Epidemiological analysis of brain tumours in dogs in Australia between 1994 and 2024.

Brain tumours are a relatively rare but a clinically important cause of neurological diseases in dogs. This study aimed to estimate the incidence of canine brain tumours in Australia, assess spatio-temporal patterns, explore tumour type-dog breed relationships, evaluate post-diagnosis survival for selected brain tumours, and identify animal-level risk factors. A retrospective cross-sectional analysis was conducted using clinical records from 1994 to 2024 from veterinary clinics participating in the VetCompass Australia (VCA) registry. Records were retrieved using targeted keyword search terms,

Genetic correlations between enteric methane and traits of economic importance in a beef finishing system.

With the pressing global challenge of climate change, the potential to breed cattle that produce less lifetime methane offers a transformati … on with minimal impact on enteric methane emissions. Overall, these findings emphasize the need for breeding strategies that capture the trade-offs between reducing methane emissions and preserving economically valuable traits such as feed intake, carcass weight, and conformation in beef finishing systems.

Associations of diarrhea and bovine respiratory disease with growth, feed intake, and mortality during the preweaning period of Holsteins and beef-on-dairy calves.

Diarrhea and bovine respiratory disease (BRD) are the most common illnesses affecting calves during the preweaning period. This retrospective cohort study aimed to evaluate the associations of diarrhea and BRD with ADG, relative ADG (relADG; % of ADG relative to mid-point BW), milk replacer refusal (MRR), starter intake, and mortality in Holstein and beef-on-dairy (BxD) calves during the first 56 d of life. A total of 240 newborn calves (114 Holstein and 126 BxD) were enrolled between September 2023 and March 2024, and were housed individually for 56 d, bottle-fed with 6L/d of milk replacer an

Co-housing with Tibetan chickens improved the resistance of Arbor Acres chickens to Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis infection by altering their gut microbiota composition.

BACKGROUND: Salmonella enterica serovar Enteritidis (S. Enteritidis) is a global foodborne pathogen that poses a significant threat to human health, with poultry being the primary reservoir host. Therefore, addressing S. Enteritidis infections in poultry is crucial to protect human health and the poultry industry. In this study, we investigated the effect of co-housing Arbor Acres (AA) chickens, a commercial breed susceptible to S. Enteritidis, with Tibetan chickens, a local breed resistant to S. Enteritidis infection, on the resistance of the latter to the pathogen. RESULTS: Ninety-six 1-day

Milk microbiome in the first month of lactation and at weaning from ewes supplemented with zinc pre- and postpartum.

Mastitis is an important disease with economic and welfare implications in both clinical and subclinical states. The aim of this research was to sequence the hypervariable V4 region of the 16S rRNA gene to describe the microbial diversity and taxonomy of milk from clinically healthy ewes (Rambouillet, WF = 9; Hampshire, BF = 5). Experimental ewes represented a subset of a larger study assessing the impacts of divergent dietary zinc (Zn) concentrations [1 × National Academics of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM) recommendations = CON or 3 × NASEM recommendations = ZnTRT] throughout la

Health-associated changes of the fecal microbiota in dairy heifer calves during the pre-weaning period.

INTRODUCTION: Neonatal calf diarrhea is a multifactorial condition that occurs in early life when calves are particularly susceptible to enteric infection and dysbiosis of the gut microbiome. Good calf health is dependent on successful passive transfer of immunity from the dam through colostrum. There are limited studies on the developing gut microbiota from birth to weaning in calves. METHODOLOGY: Therefore, the objective of this study was to examine the effect of immune status and diarrheal incidence on the development of the fecal microbiota in Jersey (n = 22) and Holstein (n = 29) heifer

Computed tomographic characteristics of craniomandibular osteopathy in 20 dogs.

Craniomandibular osteopathy (CMO) is a proliferative, self-limiting, non-neoplastic disease of growing dogs characterised by excessive new bone formation on the skull and mandible. The radiographic findings of CMO are well described; however, limited reports of the computed tomographic (CT) appearance are available. This paper aims to characterise the spectrum of CT findings that can occur with CMO. The study is retrospective, descriptive, multicenter, and includes 20 cases. Age at presentation ranged from 6 weeks to 12 months, with no sex predisposition. Scottish terriers were overrepresented

Associations between insulin-like factor 3, scrotal circumference and semen characteristics in young Norwegian Red bulls.

With the integration of genomic selection in the cattle artificial insemination (AI) industry, bulls are selected for their semen production capacity and fertility at a younger age than previously. Norwegian Red bull calves selected as candidates to become future AI bulls based on their genomic breeding value are kept in a performance testing station from around the age of 3-12 months, allowing for sample collection and analysis of different parameters during their pre- and peripubertal period. Insulin-like factor 3 (INSL3) is a small peptide hormone specifically secreted by the mature Leydig …

Risk factors for antimicrobial use in veal calves and the association with mortality.

The intensive use of antimicrobials in the veal industry is heavily criticized, but drivers for antimicrobial usage (AMU) are still poorly understood. The industry fears that a drastic reduction in AMU would increase mortality, creating an unacceptable welfare issue. The objectives of the present study were to identify risk factors for AMU and to explore the relationship between AMU and mortality. A retrospective cohort study was performed on the antimicrobial registration data from the largest Belgian veterinary veal practice. The data set contained 295 production cycles from 78 farms, repres

Survey of disbudding practice on Czech dairy farms.

Disbudding is a routine practice in many dairy herds due to the effort to decrease the risk of injuries. Although the disbudding practice is regulated, it can vary among farms. The variation may be caused by many factors, such as herd size or type of breed, but also by farmers' perception of pain caused by disbudding. Hence, the aim of this study was to specify the disbudding practice on dairy farms in the Czech Republic and to assess these practices, including the use of pain mitigation medication, by breed, herd size, and sex of the disbudded calves. We analyzed data from 106 Czech dairy far

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinosis (NCL) is caused by the entire deletion of CLN8 in the Alpenländische Dachsbracke dog.

Neuronal ceroid lipofuscinoses (NCLs) are inherited lysosomal storage diseases that have been described in a variety of dog breeds, where they are caused by different mutations in different genes. However, the causative gene defect in the breed Alpenländische Dachsbracke remained unknown so far. Here we present two confirmed cases of NCL in Alpenländische Dachsbracke dogs from different litters of the same sire with a different dam harboring the same underlying novel mutation in the CLN8 gene. Case 1, a 2-year-old male Alpenländische Dachsbracke was presented with neurological signs including

Sire effect on early and late embryonic death in French Holstein cattle.

We investigated the effect of maternal sire on early pregnancy failure (between D0, day of insemination and D90) in their progeny during the first and second lactations (n=3508) in the Holstein breed. The estimated breeding value (EBV) for cow fertility of 12 bulls (reliability⩾0.95) was used to create the following three groups: low, medium and high EBV (EBV from -0.7 to 1 expressed as genetic standard deviation relative to the mean of the breed). In their daughters (93 to 516 per bull), progesterone measurement was carried out on the day of artificial insemination (AI; D0) to check whether t…

Modulation of cutaneous inflammation induced by ticks in contrasting phenotypes of infestation in bovines.

Tick saliva contains molecules that are inoculated at the site of attachment on their hosts in order to modulate local immune responses and facilitate a successful blood meal. Bovines express heritable, contrasting phenotypes of infestations with the cattle tick, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus: breeds of Bos taurus indicus are significantly more resistant than those of Bos taurus taurus. Tick saliva may contain molecules that interfere with adhesion of leukocytes to endothelium and resistant hosts may mount an inflammatory profile that is more efficient to hamper the tick's blood meal. We
