A 61-year-old eutrophic male was diagnosed with vitamin B12 deficiency and megaloblastic anemia. A modified Schilling test suggested intestinal malabsorption unrelated to intrinsic factor deficiency. Subsequent colonoscopy revealed the presence of a Taenia tapeworm. The anemia resolved within days under therapy with niclosamide and temporary vitamin B12 supplements. The present case suggests that, in addition to other well-known parasitic agents, e.g., Diphyllobothrium latum and Giardia lamblia, Taenia infestation can also be a cause of intestinal vitamin B12 malabsorption.

A 53-year-old male with a severe destructive lesion of the L4 vertebral body caused by an Echinococcus granulosus hydatid cyst was studied. He underwent surgery twice, and was treated continuously with albendazole, followed by albendazole combined with praziquantel. Specific anti-echinococcal immunoglobulin (Ig) G, IgG4, and IgE activities before and after surgery were further determined. In spite of long-term chemotherapeutic treatment combined with surgery, no eradication of the disease was achieved.

We present rupture of lung hydatid cyst in a patient with multiple organ involvement during albendazole treatment. The patient was first provided mechanical ventilation than residue cavity and the other intact cyst was treated surgically. We concluded that albendazole should be used in postoperative period in patients with hydatid disease of the lung to prevent recurrent disease.

Ivermectin is widely used in veterinary medicine as an anthelminthic and generally has a wide margin of safety, but Collies are prone to ivermectin toxicity. Cysticercosis of the optic nerve has been reported only twice in the literature. A case of optic nerve cysticercosis in a 50-year-old woman with atypical optic neuritis is reported. Computerized tomography showed a thickened left optic nerve with a ring-enhancing lesion containing an eccentric nodule. An enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay test for cysticercosis further established the diagnosis. The patient was treated with oral prednisolone and albendazole, with no improvement in vision.

PURPOSE: To evaluate the efficacy of ivermectin and thiabendazole in confirmed cases of diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis.
METHODS: Two patients with diffuse unilateral subacute neuroretinitis were treated with anthelminthic drugs. The first patient was treated with ivermectin and the second, with thiabendazole.
