Bone in emergency room: Not only a skeletal problem! A rare case of accidental chicken bone ingestion in the afferent loop following Billroth II partial gastrectomy.

We report the case of a 58-year-old male with prior Billroth II gastrectomy who presented with worsening abdominal pain. Contrast-enhanced CT revealed a hyperdense, corticated, triangular-shaped foreign body (FB), consistent with a chicken bone, which had undergone retrograde migration and become impacted in the afferent duodenal loop. The FB's orientation and location were precisely characterized, with associated inflammatory changes but no perforation. Push enteroscopy confirmed and successfully removed the FB. Post-procedural imaging excluded complications. This case highlights the diagnost

Arsenic induces chicken liver injury by inhibiting endoplasmic reticulum-lysosomal calcium ion transport and lysosomal autophagy activity via the IP3R/TRPML1 pathway.

Arsenic is a toxic substance widely present in the environment, and arsenic-containing pesticides and fertilizers are widely used in agricultural production. However, arsenic can enter the human body through the food chain, posing a serious threat to human health. The liver is an important metabolic and detoxification organ in living organisms and is particularly vulnerable to exogenous toxins. Transient receptor potential mucolipin 1 (TRPML1) and Inositol 1,4,5-trisphosphate receptor (IP3R), as calcium-transporting proteins on cellular organelles, play key roles in maintaining intracellular c

A recombinant human adenovirus type 5 vectored vaccine co-expression of VP1 and VP2 of chicken anemia virus elicits robust protective immune responses.

Chicken anemia virus (CAV) causes significant economic losses in the poultry industry worldwide. As current vaccines do not confer complete protection, the development of a highly effective and safe vaccine is of paramount importance. Control strategies relying on live attenuated vaccines carry a risk of reversion to virulence, while conventional inactivated or subunit vaccines preferentially induce a Th2-biased humoral immune response. There often fail to elicit the critical Th1-mediated cellular immunity required to clear infected cells. This immunological imbalance underscores the need for

Prevalence and antibiotic resistance patterns of Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii strains isolated from chicken droppings on poultry farms in Gondar city, Northwest Ethiopia.

BACKGROUND: Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Acinetobacter baumannii are common nosocomial pathogens in hospital settings. Recently, they have also been found in non-hospital environments, such as poultry farms. While most studies in Ethiopia have focused on these bacteria's antibiotic resistance patterns in hospitals, information regarding their prevalence and resistance in veterinary settings, particularly poultry farms, is limited. This study aimed to assess the prevalence and antibiotic resistance patterns of P. aeruginosa and A. baumannii isolated from chicken droppings on poultry farms. METHO

Ammonia Exposure-Induced Immunological Damage in Chicken Lymphoid Organs via TLR-7/MYD88/NF-κB Signaling Pathway and NLRP3 Inflammasome Activation.

Ammonia (NH3) is a hazardous gas that pollutes the environment and causes irritation. Its harmful effects on chickens, including its impact on their immune system, have previously been observed. However, the mechanism by which NH3 exposure causes immune system disorders in chickens remains unclear. The bursa of Fabricius (BF) and thymus are the two main lymphoid organs responsible for the proliferation, differentiation, and selection of B- and T-lymphocytes, both critical for the innate immune response of the host. In this study, we investigated the mechanism of NH3-induced immune dysregulatio…

Glycerol monolaurate improves intestinal morphology and antioxidant status by suppressing inflammatory responses and nuclear factor kappa-B signaling in lipopolysaccharide-exposed chicken embryos.

Medium-chain fatty acids and their derivatives are natural ingredients that support immunological functions in animals. The effects of glycerol monolaurate (GML) on intestinal innate immunity and associated molecular mechanisms were investigated using a chicken embryo model. Sixty-four Arbor Acres broiler embryos were randomly allocated into four groups. On embryonic day 17.5, the broiler embryos were administered with 9 mg of GML, which was followed by a 12-h incubation period and a 12-h challenge with 32 μg of lipopolysaccharide (LPS). On embryonic day 18.5, the jejunum and ileum were harves

Mycoplasma gallisepticum induced inflammation-mediated Th1/Th2 immune imbalance via JAK/STAT signaling pathway in chicken trachea: Involvement of respiratory microbiota.

The respiratory microbiota plays a significant role in the host defense against Mycoplasma gallisepticum (MG) infection. The results showed that MG infection changed respiratory microbiota composition, which lead to the tracheal inflammation injury and oxidative stress. MG infection significantly induced immunosuppression in chickens at day 3 and 5 post-infection. In addition, MG infection increased the expressions of pro-inflammatory cytokines in tracheal tissues and activated TLR4 mediated JAK/STAT signaling pathway at day 3 post-infection compared to the control group. Meanwhile, the expres…

High sequence similarity between avian pathogenic E. coli isolates from individual birds and within broiler chicken flocks during colibacillosis outbreaks.

Avian pathogenic E. coli (APEC) cause high first week mortality (FWM) in broiler chickens worldwide. In order to investigate the epidemiologic aspects of colibacillosis in broiler flocks it is important to develop reliable and cost-effective sampling guidelines. In this context, it is particularly important to define the minimum number of samples required to reliably identify the causative APEC clone during outbreaks of colibacillosis. This study describes the diversity of E. coli isolates between and within three flocks with high FWM due to colibacillosis. Each flock was represented by five a…

Comparative full genome sequence analysis of wild-type and chicken embryo origin vaccine-like infectious laryngotracheitis virus field isolates from Canada.

Infectious laryngotracheitis (ILT), caused by infectious laryngotracheitis virus (ILTV), occurs sporadically in poultry flocks in Canada. Live attenuated chicken embryo origin (CEO) vaccines are being used routinely to prevent and control ILTV infections. However, ILT outbreaks still occur since vaccine strains could revert to virulence in the field. In this study, 7 Canadian ILTV isolates linked to ILT outbreaks across different time in Eastern Canada (Ontario; ON and Quebec; QC) were whole genome sequenced. Phylogenetic analysis confirmed the close relationship between the ON isolates and th

Acute acalculous cholecystitis and cardiovascular disease, which came first? After two hundred years still the classic chicken and eggs debate: A review of literature.

The existence of a close association between disease of the biliary tract and disease of the heart is known from the mists of time. Acute acalculous cholecystitis (AAC) can be defined as an acute necro inflammatory disease of the gallbladder in the absence of cholelithiasis. AAC is a challenging diagnosis. The atypical clinical onset associated to a paucity and similarity of symptoms and to laboratory data mimicking cardiovascular disease (CVD) often results in under and misdiagnosed cases. Moreover, AAC has commonly a fulminant course compared to calculous cholecystitis and it is often associ

Protective effects of selenium yeast against cadmium-induced necroptosis through miR-26a-5p/PTEN/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway in chicken kidney.

Cadmium (Cd) is a ubiquitous environmental pollutant of increasing worldwide concern to both humans and animals. Selenium yeast (Se-Y) is an organic selenium source that has been shown an advantage in antagonizing Cd-induced liver necroptosis in chicken. Herein, we described the discovery path of Se-Y antagonism in Cd-induced renal necroptosis in chicken through targeting miR-26a-5p/PTEN/PI3K/AKT signaling pathway. We set up four groups of chickens at random: control group (0.5 mg/kg Na2SeO3), Se-Y group (0.5 mg/kg Se-Y), Se-Y+Cd group (0.5 mg/kg Se-Y and 150 mg/kg CdCl2) and Cd group (150 mg/…
