INTRODUCTION: Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is a common sleep disorder characterized by intermittent hypoxia, systemic inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction. Current diagnostic standards rely on polysomnography (PSG), which is limited by cost and accessibility. The identification of a sensitive and specific biomarker has the potential to aid both diagnosis and treatment monitoring. Follistatin-like 1 (FSTL1) has been implicated in inflammatory pathways; however, its role in OSA remains largely unexplored.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: In this study, we aimed to explore changes in circulating FSTL1…

INTRODUCTION AND OBJECTIVES: The study examines how hypoxaemia in obstructive sleep apnoea (OSA) relates to cancer. It focuses on CD25, an immune-checkpoint, analyzing its levels in OSA patients with and without cancer to assess whether CD25 could serve as a biomarker for cancer mortality.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We investigated the plasma levels of soluble CD25 (sCD25) in three independent cohorts: patients with no evidence of cancer, with melanoma, and with lung cancer. We explored the role of hypoxaemia by intermittent hypoxia (IH) and HIF-1α inhibition in vitro models.
RESULTS: Our result

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is often accompanied by sleep bruxism (SB). A low respiratory arousal threshold (AT) may contribute to the induction or exacerbation of SB. The aim of this study was to assess the impact of the AT on the intensity of bruxism in individuals with OSA and SB. The prospective observational study was undertaken in 117 subjects with suspected sleep disorder (47% females, average age 44.83 years) who undergone video-polysomnography. Among the study participants, 77 (64.1%) were found to have a low AT, while 42 (35.9%) had a high AT. Participants with low AT's had signifi…

STUDY OBJECTIVES: An association between COVID-19 and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) has been reported in literature. We aimed to address the occurrence and phenotypes of OSA in adults with a history of COVID-19 infection and its possible association with long-COVID.
METHODS: In this matched case-control study, 152 individuals with a history of COVID-19 and 152 without were evaluated in a sleep laboratory. Groups were matched for age, sex, and body mass index. OSA was defined as an apnea-hypopnea index (AHI) ≥15/h. Rapid Eye Movement (REM)-predominant OSA was defined as AHI ≥15/h and REM-AHI/n…

OBJECTIVE: Sudden unexpected death in epilepsy (SUDEP) is suggested to be a cardiorespiratory collapse that occurs shortly after a seizure. Prior work in rats suggests that reflexive apneas (produced by stimulation of trigeminal or vagal peripheral sensory targets) is highly fatal during seizure but well tolerated otherwise. These reflexes share network connectivity in the medulla, particularly the caudal solitary nucleus (NTS) and ventral respiratory column (VRC), and possibly other intermediate structures. We sought to observe the electrographic activity in these regions.
METHODS: We use ur…

PURPOSE: Sleep disturbances are considered an early manifestation of Amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS). However, sleep-disordered breathing (SDB) in ALS remains underexplored. The primary outcome of this study is to describe the clinical, functional and polygraphic characteristics of ALS patients with baseline SDB and to compare those with and without obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in level III polysomnography (PSG) at diagnosis. Secondary outcomes included identification of baseline factors predictive of non-invasive ventilation (NIV) initiation/death during follow-up and assessing the role …

BACKGROUND: Oxyhemoglobin desaturation events (ODE) are major contributors to the detection and classification of obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). However, variations in pulse oximetry resolution may affect ODE detection and, consequently, the oxyhemoglobin desaturation index (ODI) and the hypoxic burden (HB). We hypothesized that traditional low-resolution pulse oximetry (TRPO, 1 %), which is designed to round up decimal points in the readout, compared to high-resolution pulse oximetry (HRPO, 0.1 %), impacts on ODI and HB.
METHODS: Consecutive deidentified diagnostic sleep studies of patients …

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) is one of the most common sleep disorders, affecting 1-10 % of children. A key risk factor is elevated body mass index (BMI). This exploratory study aimed to assess OSA prevalence and severity in adolescents living with obesity and explore associations with clinical and metabolic parameters. Adolescents with obesity aged 10-15 years hospitalized for weight management were enrolled. Participants underwent examination including anthropometry, blood pressure, and lipid profile. BMI was evaluated using WHO BMI-for-age z-scores and an internal standard deviation score …

A triad of TMJ Ankylosis, Micrognathia, and Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome (OSAS), is common in prolonged cases of TMJ ankylosis or TMJ Re-Ankylosis. The goals of managing a case of TMJ ankylosis include creating a functional joint, improving the aesthetic appearance, treating OSAS, and preventing re-ankylosis. This case study documents the treatment of a 26-year-old male with bilateral TMJ re-ankylosis, which was more pronounced on the right side while considering the social and financial constraints of the patient. The case was managed by interpositional arthroplasty and advancement slidin…

Obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) predominantly affects patients who are obese and causes systemic organ damage. Little is known about the relationship between fat distribution and bone impairment in these patients. We aimed to evaluate the impact of the visceral adipose tissue (VAT) on the bone quality of patients with OSA. In our prospective study, 49 untreated patients with mild-to-severe OSA underwent dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry. Polygraphy data were also collected. According to the recent reference values for European adults, patients were divided by the sex-related threshold of the VAT …
