Influence of Different Levels of a Rubber Seed Kernel Pellet Supplement on Feed Efficiency, Blood Chemistry, and Growth Performance in Beef Cattle.

The rubber seed kernel is a byproduct of rubber plantations and has potential as a source of protein and lipids. The aim of the current stud … mentation (p = 0.03). ADG was highest at 200 g/animal/day, suggesting a potential optimal level for cattle. The feed conversion ratio (FCR) decreased with the RUSKEP supplementation (p = 0.04). Supplementation with 200 g/animal/day of RUSKEP improves ADG and feed efficiency in tropical beef cattle.

Impact of mutations in PRLR for hair weight, circulating prolactin concentrations, feed intake, and growth of beef cattle in a hot and humid climate.

BACKGROUND: In cattle, mutations in the prolactin receptor gene (PRLR) causing loss of tyrosine residues important for JAK-STAT signaling result in a short hair coat and increased ability to regulate body temperature during heat stress. Such mutations, referred to as slick mutations, occur naturally and have been introduced into cattle by gene editing. AIM: Consequences of inheritance of various mutations in PRLR for growth in beef cattle raised in a hot, humid climate (Florida) were evaluated. METHODS: Beef cows (predominantly Angus) were inseminated with semen from a single Angus sire mosa…

First Evidence of Bovine Leukemia Virus in Culicoides Biting Midges and the Stable Fly Stomoxys calcitrans Collected on Cattle Farms in Poland.

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) is a cell-associated retrovirus of cattle transmitted mainly through the transfer of infected lymphocytes, but the possible role of hematophagous insects in its epidemiology remains incompletely understood. This study investigated BLV DNA in field-collected Culicoides biting midges and Stomoxys calcitrans from cattle farms in Poland. Insects were collected on four farms in northeastern Poland. Culicoides spp. were identified morphologically, classified by gonotrophic status, and pooled by species and status, whereas S. calcitrans were analyzed individually. DNA qual…

Impact of proviral integration of bovine leukemia virus near oncogenes on the early onset of lymphoma in cattle under 3 years of age.

Bovine leukemia virus (BLV) causes enzootic bovine leukosis (EBL), resulting in serious economic losses. Early-onset EBL in cattle under 3 years of age compromises the profit-generating potential of cattle, resulting in substantial economic losses. However, pathogenic mechanisms underlying early-onset EBL remain unclear. We identified 19 integration sites (ISs) from eight cattle with lymphoma under 3 years of age and compared them with 187 ISs from 79 cattle with lymphoma over 3 years of age. The distribution of ISs within repetitive regions, CpG islands, exons, introns, and intergenic regions…

Efficacy and hair deposition of pyrethroid- and organophosphate-based acaricides applied at different working pressures for the control of Rhipicephalus microplus in dairy cattle.

Rhipicephalus microplus significantly affects dairy cattle, with spray-applied acaricides commonly used for its control. However, increasing resistance and variations in application methods may compromise treatment efficacy. This study evaluated the efficacy of acaricide formulation containing pyrethroids and organophosphates, as well as its deposition in bovine hair when applied at different working pressures. Cattle were divided into three groups (n = 10 each): Group 1 received treatment at 50 psi using a backpack sprayer, Group 2 at 300 psi using a power sprayer, and Group 3 served as an un…

Daily Milk Losses Associated with Dairy Cow Bunching, Cattle's Protective Behavior Against Stable Flies (Stomoxys calcitrans) in California.

Cow bunching is a behavioral phenomenon where cattle aggregate in tight groups to protect themselves from biting by stable flies (Stomoxys calcitrans L.). The incidence of bunching varies between dairies and even among pens within the same dairy, as it is associated with the location-specific biting intensity of stable flies, which largely varies with dairy management and local environmental factors. Bunching may be associated with decreased feeding and laying times, as well as heat stress due to cattle aggregation. Thus, bunching may affect dairy cows' milk production by reducing dry matter i…
