Behavioural problems and psychiatric symptoms in 5-13 year-old Swedish children-a comparison of parent ratings on the FTF (Five to Fifteen) with the ratings on CBCL (Child Behavior Checklist).

As part of the validation procedure of a new parent questionnaire ("Five to Fifteen" or the FTF) a random sample of 1500 children aged 5-13 years from the Swedish Population Register (SPAR) was approached. The FTF and the Child Behavior Checklist (CBCL) were sent to the parents of the children together with questions about background conditions. After two reminders the response rate was 55.6%. The final sample had a mean age of 9.12 years (SD=1.89) and a sex distribution with 55% boys and 45% girls. Analysis of attrition did not support overrepresentation of foreigners/immigrants in the attrit

Boredom proneness and sleep disorders as predictors of adult attention deficit scores.

This study examined the extent to which boredom proneness and sleep disturbances were related to attention deficit scores in college-aged adults. In a sample of 148 college students, Attention scores on the Adult Behavior Checklist were best predicted by Boredom Proneness (BP) subscale scores, which assess one's inability to maintain internal stimulation and feelings of constraint, and scores on the Epworth Daytime Sleepiness Scale and Athens Insomnia Scale (R2 = .57). Hyperactivity scores were best predicted by the BP subscales, which assess one's need for a stimulating environment, the perce

An evidence-based medicine approach to combined treatment for ADHD in children and adolescents.

Psychiatrists need to update their skills to incorporate advances in psychiatric practice and to do so "at the bedside."To this end, evidence-based medicine (EBM), which is widely used as an educational heuristic in other areas medicine and has begun to make inroad in psychiatry training programs, provides practical methods to access, evaluate, and interpret the medical literature regarding disease causation, prognosis, diagnostic tests, and treatment strategies. With respect to treatment, EBM asserts the primacy of randomized, controlled trials for demonstrating efficacy, and, in some cases, t

Cognitive and neurophysiological evaluation of Japanese dyslexia.

Seven Japanese dyslexic boys were evaluated as to their pedagogic performance on the pupil rating scale (PRS), and psychological and neurophysiological characteristics. One of them suffered from severe English dyslexia despite that his Japanese dyslexia was feeble. PRS did not successfully reveal their reading difficulties. Psychological examination (WISC-R and K-ABC) revealed their cognitive dysfunction, but the results were heterogeneous. The Token test was most useful for detecting their poor reading comprehension. Electroencephalogram (EEG) coherence analysis showed high inter- and intra-h

Disruptive behavior, hyperactivity, and learning disabilities in children with Tourette's syndrome.

As in many other areas of science, improvements in research methodologies lead the way to powerful new understanding of disorders and their treatment. Great strides have been made in defining the phenomenology of TS and its relationship to other disorders. However, we have not yet reached a true consensus and developed treatment strategies based on that consensus. Clearly much research needs to be done. Identifying the putative gene for TS would greatly accelerate this process.

Heterocyclic antidepressants in nonpsychiatric disorders.

Heterocyclic antidepressants have been used successfully in the treatment of migraine, enuresis and encopresis, peptic ulcer disease, irritable bowel syndrome, chronic pain, narcolepsy, sleep apnea and attention deficit disorder. The mechanism of their therapeutic effects in these conditions is still unclear. Serotonergic, noradrenergic, anticholinergic and antihistaminic properties and rapid-eye-movement sleep suppression have been implicated.

Symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity in children with habitual snoring: evidence from a community-based study in Istanbul.

BACKGROUND: Neurobehavioural symptoms of inattention and hyperactivity are common in children with sleep-disordered breathing (SDB). Prevalence rates of habitual snoring and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) are very similar and both have a substantial negative effect on children's behavioural health. OBJECTIVE: We examined the differences for subjective attentional and hyperactivity measures reported by parents and teachers among primary school children with habitual snoring and age- and sex-matched controls in a community-based case-control study in Istanbul. Methods In 2002,

The utility of the physical examination and investigations in the pediatricneurology consultation.

For most consultations the diagnosis is established by a thorough clinical history. We prospectively assessed the impact of each component of the pediatric neurologic consultation in 500 consecutive referrals to a tertiary care pediatric neurology clinic. Diagnosis and management decisions were declared for each patient by the consultant after each stage of the consultation process (1: receipt of consultation letter, 2: history, 3: physical examination and 4: receipt of investigation results). We found that the physical examination and investigations influenced management decisions for less th

Borderline cognitive level in a family with Bazex-Dupré-Christol syndrome.

Bazex-Dupré-Christol syndrome (BDCS) [OMIM 301845] is an X-linked dominant disorder of the hair follicle characterized by multiple basal cell carcinomas, follicular atrophoderma, congenital hypotrichosis, and hypohidrosis. Additional features include multiple milia, trichoepitheliomas, and axillary hidradenitis suppurativa as well as a variety of other symptoms. Some patients with a diagnosis of BDCS have had poor school performance. But no other associated psychopathological disorders have been described in the literature. We describe the neuropsychological characteristics and the co-occurrin

Neurovascular dysfunction in psychiatric disorders: Underlying mechanisms and therapeutic approaches.

BACKGROUND: Neurovascular interfaces, specifically the blood-brain barrier (BBB) and blood-retinal barrier (BRB), play pivotal roles in maintaining the homeostasis of the central nervous system (CNS). For a long time, these structures were seen only as a way of protection, but we currently know that they have a critical role in CNS (dys)function. Several studies have identified neurovascular alterations in early stages of brain and eye diseases, contributing to the pathophysiology of such conditions. More recently, interesting data have also highlighted the importance of neurovasculature in ps

Prospective memory in clinical populations.

OBJECTIVE: Prospective memory (PM) has emerged as a form of episodic memory that is frequently impaired in a variety of clinical populations. Neuropsychologists who routinely evaluate these populations are often unaware of the possibility of PM deficits or the impact these deficits may have on everyday functioning. The objective of this special issue is to provide an overview of the nature of prospective deficits in a range of clinical populations, to discuss neuropsychological assessment techniques, and to critically evaluate management strategies. METHOD: We solicited papers from establishe

Association of Intrinsic Brain Architecture With Changes in Attentional and Mood Symptoms During Development.

IMPORTANCE: Understanding the neurodevelopmental trajectory of psychiatric symptoms is important for improving early identification, intervention, and prevention of mental disorders. OBJECTIVE: To test whether the strength of the coupling of activation between specific brain regions, as measured by resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI), predicted individual children's developmental trajectories in terms of attentional problems characteristic of attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder and internalizing problems characteristics of major depressive disorder (MDD). Poverty, Toxic Stress, and Education in Children Born Preterm.

BACKGROUND: Preterm birth, defined as birth before the completion of 37 weeks of gestation, is a multifactorial global epidemic with psychosocial, economic, and physical ramifications affecting the child, family, and community at large. Toxic stress-the results of exposure to adverse childhood experiences-results in changes to brain structure and function that negatively affects future health. OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to apply the eco-bio-developmental (EBD) model of poverty and preterm birth to the cross-sectional data of the 2016 National Survey of Children's Health to evaluate

Residual genetic connectivity beyond shared liability in 14 psychiatric disorders.

OBJECTIVES: Transdiagnostic genetic factor models organise shared liability across psychiatric disorders, but they may leave systematic pairwise genetic overlap unexplained after accounting for shared liability. METHODS: Using publicly available Psychiatric Genomics Consortium cross-disorder published genetic correlations, we computed edge-level residual genetic correlations (observed minus model-implied) for all disorder pairs. We summarised residual misfit by ranking the largest residual edges and by aggregating residual edges into disorder-level hub indices. Uncertainty was propagated via

[Neuropsychological performance in ADHD and tic-disorders: a prospective 1-year follow-up].

Inhibitory deficits in the brain play a major role in the pathophysiology of ADHD and tic disorders. Impairment of executive functions (EF) may be directly linked to these abnormalities. Hence, parallel to an amelioration of symptomatology in ADHD and in tic disorders a decline of EF impairment should be observed. This phenomenon would indirectly suggest that there exist inhibitory deficits in these disorders. Age and IQ matched samples of boys one with ADHD (n = 15; age: M = 128 months SD = 16, IQ: M = 101 SD = 11), the other with tic disorders (n = 14; age: M = 132 months SD = 16; IQ: M = 10

Psychological aspects of orthodontics in clinical practice. Part two: general psychosocial wellbeing.

Orthodontists tend to treat/see their patients on a systematic, recurrent basis, often during crucial stages of psychological development. Therefore, they have a pivotal role in identifying a number of psychological as well as of psychiatric disorders. Effective communication is crucial and unfortunately, it is often underestimated in a busy clinical practice. Aim of part two of this article it to review the role clinical orthodontics and the orthodontist-patient relationship have on the patients' psychosocial wellbeing, including effects on self-esteem, bullying and harassment by peers, and e
