Molecular studies on Leishmania infantum from cats in Brazil with novel insights about its transmission route.

Leishmania spp. are protozoan parasites responsible for zoonotic diseases known as leishmanioses. These parasites are primarily transmitted by infected sandflies; however, alternative transmission routes, such as vertical and venereal transmission, have been documented in humans and dogs. This study investigated the presence of Leishmania DNA in the reproductive organs of domestic cats in an area endemic for visceral leishmaniosis (VL). Conjunctival swabs from 302 cats, and reproductive tissues from 41 of these animals (34 males and 7 females) were analyzed by PCR targeting the kDNA and ITS1 r…

Pathological characterization of lymphomas with involvement of the alimentary tract in feline leukemia virus-infected cats.

Lymphoma is a common neoplasm in cats, in which alimentary lymphoma is a common subtype, and it is usually diagnosed in elderly, feline leukemia virus (FeLV)-negative cats. This study aimed to describe the pathological features of lymphoma with involvement of the alimentary tract in FeLV-antigen-positive cats. In a 12-year retrospective study, 32 necropsied and FeLV-infected cats with lymphoma affecting the alimentary tract were identified. Twenty-one cases were multicentric lymphomas with secondary involvement of the alimentary tract, and the remaining 11 cats were considered to have primary …

Improving cestode diagnosis in domestic dogs and cats: the need for accurate and non-invasive techniques.

Cestode infections in companion animals pose a significant diagnostic challenge due to intermittent egg shedding and the limitations of traditional coproscopic techniques. This study aimed to evaluate the performance of microscopy and PCR in detecting cestodes in dogs and cats, using necropsy as the gold standard. A total of 81 animals (46 dogs and 35 cats) were examined by necropsy, with gastrointestinal tracts inspected for cestodes. Fecal samples were collected and analyzed by coproscopy and PCR targeting cestode infections. Necropsy identified cestodes in 7 (8.6 %; 95 % CI: 4.3 - 16.8) out…

Surgical application of a customised temporary palate guard to treat bleeding palatine ulcers in three cats.

CASE SERIES SUMMARY: Three adult cats were successfully treated for severe anaemia caused by a bleeding hard palate ulcer with a temporary palatal guard. Each cat required a blood transfusion and underwent surgical implantation of a customised temporary guard to protect the hard palate mucosa from ongoing irritation. The palatal guards were made from radiographic film in two cases and an acetate sheet in the third. Cats received varied concurrent treatments in conjunction with surgery, including amoxicillin/clavulanate or doxycycline, cyclosporine and prednisolone. Complete resolution of the h…

Effects of intranasal maropitant on clinical signs of naturally acquired upper respiratory disease in shelter cats.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that intranasally administered maropitant citrate would reduce the severity of clinical signs of feline upper respiratory disease (FURD) in shelter cats with naturally acquired disease. METHODS: Shelter cats with clinical signs of FURD were randomly assigned to receive either intranasal maropitant diluted in saline (maropitant citrate 10 mg/ml q12h, diluted 1:10 with sterile 0.9% saline) or intranasal 0.9% saline q12h for 7 days. Clinical disease severity was measured at entry into the study and again after completion of 7 days of t…

The first seroprevalence and molecular detection of toxoplasmosis infecting cats in Jordan with associated risk factors.

Toxoplasmosis is an infectious zoonotic disease transmitted by feline. It has been previously studied in human and other farm animals in Jordan but never in cates. A cross-sectional study was conducted between August 2022 and May 2023, in various regions of Jordan to assess Toxoplasma gondii infection in cats using both serologic and molecular techniques. A total of 368 blood and fecal samples were collected from pet, stray, feral, and shelter-residing cats. Serological testing via indirect ELISA for anti-Toxoplasma IgG antibodies showed an overall seroprevalence rate of 11.1 % (41/368; 95 % C…

Mycobacterium bovis infected domestic cats in an officially bovine tuberculosis free country resulting in human infection.

Although the Netherlands is an officially bovine tuberculosis (bTB) free (OTF) country, sporadic infections with Mycobacterium bovis still cause tuberculosis (TB) in (non-bovine) mammals, including humans. We describe for the first time cases of M. bovis infection in domestic cats in the Netherlands with transmission between companion animals and humans. In January 2023, a domestic cat, euthanized due to severe respiratory clinical signs, was diagnosed with M. bovis. Subsequently, three other cats from the household were euthanized and also diagnosed with M. bovis. The remaining kitten and dog…

High prevalence and risk factors of feline leukemia virus infection in Chilean urban cats (Felis catus).

Feline Leukemia Virus is a retrovirus causing fatal disease in domestic cats. While FeLV has been controlled in many countries, it remains a major concern in Latin American countries. This study conducted an epidemiological survey of FeLV in 182 Chilean domestic cats using PCR to detect provirus infection. The results were analysed using Multivariate Logistic Regression to examine risk factors associated with FeLV detection. The FeLV prevalence was 54.95 %, and statistically significant associations (p < 0.05) were found for two protective factors and one risk factor. Cats from Concepcion city…

An Aptamer-Based Proteomic Analysis of Plasma from Cats (Felis catus) with Clinical Feline Infectious Peritonitis.

Feline infectious peritonitis (FIP) is a systemic disease manifestation of feline coronavirus (FCoV) and is the most important cause of infectious disease-related deaths in domestic cats. FIP has a variable clinical manifestation but is most often characterized by widespread vasculitis with visceral involvement and/or neurological disease that is typically fatal in the absence of antiviral therapy. Using an aptamer-based proteomics assay, we analyzed the plasma protein profiles of cats who were naturally infected with FIP (n = 19) in comparison to the plasma protein profiles of cats who were c…
