The Effects of Age, Information, and Personal Contact on Attitudes Toward Individuals With Cleft-Lip and Palate.

OBJECTIVE: The aim of the study was to examine how information and brief personal contact with individuals who have a cleft lip and/or palate (CLP) affected attitudes and to compare these effects across two age cohorts. DESIGN AND PARTICIPANTS: A pretest-posttest design was utilized to determine if accurate information and personal contact with an individual with CLP would affect cognitive, emotional, and behavioral attitudes in participants without CLP. To assess attitudes, 189 participants without cleft lip and palate completed a modified version of the Multidimensional Attitudes Scale towa

Subtypes in 22q11.2 deletion syndrome associated with behaviour and neurofacial morphology.

22q11.2 deletion syndrome (22q11DS) has a complex phenotype with more than 180 characteristics, including cardiac anomalies, cleft palate, intellectual disabilities, a typical facial morphology, and mental health problems. However, the variable phenotype makes it difficult to predict clinical outcome, such as the high prevalence of psychosis among adults with 22q11DS (~25-30% vs. ~1% in the general population). The purpose of this study was to investigate whether subtypes exist among people with 22q11DS, with a similar phenotype and an increased risk of developing mental health problems. Physi

A Novel Frameshift Variant and a Partial EHMT1 Microdeletion in Kleefstra Syndrome 1 Patients Resulting in Variable Phenotypic Severity and Literature Review.

BACKGROUND: Kleefstra syndrome 1(KLEFS1, OMIM#610253) is a rare neurodevelopmental disorder (NDD) instigated by heterozygous variants or microdeletions occurring in the 9q34.4 genomic region of the euchromatic histone methyltransferase-1 (EHMT1) gene and is inherited in an autosomal dominant (AD) manner. The clinical phenotype of KLEFS1 includes moderate to severe intellectual disability (ID), hypotonia, and distinctive facial features and additionally involves other organ systems (heart, renal, genitourinary, sensory) albeit with phenotypic heterogeneity between patients. The purpose of this

Birth Prevalence of Sickle Cell Disease and County-Level Social Vulnerability - Sickle Cell Data Collection Program, 11 States, 2016-2020.

Sickle cell disease (SCD) remains a public health priority in the United States because of its association with complex health needs, reduced life expectancy, lifelong disabilities, and high cost of care. A cross-sectional analysis was conducted to calculate the crude and race-specific birth prevalence for SCD using state newborn screening program records during 2016-2020 from 11 Sickle Cell Data Collection program states. The percentage distribution of birth mother residence within Social Vulnerability Index quartiles was derived. Among 3,305 newborns with confirmed SCD (including 57% with ho

Eculizumab in Typical Hemolytic Uremic Syndrome (HUS) With Neurological Involvement.

In typical hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) approximately 25% of patients show central nervous system (CNS) involvement often leading to serious long-term disabilities. We used the C5-complement inhibitor Eculizumab as rescue therapy. From 2011 to 2014, 11 children (median age 22 months, range 11-175) with enterohemorrhagic Escherichia coli-positive HUS requiring dialysis who had seizures (11/11) and/or were in a stupor or coma (10/11) were treated with Eculizumab. Two patients enrolled on the Safety and Efficacy Study of Eculizumab in Shiga-Toxin Producing E coli Hemolytic-Uremic Syndrome (STE

School performance in singletons born after assisted reproductive technology.

STUDY QUESTION: Is school performance in children conceived after assisted reproductive technology (ART) comparable to those conceived after spontaneous conception (SC)? SUMMARY ANSWER: Singleton children born after ART performed better in the crude analysis than singleton children born after SC although after adjustment, small differences were observed in total scores in favour of SC children. WHAT IS KNOWN ALREADY: While it is well known that ART children, also singletons, have an adverse perinatal outcome, studies on cognitive skills in ART children are inconsistent and only few studies h

Quality Standard for Rehabilitation of Young Deaf Children Receiving Cochlear Implants.

Background and objectives: More and more children with severe-to-profound hearing loss are receiving cochlear implants (CIs) at an early age to improve their hearing and listening abilities, speech recognition, speech intelligibility, and other aspects of spoken language development. Despite this, the rehabilitation outcomes can be very heterogeneous in this population, not only because of issues related to surgery and fitting or the specific characteristics of the child with his/her additional disabilities but also because of huge differences in the quality of the support and rehabilitation o

Confirmation of the Factor Structure and Measurement Invariance of the Children's Scale of Hostility and Aggression: Reactive/Proactive in Clinic-Referred Children With and Without Autism Spectrum Disorder.

OBJECTIVE: The measurement of aggression in its different forms (e.g., physical and verbal) and functions (e.g., impulsive and instrumental) is given little attention in subjects with developmental disabilities (DD). In this study, we confirm the factor structure of the Children's Scale for Hostility and Aggression: Reactive/Proactive (C-SHARP) and demonstrate measurement invariance (consistent performance across clinical groups) between clinic-referred groups with and without autism spectrum disorder (ASD). We also provide evidence of the construct validity of the C-SHARP. METHODS: Caregiver

Detection of antiviral drug resistance in patients with congenital cytomegalovirus infection using long-read sequencing: a retrospective observational study.

BACKGROUND: Congenital human cytomegalovirus (cCMV) infection can cause sensorineural hearing loss and neurodevelopmental disabilities in children. Ganciclovir and valganciclovir (GCV/VGCV) improve long-term audiologic and neurodevelopmental outcomes for patients with cCMV infection; however, antiviral drug resistance has been documented in some cases. Long-read sequencing can be used for the detection of drug resistance mutations. The objective of this study was to develop full-length analysis of UL97 and UL54, target genes with mutations that confer GCV/VGCV resistance using long-read sequen

Autoimmunity and pregnancy: autoantibodies and pregnancy in rheumatic diseases.

In women who suffer from rheumatic diseases (RDs) the risk of repeated fetal loss, intrauterine growth restriction, and preterm birth remains higher than in the general population. Antiphospholipid antibodies are frequently observed in patients with systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE). They are associated with recurrent pregnancy losses that may occur at any age of gestation. The cause of fetal death is believed to be intraplacental thrombosis, although other pathologic mechanisms have been described. A recent study has described the increased frequency of learning disabilities in the offspring

Writing in Elementary Students With Language-Based Learning Disabilities: A Pilot Study to Examine Feasibility and Promise.

PURPOSE: Although children with language-based learning disabilities (LLD) demonstrate significant difficulties with writing, empirical evidence to support interventions is sparse. Therefore, the purpose of this pilot study was to examine the feasibility and promise of a writing intervention for fourth- and fifth-grade students with LLD (WILLD: writing in students with LLD). The intervention components included word-, sentence-, and discourse-level writing processes and instructional practices using self-regulation strategies. METHOD: Participants for this study were 15 students with LLD, rec

Relationships between Eye Movements during Sentence Reading Comprehension, Word Spelling and Reading, and DTI and fmri Connectivity In Students with and without Dysgraphia or Dyslexia.

While eye movements were recorded and brains scanned, 29 children with and without specific learning disabilities (SLDs) decided if sentences they read (half with only correctly spelled words and half with homonym foils) were meaningful. Significant main effects were found for diagnostic groups (non-SLD control, dysgraphia control, and dyslexia) in total fixation (dwell) time, total number of fixations, and total regressions in during saccades; the dyslexia group had longer and more fixations and made more regressions in during saccades than either control group. The dyslexia group also differ

A characteristic cognitive and behavioral pattern as a clue to suspect Klinefelter syndrome in prepubertal age.

Klinefelter syndrome (KS) with the classic 47,XXY karyotype is the most frequent chromosomal aneuploidy, with a prevalence of 1 in 700 men; although the classic clinical picture is well-known and easily recognizable, most patients remain undiagnosed. The rate of diagnosis during childhood is extremely low, and only 10% of cases are identified before puberty, with a subsequent rate of ascertainment during lifetime of 25%. The low rate of timely diagnosis is because most of the classical signs and symptoms of androgen deficiency appear in mid- to late adolescence but it is important to recognize
