The Vi capsular antigen of Salmonella enterica serotype Typhi reduces Toll-like receptor-dependent interleukin-8 expression in the intestinal mucosa.

Human infections with nontyphoidal Salmonella serotypes, such as S. enterica serotype Typhimurium, are characterized by a massive neutrophil influx in the colon and terminal ileum. In contrast, neutrophils are scarce in intestinal infiltrates of typhoid fever patients. Here, we show that in S. enterica serotype Typhi, the causative agent of typhoid fever, expression of the Vi capsular antigen reduced expression of the neutrophil chemoattractant interleukin-8 (IL-8) in host cells. Capsulated bacteria elicited IL-8 expression in polarized human epithelial cells (T84) and human macrophage-like ce

[A case of early stage CADASIL showing only dizziness and vertigo with a novel mutation of Notch 3 gene].

We report a 39-year-old woman who presented with only dizziness and vertigo for 2 months. Neurological examination revealed no abnormalities except for hypereflexia on the left side extremities. Neurootological examination revealed no abnormalities. MRI of the brain demonstrated patchy hyperintensity areas on FLAIR images in the periventricular white matter and external capsule. Her grandmother had cerebral infarction and her father is suffering from multi-infarct dementia. Her second older sister who similarly had dizziness and vertigo demonstrated similar MRI findings characterized by patchy

Relationship between Lens culinaris agglutinin-reactive alpha-fetoprotein and pathologic features of hepatocellular carcinoma.

AIM: We investigated pathological features of Lens culinaris agglutinin-reactive alpha-fetoprotein (AFP-L3)-positive hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) in order to seek a pathological basis of poor prognosis of HCC patients with elevated AFP-L3. METHODS: A total of 111 patients with HCC < or =5 cm in diameter who underwent hepatic resection were studied. Serum AFP-L3 concentration was measured within a month prior to surgery by lectin-affinity electrophoresis coupled with antibody-affinity blotting, and expressed as AFP-L3 percentage of total AFP. AFP-L3 of 10% or higher was judged to be positive

Quantitative T1 mapping of hepatic encephalopathy using magnetic resonance imaging.

Changes are shown in the spin-lattice (T1) relaxation time caused by the putative deposition of manganese in various brain regions of hepatic encephalopathy (HE) patients using a novel and fast magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) method for quantitative relaxation time mapping. A new method, T1 mapping with partial inversion recovery (TAPIR), was used to obtain a series of T1-weighted images to produce T1 maps. Imaging of 15 control subjects and 11 patients was performed on a 1.5T MRI scanner. The measurement time per patient with this technique, including adjustments, was approximately 5 minutes

Periodontal disease and preterm birth: results of a pilot intervention study.

BACKGROUND: Previous case-control and prospective studies have shown an association between the presence of periodontitis and the risk of preterm birth (PTB). The goal of this pilot trial was to determine the feasibility of conducting a trial to determine whether treatment of periodontitis reduces the risk of spontaneous preterm birth (SPTB). METHODS: Three hundred sixty-six (366) women with periodontitis between 21 and 25 weeks' gestation were recruited and randomized to one of three treatment groups with stratification on the following two factors: 1) previous SPTB at <35 weeks and 2) body

TGFbeta-Smad signalling in postoperative human lens epithelial cells.

AIMS: To localise Smads3/4 proteins in lens epithelial cells (LECs) of fresh and postoperative human specimens. Smads3/4 are involved in signal transduction between transforming growth factor beta (TGFbeta) cell surface receptors and gene promoters. Nuclear localisation of Smads indicates achievement of endogenous TGFbeta signalling in cells. METHODS: Three circular sections of the anterior capsule, one lens, and 17 capsules undergoing postoperative healing were studied. Immunohistochemistry was performed for Smads3/4 in paraffin sections of the specimens. The effect of exogenous TGFbeta2 on …

Loss of heterozygosity in pseudoexfoliation syndrome.

PURPOSE: Pseudoexfoliation (PEX) syndrome is characterized by the accumulation of a material of unknown origin in the anterior structures of the eye. Loss of heterozygosity (LOH) in a genetic locus indicates the presence of a gene located in the same region that could be implicated in the development or the progression of a disease. In this study, the occurrence of LOH in tissues involved in PEX and the possible correlation of LOH incidence with clinical parameters were evaluated. METHODS: Twelve iris specimens, 12 anterior capsule specimens, and respective blood samples were obtained from 17

Immunochemical analysis of human kidney reticulin.

This study characterized the nature of reticulin fibrils from human kidney cortex by immunochemical analysis. Controls consisted of type I collagen fibrils derived from the kidney parietal capsule. Most of the fibrils in the capsule ranged in diameter from 60 to 80 nm whereas reticulin fibrils from the cortex ranged from 30-45 nm. Immunochemistry by light and electron microscopic examinations was carried out with antibodies directed against type I and type III collagens, their corresponding aminopropeptides, and decorin (PG-II). The ratio of type I to type III collagen was determined by cyanog

Design of a low-power RISC-V based intelligent endoscopy detection processor: EndoRISC-V.

Capsule endoscopy provides a non-invasive method for examining the gastrointestinal tract, but it generates more than 50,000 images which need several hours of manual examination. Real-time image processing in wearable receiver units could reduce the errors, but demand high computational throughput with low power and latency constraints. Standard CPUs are built for general-purpose workloads and fail to handle the mathematical computations and data throughput of image processing operations. This paper presents EndoRISC-V, a two-level reconfigurable RISC-V Harvard architecture consuming 124 mW t

Artificial intelligence in pediatric endoscopy for hereditary polyposis syndromes: promises and challenges.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Children with hereditary polyposis syndromes require long-term endoscopic surveillance to reduce risks of gastrointestinal complications: malignancy, bleeding, and obstruction, among others. However, surveillance remains challenging because of variable lesion distribution, subtle morphology, interobserver variability, and the burden of repeated procedures throughout the patient's lifetime. Artificial intelligence has transformed adult endoscopy, but its application in pediatric polyposis is less defined. This review summarizes current evidence and explores potential applicat

Co-encapsulated urease and glucose oxidase in polyelectrolyte microcapsules for simultaneous glucose and urea determination.

BACKGROUND: Clinical monitoring of metabolic disorders requires stable tools for simultaneous analyte detection. However, conventional free-enzyme assays suffer from rapid degradation, poor operational stability, and single-use limitations. Herein, we report a novel bi-enzymatic diagnostic system based on the rational co-encapsulation of glucose oxidase (GOx) and urease within polyelectrolyte microcapsules (PMCs) for the simultaneous determination of glucose and urea. RESULTS: Fabricated via layer-by-layer assembly, the PMCs achieved high enzyme loading (73 ± 2% for GOx and 93 ± 5% for urease…

Impact of Hyperglycemia on Streptococcus pneumoniae Virulence: Insights into Capsular Dynamics and Clinical Implications.

Hyperglycemia, a diabetic condition, profoundly affects the pathogenicity of Streptococcus pneumoniae ( S. pneumoniae ), a leading etiologic pathogen of pneumonia. This review addresses a systematic understanding of how hyperglycemia affects the pathogenicity of S. pneumoniae , especially by immune dysfunction, cytokine dysregulation, and oxidative stress. Although the length of the capsular polysaccharide (CPS) chain plays a role in immune evasion and survival of bacteria, hyperglycemia also affects host immune responses, leading to increased severity of infection in diabetic patients. CPS le

Small Bowel Bleeding Due to Vascular Lesions: Pathogenesis and Management.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: The purpose of this review is to provide a comprehensive review and recent updates in the understanding of the pathogenesis, diagnosis, and management of small bowel vascular lesions. RECENT FINDINGS: Recent terminology has shifted from "obscure GI bleeding" to "small bowel bleeding", with the former reserved for cases when the source of bleeding is not detected despite a thorough evaluation of the entire GI tract, including the small bowel. Recent diagnostic advances including imaging, video capsule endoscopy (VCE), and deep enteroscopy have allowed for the identification

Peptide-functionalized chitosan-based microcapsules for dual active targeted treatment of lung infections.

Lung infections, such as: pneumonia, chronic obstructive cystic fibrosis, tuberculosis are generally caused by viruses, bacteria and fungi. As these infections are very difficult to treat, new therapeutic approaches are investigated in order to maximize the efficiency of the treatment and to reduce the major complications that can occur. The main objective of this study was focused on the preparation of drug-loaded peptides-functionalized microcapsules, obtained by a double emulsion, based on carboxylated chitosan (CMCS), poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) and an activator [4-(4,6-dimethoxy-1,3,5-triaz…
