
