PURPOSE: To describe the outcomes of combining cyclophotocoagulation and tube-shunt glaucoma drainage implants, either sequentially or simultaneously, for the control of refractory glaucomas.
PATIENTS AND METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted of all patients that had been treated at our institute with both cyclophotocoagulation and a tube-shunt glaucoma drainage implant in the same eye between January 1996 and June 2000. Preoperative and postoperative intraocular pressure, number of glaucoma medications, vision, and complications data were collected for each eye.

PURPOSE: This study investigates the possibility that prostaglandins (PGs) induce changes in extracellular matrix (ECM) adjacent to ciliary muscle cells.
METHODS: Human ciliary smooth muscle cells were grown to confluence in monolayer cultures and were treated with PGF2alpha, 11-deoxy-PGE1, or PhXA85 (the nonesterified analogue of PhXA41) for 12 to 72 hours. The amount of collagens type I, III, and IV in the cultures was determined, using sandwich enzyme immunoassays. A Monte Carlo model is described for modeling photo propagation in a scattering medium. The authors evaluated, by means of colour Doppler imaging, the blood flow in ophthalmic artery and posterior ciliary arteries in subjects with chronic open angle glaucoma. We report on a case of idiopathic uveal effusion syndrome complicated by AION. To our knowledge such an association hasn't been previously described. We suggest that scleral thickening caused obstruction of vortex veins followed by uveal effusion and compression of posterior ciliary arteries within their intrascleral tract, leading to AION. Nevertheless is can't be excluded that AION was the result of mechanical compression on ciliary vessels of optic disc by choroidal detachment.

In view of the likelihood that the heparin-binding growth factors of fibroblast growth factors are neurotrophic for the neurones of the chick ciliary ganglion a study has been made of the retrograde axonal transport of the acidic and basic fibroblast growth factors by these neurones. Many recent data indicate that transport of Cl- across the ciliary epithelium plays an important role in aqueous humor formation. We used 36Cl to investigate the pathways for Cl- transport in confluent monolayers of cultured bovine pigmented ciliary epithelial cells. We have used antiserum raised against neurofilament (NF) protein and indirect immunofluorescence techniques to visualize neuronal structures in rodent, cat, and cow irides. In the adult rat iris a large population of nerve fibers with a nonautonomic distribution show NF-like immunoreactivity. The effect of facial nerve stimulation on ocular blood flow was studied in rabbits. The intracranial part of the facial nerve was stimulated electrically and the regional blood flow was measured with labelled microspheres. Previous work has suggested that cerebellum may control the size of the pupil and transmission in the pathway mediating the pupillary light reflex. In this work we found that electrical stimulation of the cerebellar nuclei (nucleus fastigius and nucleus interpositus bilaterally) evoked a discharge in the short ciliary nerves which innervate the intraocular muscles.
